KNOWLEDGE OF MORPHOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION METHODS AND OF THE HISTOLOGY LABORATORY; KNOWLEDGE OF STRUCTURE AND ULTRASTRUCTURE OF THE CELL (IN CONNECTION WITH BIOLOGY) AND OF THE FUNDAMENTAL TISSUES, OF DIFFERENTIATION, GROWTH AND THE STAGES THAT LEAD TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE HUMAN ORGANISM, INCLUDING THE MAIN MORPHOGENETIC FACTORS AND REGULATORY GENES. THE STUDENT MUST ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF INVESTIGATION METHODS IN CYTOLOGY, HISTOLOGY, HISTOCHEMISTRY, IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY, AND EMBRYOLOGY; HE MUST ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE THE CELL AND ITS OWN CONSTITUENTS AT THE MICROSCOPIC AND ULTRAMICROSCOPIC LEVEL, TOGETHER WITH FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBMICROSCOPIC STRUCTURE DOWN TO THE MACROMOLECULAR LEVEL. THE STUDENT MUST ALSO ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE UNDER THE OPTICAL MICROSCOPE AND DESCRIBE THE BASIC TISSUES AND THEIR VARIANTS; FINALLY, HE MUST DEMONSTRATE THAT HE KNOWS THE MECHANISMS OF CELL DIFFERENTIATION, CELL-CELL INTERACTIONS, HISTOGENESIS. IN EMBRYOLOGY HE WILL HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE TO HAVE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE OF ALL THE STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT FROM GAMETOGENESIS TO THE ORGANOGENESIS OF ALL THE SYSTEMS AND THE MAIN MORPHOGENETIC PROCESSES AND MECHANISMS. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
IT IS REQUIRED THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATION OF THE CELL. THE STUDENT MUST HAVE PASSED THE EXAM OF APPLIED BIOLOGY. |

AT EACH STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT, IT IS NECESSARY TO KNOW THE GENES, PROCESSES AND MOLECULES INVOLVED. |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO LESSONS (60 HOURS) AND EXERCISES ON IMAGES OF HISTOLOGICAL PREPARATIONS (24 HOURS). THE LECTURES WILL HAVE THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF THE STUDENTS, WHO WILL ALSO DEVELOP TOPICS OF SPECIAL INTEREST WHICH THEY WILL PRESENT TO THE CLASS THROUGH MINI-SEMINARS. THE COURSE ALSO PROVIDES TUTORING FOR STUDENTS WHO NEED MORE HELP. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM, EXPRESSED WITH A SCORE OUT OF THIRTY. THE EXAM INCLUDES A WRITTEN TEST WHICH PASSING WILL ALLOW ACCESS TO AN ORAL EXAMINATION WHICH WILL HAVE THE PURPOSE OF ASSESSING THE DEGREE OF KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT IN BOTH HISTOLOGY AND HUMAN EMBRYOLOGY. THE STUDENT WILL HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO RECOGNIZE AND DESCRIBE THE FUNDAMENTAL TISSUES STARTING FROM IMAGES AND THEIR VARIANTS AND TO HAVE UNDERSTOOD THE MECHANISMS OF CELL DIFFERENTIATION, CELL INTERACTIONS, HISTOGENESIS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH DISEASES. IN EMBRYOLOGY, HE MUST DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES AND THE MORPHOGENETIC MECHANISMS AND THEIR ALTERATIONS IN THE COURSE OF ONCOGENESIS AND OTHER DISEASES. THE EXAM IS AIMED AT ASSESSING THAT THE STUDENT KNOWS THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF THE DISCIPLINE. THE MARK, EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS WITH POSSIBLE HONORS, WILL DEPEND ON THE MATURITY ACQUIRED ON THE COURSE CONTENT. FOR THE PURPOSE OF AWARDING THE HONORS, THE QUALITY OF THE ORAL EXPOSURE WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT, IN TERMS OF THE USE OF APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE AND THE AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT DEMONSTRATED. |
