FOLLOWING THE APPROACH OF THE COURSE TEXTBOOK (F. DEI), THE COURSE WILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS OF EQUAL DURATION. THE FIRST WILL BE DEVOTED TO ILLUSTRATING THE HISTORICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FEATURES OF THE DISCIPLINARY TRADITION THAT HAVE GUIDED THE INSTITUTIONALISATION OF ANTHROPOLOGY WITHIN THE ACADEMY. THE SECOND WILL FOCUS MAINLY ON CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS IN THE DISCIPLINE, ON SOME OF ITS MOST DYNAMIC AREAS OF RESEARCH, AND MORE GENERALLY ON ITS APPLICABILITY TO CONTEXTS AND PROBLEMS IN TODAY'S WORLD. THERE WILL ALSO BE PRESENTATIONS OF THE SIX MONOGRAPHS FROM WHICH STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE. EACH PRESENTATION WILL TAKE APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR OF CLASS TIME AND WILL BE MADE TO CORRESPOND WITH THE COURSE TOPICS THAT ARE CLOSEST TO IT. THREE OF THESE MONOGRAPHS ARE 'CLASSIC' STUDIES, WELL-KNOWN EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH ON: NON-EUROPEAN TRADITIONAL SOCIETIES (M. GRIAULE); THE MAGICAL-RELIGIOUS CONCEPTIONS OF THE ITALIAN PEASANT WORLD (E. DE MARTINO); AND, AT THE BORDER BETWEEN SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY, MARGINAL GROUPS IN MODERN URBAN SOCIETY (N. ANDERSON). THE OTHER THREE, WHICH ARE QUITE RECENT, INSTEAD SHOW HOW THE TOOLS OF ANTHROPOLOGY CAN BE APPLIED TO CONTEMPORARY THEMES: THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF MIGRATIONS IN THE GLOBALISED WORLD (A. MASSA); ANTHROPOLOGY IN CONTEMPORARY URBAN STUDIES (F. SCARPELLI); AND YOUTH AND SPORT SUBCULTURES IN SURFER AUSTRALIA (D. NARDINI). |

AT THE SAME TIME, THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED, FAVOURING A DIALOGIC TEACHING METHOD AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE AND PROPOSING SMALL EXPERIMENTS, BOTH MENTAL AND PRACTICAL, FOR APPLYING QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS TO CONTEXTS CLOSE TO OUR DAILY LIVES. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
LEARNING WILL BE ASSESSED BY MEANS OF AN ORAL EXAMINATION FOCUSING ON THE TEXTS IN THE SYLLABUS (THE TEXTBOOK AND YOUR CHOSEN MONOGRAPH). THE FOLLOWING WILL BE ASSESSED: THE TEXTS HAVING BEEN READ (AND UNDERSTOOD) IN THEIR ENTIRETY; THE ABILITY TO EXPOUND ON THEM WITH ACCURACY AND DEMONSTRATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT; THE CAPACITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE VARIOUS TOPICS WITHIN THE COURSE; AND THE ABILITY TO INTERPRET THEM IN A PERSONAL WAY.
