THE COURSE AIMS TO - PROVIDE BASIC ELEMENTS FOR THE KNOWLEDGE AND STUDY OF EUROPEAN CIVILIZATION IN THE MIDDLE AGES, THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN MOMENTS OF THE HISTORY OF POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS, SOCIETY AND ECONOMY IN EUROPE BETWEEN THE 5TH AND 15TH CENTURIES; AS WELL AS THE MAIN SOURCES THAT TESTIFY TO MOMENTS AND DEVELOPMENTS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (DESCRIPTOR 1 DUBLIN) THE STUDENT - LEARNS THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT HISTORY CONVENTIONALLY DEFINED AS MEDIEVAL, BUT ALSO ABOUT SOME OF ITS LATE-ANTIQUE ASSUMPTIONS, IN ORDER TO GRASP SOME OF ITS STRUCTURAL AND 'LONG-LASTING' ELEMENTS; - WILL LEARN, SPECIFICALLY, THE MAIN HISTORICAL EVENTS OF THE MEDIEVAL WEST AND, TO SOME EXTENT, OF THE EAST; - HE/SHE WILL HAVE AN INITIAL UNDERSTANDING OF THE COMPLEXITY OF INDIVIDUAL HISTORICAL PROCESSES AND PHENOMENA AND THEIR INTERCONNECTIONS, AS WELL AS OF THE MOST NOVEL AND CHARACTERISTIC ELEMENTS OF THE SO-CALLED "MIDDLE AGE", IN THE VARIOUS SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL ARTICULATIONS OF ITS DEVELOPMENT; - LEARN THE MAIN INTERCONNECTIONS BETWEEN HISTORICAL EVENTS AND THE LITERARY, LINGUISTIC, HISTORICAL, PHILOSOPHICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL CULTURE OF THE MEDIEVAL AGE. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING (DESCRIPTOR 2 DUBLIN) THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - CONTEXTUALISE AND ANALYSE HISTORICAL PHENOMENA AND THE SOURCES THAT BEAR WITNESS TO THEM; - ELABORATE THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BOTH IN ORDER TO DEAL WITH SPECIFIC MEDIEVAL THEMES AND TO MOVE WITHIN OTHER HISTORICAL MOMENTS WITH THE ACQUIRED METHODOLOGIES AND TOOLS; - TO APPROACH THE STUDY OF OTHER MEDIEVAL DISCIPLINES ON THE BASIS OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED ABOUT MEDIEVAL HISTORICAL EVENTS, WHICH CONSTITUTE A CONDITIO SINE QUA NON TO UNDERSTAND AND CONTEXTUALISE THE PHENOMENA (HISTORICAL-ARTISTIC, PHILOSOPHICAL, ARCHAEOLOGICAL, BIBLIOGRAPHICAL.....) THAT HE/SHE WILL FACE DURING HIS/HER TRAINING. AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT (DESCRIPTOR 3 DUBLIN) THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - USE THE KNOWLEDGE AND METHODOLOGY ACQUIRED TO INTERPRET THE VARIOUS FORMS OF DEVELOPMENT OF MEDIEVAL HISTORICAL PHENOMENA IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS OF FUTURE EDUCATION, WORK AND RESEARCH; - UNDERSTAND THE TIMES, PLACES AND MODES OF PRODUCTION OF MEDIEVAL EVIDENCE. COMMUNICATION SKILLS (DESCRIPTOR 4 DUBLIN) THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - COMMUNICATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN OTHER DISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS AND IN THE WORLD OF WORK; - COMMUNICATE, BY MEANS OF TRADITIONAL AND COMPUTERISED TOOLS, THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ALSO BEING ABLE TO COUNT ON THE POSSESSION, ALTHOUGH RELATED TO A FIRST LEVEL TRAINING, OF THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGE OF THE DISCIPLINE. LEARNING ABILITY (DESCRIPTOR 5 DUBLIN) THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO - USE TRADITIONAL AND BASIC BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS FOR THE KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL HISTORICAL EVENTS (REPERTORIES, BIBLIOGRAPHIES, EDITIONS OF SOURCES), ALSO IN FUNCTION OF FUTURE TRAINING; - USE INFORMATION RETRIEVAL RESOURCES (SCIENTIFICALLY RECOGNISED DATABASES AND ONLINE RESOURCES); - TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN HISTORICAL KNOWLEDGE AND THE DISSEMINATION, AT VARIOUS LEVELS, OF THE SAME KNOWLEDGE ("MEDIEVALISM" AND SIMILAR); - TO HAVE THE TOOLS TO UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS THROUGH THE USE OF THE RELEVANT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE. |

THE EXAMINATION, HELD IN ORAL FORM, SHOULD TEST THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL MOMENTS OF MEDIEVAL HISTORY, THE SOURCES AND THE MAIN HISTORIOGRAPHICAL PROBLEMS INHERENT IN THE DISCIPLINE. THE ABILITY TO EXPRESS ONESELF CLEARLY, USING CORRECT AND APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, SYNTACTICALLY AND WITH REGARD TO THE SPECIFIC VOCABULARY OF THE SUBJECT, AND TO ORGANISE AN ARTICULATE AND PERTINENT DISCOURSE ON THE TOPICS PROPOSED, SELECTING THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ASPECTS AND CONTEXTUALISING THEM WITHIN THE RIGHT FRAMEWORK OF HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL REFERENCES WILL ALSO BE ASSESSED. FINALLY, THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE STUDENTS WRITTEN INTER-COURSE TESTS TO TEST THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE VARIOUS STAGES OF GENERAL HISTORY WILL BE CONSIDERED. |
