Objectives

THE COURSE AIMS TO PROMOTE KNOWLEDGE OF ETHNOGRAPHIC METHODS AND CULTURAL ANALYSIS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE ORAL AND AGRARIAN CULTURES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN WORLD, ALSO WITH A VIEW TO INTERVENING IN PROCESSES OF INTERCULTURAL INTEGRATION.

THE COURSE IS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE KEY THEMES OF DEMO-ANTHROPOLOGICAL REFLECTION: THE ANTHROPOLOGICAL CONCEPT OF CULTURE AND THE GENERAL OUTLINES OF THE DEMO-ETHNO-ANTHROPOLOGICAL DISCIPLINES; OVERCOMING THE CONCEPT OF RACE AND FOCUSING ON DIFFERENT FORMS OF RACISM, SUCH AS SO-CALLED 'DIFFERENTIAL' RACISM; THE CONCEPTS OF ETHNIC GROUP AND ETHNICITY AND THEIR POLITICAL USES; ETHNOCENTRISM AND DE MARTINO'S 'CRITICAL ETHNOCENTRISM'; CULTURAL RELATIVISM AND THE QUESTION OF UNIVERSAL HUMAN RIGHTS; FIELDWORK AND THE PROBLEM OF THE LINK BETWEEN CULTURES AND TERRITORIES; THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE; ORALITY, WRITING AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES; THEORETICAL SCHOOLS IN THE HISTORY OF THE DISCIPLINE, INCLUDING EVOLUTIONISM, THE FRENCH SCHOOL OF SOCIOLOGY AND ANGLO-SAXON STRUCTURAL-FUNCTIONALISM, US CULTURALISM, STRUCTURALISM, INTERPRETIVE ANTHROPOLOGY, CULTURAL STUDIES, THE POSTMODERN AND POSTCOLONIAL SCHOOLS; KINSHIP IN ANTHROPOLOGICAL STUDIES, ITS SYSTEMS AND TERMINOLOGIES, GENDER, GENERATIONS, FAMILY FORMS; ECONOMIC ANTHROPOLOGY AND THE CONCEPTS OF GIFT AND RECIPROCITY; FOLKLORE, POPULAR CULTURE, CULTURAL HERITAGE; POPULAR CULTURE AND MASS CULTURE; MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY AND CULTURALLY CONDITIONED SYNDROMES; THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF HUMAN SETTLEMENTS, THE CONCEPTS OF SPACE AND PLACE, URBAN ANTHROPOLOGY; MASS CULTURE, CONSUMPTION PATTERNS AND STRATEGIES OF DISTINCTION; AND THE GLOBAL WORLD, DIASPORA AND TRANSNATIONALISM.

FOLLOWING THE APPROACH OF THE COURSE TEXTBOOK (F. DEI), THE COURSE WILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS OF EQUAL DURATION. THE FIRST WILL BE DEVOTED TO ILLUSTRATING THE HISTORICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FEATURES OF THE DISCIPLINARY TRADITION THAT HAVE GUIDED THE INSTITUTIONALISATION OF ANTHROPOLOGY WITHIN THE ACADEMY. THE SECOND WILL FOCUS MAINLY ON CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTS IN THE DISCIPLINE, ON SOME OF ITS MOST DYNAMIC AREAS OF RESEARCH, AND MORE GENERALLY ON ITS APPLICABILITY TO CONTEXTS AND PROBLEMS IN THE CONTEMPORARY WORLD.
THE SIX MONOGRAPHS FROM WHICH STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE WILL ALSO BE PRESENTED. EACH PRESENTATION WILL TAKE APPROXIMATELY ONE HOUR OF CLASS TIME. THESE ARE RECENT MONOGRAPHS THAT ILLUSTRATE SOME APPLICATIONS OF ANTHROPOLOGICAL TOOLS TO CONTEMPORARY ISSUES: THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF MIGRATION IN THE GLOBALISED WORLD (A. MASSA); HERITAGE AND CULTURAL REVIVAL (G. NERICI); ANTHROPOLOGY AND MODERN URBAN GHETTOS (M. MARASCO); YOUTH AND SPORTS SUBCULTURES (D. NARDINI); MEMORY AND POLITICAL VIOLENCE (L. D'ORSI); THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITIES: CONCEPTS OF DEPENDENCY AND CARE (L. URBANO).
Teaching Methods

THE BASIC TEACHING MODE OF THE COURSE WILL BE A FRONTAL LECTURE WITH THE SUPPORT OF IMAGES AND SLIDES, ALONGSIDE THE USE OF VIDEOS AND THE INTERVENTION OF EXTERNAL EXPERTS. AT THE SAME TIME, THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF THE STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED, FAVOURING AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE A DIALOGICAL TEACHING METHOD AND PROPOSING SMALL EXPERIMENTS, BOTH MENTAL AND PRACTICAL, IN THE APPLICATION OF QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS TO CONTEXTS CLOSE TO OUR DAILY LIVES.
Verification of learning

LEARNING WILL BE ASSESSED BY AN ORAL EXAMINATION BASED ON THE TEXTS IN THE SYLLABUS (THE TEXTBOOK AND YOUR CHOSEN MONOGRAPH). THE FOLLOWING WILL BE ASSESSED: THAT THE TEXTS HAVE BEEN READ (AND UNDERSTOOD) IN THEIR ENTIRETY; THE ABILITY TO EXPLAIN THEM ACCURATELY AND DEMONSTRATE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT; THE ABILITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE VARIOUS TOPICS OF THE COURSE; AND THE ABILITY TO INTERPRET THEM IN A PERSONAL WAY. FOR THOSE WHO ATTEND LECTURES IN PERSON, THEIR ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE LECTURES WILL ALSO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.
