Objectives
THE COURSE INTRODUCES THE STUDENTS TO THE STRUCTURE OF MATTER IN TERMS OF THE ELECTRONIC
STRUCTURE OF ATOMS AND MOLECULES. A LARGE FOCUS WILL BE ON THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE MACROSCOPIC PROPERTIES OF MATTER. THE THERMODYNAMIC AND KINETIC PRINCIPLES REGULATING THE CHEMICAL PROCESSES WILL BE ILLUSTRATED AND DISCUSSED. THE COURSE PROVIDE A CULTURAL BACKGROUND FOR THE SUCCEEDING COURSE OF CHEMISTRY AND IT GIVES THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND THE MAIN CHEMICAL PHENOMENA. MOREOVER, IT WILL GIVE INFORMATION ABOUT THE QUANTITATIVE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SUBSTANCES UNDERGOING CHEMICAL REACTION AND WILL INTRODUCE THE STUDENT TO THE PRACTICE OF THE CHEMICAL LABORATORY.

KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY LEARNED IN THE HIGH SCHOOL.

Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS IN AN ORAL EXAMINATION, WHICH MUST BE PRECEDED BY A POSITIVE MARK FOR THE WRITTEN EXAM OF STOCHIOMETRY.
STUDENTS ATTENDING THE COURSE HAVE THE CHANCE OF TAKING THREE WRITTEN TESTS, WHOSE POSITIVE RESULTS, CAN BE WORTH THE EXEMPTION OF THE FINAL WRITTEN TEST.
