THE TEACHING AIMS TO PROMOTE THE KNOWLEDGE OF METHODS IN ETHNOGRAPHY AND CULTURE ANALYSIS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO ORAL AND PEASANT CULTURES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN WORLD, POSSIBLY IN VIEW OF AN INTERVENTION IN PROCESSES OF INTERCULTURAL INTEGRATION. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: TO KNOW THE CURRENT DEVELOPMENT OF METHODS AND CONCEPTS IN ETHNOANTHROPOLOGICAL RESEARCH. THE COURSE IS DESIGNED AS AN INTRODUCTION TO MAIN TOPICS OF CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY: THE ANTHROPOLOGICAL CONCEPT OF CULTURE AND THE GENERAL FEATURES OF DEA DISCIPLINES; NOTIONS OF RACE, ETHNIC GROUP, ETHNICITY; DIFFERENT KINDS OF RACISM, RECENT ONES INCLUDED, LIKE “DIFFERENTIALIST RACISM”; ETHNOCENTRISM AND THE NOTION OF “CRITICAL ETHNOCENTRISM” (E. DE MARTINO); CULTURAL RELATIVISM AND HUMAN RIGHTS; FIELDWORK AND ITS TRANSFORMATIONS THROUGH HISTORY; CULTURES AND TERRITORIES; LANGUAGE AND CULTURE; ORALITY, LITERACY AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES; MAIN SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT IN ANTHROPOLOGY: CULTURAL EVOLUTIONISM, THE FRENCH SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY, BRITISH STRUCTURAL FUNCTIONALISM, HISTORICAL PARTICULARISM AND THE “CULTURE AND PERSONALITY” SCHOOL IN THE UNITED STATES, LEVISTRAUSSIAN STRUCTURALISM, INTERPRETIVE ANTHROPOLOGY, CULTURAL STUDIES, POSTMODERN AND POSTCOLONIAL TRENDS; KINSHIP IN ANTHROPOLOGICAL THEORIES: KINSHIP PATTERNS AND TERMINOLOGIES, GENDER, GENERATIONS, FAMILY STRUCTURES; ECONOMIC ANTHROPOLOGY, CONCEPTS OF GIFT AND RECIPROCITY; FOLKLORE, POPULAR CULTURE, CULTURAL HERITAGE; MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY AND CULTURE-BOUND SYNDROMES; ANTHROPOLOGY OF SPACE AND PLACE AND URBAN ANTHROPOLOGY; ANTHROPOLOGY AND THE MODERN WORLD, PATTERNS OF CONSUMPTION AND STRATEGIES OF DISTINCTION; GLOBAL WORLD, DIASPORA, TRANSNATIONALISM. FOLLOWING THE APPROACH OF THE HANDBOOK WRITTEN BY F. DEI, THE COURSE WILL BE STRUCTURED IN TWO PARTS. FIRST PART: MAIN CONCEPTUAL AND HISTORICAL FEATURES, WHICH ALSO MARKED THE INSTITUTIONALIZATION OF ANTHROPOLOGY AS AN ACADEMIC DISCIPLINE. PART TWO: CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS IN ANTHROPOLOGY, ITS MOST DYNAMIC FIELDS OF RESEARCH, ITS APPLICABILITY TO CONTEMPORARY CONTEXTS AND ISSUES. APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR OF LESSON EACH WILL BE DEVOTED TO THE SIX ANTHROPOLOGICAL TEXTS TO CHOOSE FROM, EACH ONE REPRESENTATIVE OF RELEVANT TOPICS OF THE COURSE: THE MONOGRAPH ABOUT A NON-OCCIDENTAL SOCIETY (M. GRIAULE); RESEARCH ON ITALIAN TRADITIONAL PEASANT CULTURES (E. DE MARTINO); ANTHROPOLOGICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL STUDY OF MARGINALIZED GROUPS IN URBAN SOCIETY (N. ANDERSON); TRANSFORMATIONS OF ANTHROPOLOGICAL CONCEPTS AND METHODOLOGIES IN A GLOBAL WORLD (U. HANNERZ); ANTHROPOLOGY IN CONTEMPORARY URBAN STUDIES (F. SCARPELLI); ANTHROPOLOGY OF MIGRATION IN NON-OCCIDENTAL CONTEXTS (A. MASSA). |

LECTURES WITH THE AID OF IMAGES AND SLIDES, VIDEO DOCUMENTARIES AND WORKSHOPS WITH EXPERTS IN THE DISCIPLINE. THE COURSE ALSO INTENDS TO PROMOTE THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS, GIVING THEM OPPORTUNITIES TO CONTRIBUTE TO CLASSROOM DIALOGUE AND PROPOSING THEM MENTAL AND PRACTICAL EXPERIMENTS IN APPLYING QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS TO EVERYDAY LIFE CONTEXTS. |

THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS IN AN ORAL INTERVIEW ON THE COURSE CONTENT. THE ORAL INTERVIEW WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT: KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF THE CONTENT OF THE HANDBOOK AND THE CHOSEN MONOGRAPH, ABILITY TO USE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, TO CROSS-REFERENCE VARIOUS TOPICS, TO EXPRESS PERSONAL VIEWS ON THEM. FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS, ACTIVE PARTICIPATION DURING THE COURSE WILL BE FAVOURABLY EVALUATED. |
