THE COURSE AIMS TO:
TO OFFER IN-DEPTH AND SPECIALISED KNOWLEDGE ON THE INSTITUTIONS OF THE MEDIEVAL AGE, AS REGARDS BOTH THEIR HISTORICAL EVENTS AND THE SOURCES THAT TESTIFY TO THEM.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STARTING FROM THE METHODOLOGICAL AND PHILOLOGICAL PREMISES INDISPENSABLE FOR THE STUDY OF MEDIEVAL INSTITUTIONS, WITH PARTICULAR REGARD TO SOUTHERN ITALY, THE STUDENT WILL
- KNOW THE HISTORY OF FACTS AND AT THE SAME TIME THE HISTORY OF IDEAS, WITH THE AIM OF IDENTIFYING AND UNDERSTANDING THE STRUCTURAL AND CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF THE THESE INSTITUTIONS;
- ACQUIRE THE INTERPRETATIVE TOOLS NECESSARY TO GRASP INSTITUTIONAL PHENOMENA IN THEIR SPECIFICITY BUT ALSO IN THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER SOCIAL COMPONENTS.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- SELECT AND READ (DESIRABLY IN MEDIEVAL LATIN) THE MAIN SOURCES RELATING TO THE HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL AGE INSTITUTIONS AND PROCESS THEIR INFORMATION, GRASPING THE ELEMENTS THAT OUTLINE THEIR FUNCTIONS AND ROLE IN THE MORE GENERAL HISTORICAL CONTEXT, ITALIAN AND EUROPEAN;
- TO MOVE EASILY IN THE HISTORICAL DYNAMICS THAT LED TO THE PRESERVATION OF MEDIEVAL DOCUMENTATION AND TO REFLECT ON THE MEANING OF "HISTORICAL MEMORY" IN THE DIFFERENT CONTEXTS THAT WILL BE CONSIDERED, INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- USE THE KNOWLEDGE AND METHODOLOGY ACQUIRED TO INTERPRET THE VARIOUS FORMS OF DEVELOPMENT OF INSTITUTIONAL STRUCTURES IN DIFFERENT STUDY, WORK AND RESEARCH CONTEXTS;
- UNDERSTAND THE TIMES, PLACES AND MODES OF PRODUCTION OF MEDIEVAL DOCUMENTATION.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- COMMUNICATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN OTHER DISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS AND IN THE WORLD OF WORK;
- COMMUNICATE, BY MEANS OF TRADITIONAL AND COMPUTER TOOLS, THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED, ALSO RELYING ON THE ACQUISITION OF THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGE OF THE DISCIPLINE.

LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS (REPERTORIES, BIBLIOGRAPHIES, EDITIONS OF SOURCES);
- USE COMPUTERISED INFORMATION RETRIEVAL RESOURCES (DATABASES);
- BEGIN TO CARRY OUT AUTONOMOUS RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, STARTING WITH THE COMPREHENSION AND INTERPRETATION OF HISTORIOGRAPHICAL TEXTS RELATING TO THE HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE AGES AND THEN MOVING ON TO THE SELECTION AND ANALYSIS OF SOURCES;
- TO HAVE THE TOOLS TO UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS THROUGH THE USE OF THE RELEVANT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE AGES
Contents
1) THE KINGDOM OF SICILY BETWEEN THE 12TH AND 15TH CENTURIES (24 HOURS)
2) THE NORMAN KINGDOMS (5 HOURS)
3) CROWN AND CITIES IN THE KINGDOM OF SICILY (5 HOURS)
Teaching Methods
LECTURES INTERSPERSED WITH READINGS AND INTERPRETATIONS OF MEDIEVAL SOURCES BY THE LECTURER AND THE STUDENTS, BOTH IN THE LECTURE ROOM AND USING THE LIBRARY COLLECTIONS IN THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES. WRITTEN EXERCISES WILL ALSO BE CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO TEST THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED REGARDING THE HISTORICAL PROCESSES UNDER EXAMINATION AND THE MAIN HISTORIOGRAPHY OF REFERENCE. THEMATIC SEMINARS HELD BY EXPERTS IN THE FIELD MAY BE PROPOSED DURING THE COURSE, ALSO AIMED AT PROVIDING CONCRETE EXAMPLES OF TEACHING METHODOLOGY.
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION, WHICH WILL BE ORAL BUT WILL ALSO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE RESULTS OF THE WRITTEN EXERCISES, WILL HAVE TO VERIFY THE GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL MOMENTS OF THE HISTORY OF INSTITUTIONS IN THE MEDIEVAL AGE AND THE PROCESSES THAT LED TO THEIR EVOLUTION, WITH REFERENCES TO HISTORIOGRAPHY AND TO THE SOURCES. THE ABILITY TO EXPRESS ONESELF CLEARLY, USING CORRECT AND APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, SYNTACTICALLY AND WITH REGARD TO THE SPECIFIC VOCABULARY OF THE SUBJECT, AND TO ORGANISE AN ARTICULATE AND PERTINENT DISCOURSE ON THE TOPICS PROPOSED, SELECTING THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ASPECTS AND CONTEXTUALISING THEM WITHIN THE RIGHT FRAMEWORK OF HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL REFERENCES, WILL ALSO BE ASSESSED.
