Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH AN OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN FORMS OF DEVIANCE AND CRIME, AS WELL AS THE VARIOUS SANCTIONING SYSTEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THEM. IN PARTICULAR, THE COURSE WILL COVER SUICIDE, THE SALE AND CONSUMPTION OF SUBSTANCES, PROSTITUTION, PROPERTY CRIMES, VIOLENT CRIMES, AND ECONOMIC CRIME.
A KEY OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS ALSO TO INTRODUCE THE MAIN THEORIES EXPLAINING DEVIANCE AND CRIME, AS WELL AS TO PROVIDE AN IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF SANCTIONING SYSTEMS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
BY THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL:
•HAVE ACQUIRED A SOLID UNDERSTANDING OF THEORIES ON DEVIANCE AND CRIME, AS WELL AS SYSTEMS OF CONTROL AND SANCTIONING;
•BE ABLE TO DEVELOP THEIR OWN CRITICAL PERSPECTIVE;
•BE CAPABLE OF ANALYZING DEVIANT AND CRIMINAL PHENOMENA AND EVALUATING CONTROL AND SANCTIONING SYSTEMS, WITH A SPECIFIC FOCUS ON THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF SOCIOLOGICAL CONCEPTS AND THEORIES.

THIS COURSE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE STUDY OF DEVIANCE, CRIME, AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. SPECIFICALLY, THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE COVERED:
•DEFINITION OF DEVIANCE
•NORMS AND SOCIAL CONTROL
•STIGMA AND LABELING
•SUICIDE
•SALE AND CONSUMPTION OF SUBSTANCES
•PROSTITUTION
•PROPERTY CRIMES
•VIOLENT CRIMES
•ECONOMIC CRIME
THE COURSE WILL ALSO EXAMINE THEORETICAL MODELS AND EXPLANATIONS OF DEVIANCE AND CRIME, MECHANISMS OF SOCIAL CONTROL, THE FUNCTIONING OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, AND THE PRISON SYSTEM.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES AND LABORATORY SESSIONS, INCLUDING GROUP WORK, STUDENT PRESENTATIONS, AND COLLECTIVE DISCUSSIONS.
Verification of learning
FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS, ASSESSMENT CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN EXAM WITH OPEN-ENDED AND MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS. THE EVALUATION CRITERIA WILL CONSIDER:
•KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED IN CLASS;
•ABILITY TO USE PRECISE AND ACADEMICALLY APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE;
•ABILITY TO CRITICALLY ELABORATE ON THE CONCEPTS LEARNED;
•ARGUMENTATIVE SKILLS;
•CLARITY OF EXPRESSION.
STUDENTS WHO WISH TO IMPROVE THEIR WRITTEN EXAM SCORE MAY TAKE AN ADDITIONAL ORAL EXAM, ACCORDING TO MODALITIES AGREED UPON WITH THE INSTRUCTOR.
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED THROUGH AN ORAL EXAM. THOSE WHO ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND THE COURSE ARE ENCOURAGED TO CONTACT THE INSTRUCTOR WELL IN ADVANCE OF THEIR EXAM DATE TO DISCUSS THE EXAMINATION FORMAT AND CONTENT.
