Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO
- OFFER A THOROUGH AND SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE OF THE DISCIPLINE, AS REGARDS BOTH THE HISTORICAL EVENTS AND SOME SIGNIFICANT SOURCES THAT BEAR WITNESS TO THEM.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT
- WILL KNOW THE HISTORY OF FACTS AND AT THE SAME TIME THE HISTORY OF IDEAS, IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY AND UNDERSTAND THE STRUCTURAL AND CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD;
- WILL ACQUIRE THE METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS NECESSARY TO CONTEXTUALISE AND INTERPRET HISTORICAL PHENOMENA;
- WILL KNOW THE MAIN SOURCES USEFUL FOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE MEDIEVAL AGE;
- KNOW THE MAIN HISTORIOGRAPHIC TRENDS OF THE PAST AND PRESENT;
- THEY WILL KNOW THE INTERCONNECTIONS BETWEEN HISTORICAL EVENTS AND THE LITERARY, LINGUISTIC, HISTORICAL, PHILOSOPHICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL CULTURE OF THE MEDIEVAL AGE;
- LEARN THE BASIC METHODOLOGY FOR TEACHING HISTORY.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- SELECT AND READ (HOPEFULLY IN MEDIEVAL LATIN) THE MAIN SOURCES RELATING TO MEDIEVAL HISTORY AND TO PROCESS AND CONTEXTUALISE THE INFORMATION, MASTERING THE MAIN SPECIALIST RESEARCH TOOLS, IN PRINT AND DIGITAL;
- TO MOVE EASILY IN THE HISTORICAL DYNAMICS THAT LED TO THE PRESERVATION OF MEDIEVAL DOCUMENTATION AND TO REFLECT ON THE MEANING OF "HISTORICAL MEMORY" IN THE DIFFERENT CONTEXTS IT WILL CONSIDER, INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD;
- TO USE COMPUTERISED AND INNOVATIVE TOOLS USEFUL FOR TEACHING MEDIEVAL HISTORY.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- USE THE KNOWLEDGE AND METHODOLOGY ACQUIRED IN THE FIELD OF MEDIEVAL HISTORY TO MOVE AUTONOMOUSLY IN DIFFERENT AND FUTURE CONTEXTS OF STUDY, WORK AND RESEARCH;
- UNDERSTAND THE TIMES, PLACES AND METHODS OF PRODUCTION OF MEDIEVAL DOCUMENTATION;
- TO SELECT AUTONOMOUSLY, FOR TEACHING PURPOSES, TOOLS, METHODS AND CONTENTS OF MEDIEVAL HISTORY.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO
- COMMUNICATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN OTHER DISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS AND IN THE WORLD OF WORK;
- COMMUNICATE, ABOVE ALL FOR DIDACTIC PURPOSES, BY MEANS OF TRADITIONAL AND COMPUTERISED TOOLS, THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED, RELYING ALSO ON THE ACQUISITION OF THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGE OF THE DISCIPLINE.

LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS (REPERTORIES, BIBLIOGRAPHIES, EDITIONS OF SOURCES);
- USE COMPUTERISED INFORMATION RETRIEVAL RESOURCES (DATABASES);
- BEGIN TO CARRY OUT AUTONOMOUS RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, STARTING FROM THE COMPREHENSION AND INTERPRETATION OF HISTORIOGRAPHIC TEXTS CONCERNING THE HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE AGES, AND THEN MOVING ON TO THE SELECTION AND ANALYSIS OF SOURCES;
- TO HAVE THE TOOLS TO UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS THROUGH THE USE OF THE RELEVANT SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE AGES.

1) MEDIEVAL MONASTICISM FROM THE ORIGINS TO THE 15TH CENTURY (20 HOURS)
2) THE MONASTERY OF MONTECASSINO FROM ITS ORIGINS TO THE 12TH CENTURY: HISTORICAL, POLITICAL, PATRIMONIAL AND CULTURAL EVENTS (25 HOURS)
Teaching Methods
LECTURES, WITH THE AID OF DIRECT READINGS OF THE SOURCES IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE AND/OR TRANSLATED, FOR WHICH THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF THE STUDENTS IS REQUIRED. WRITTEN EXERCISES WILL ALSO BE CARRIED OUT IN ORDER TO TEST THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED REGARDING THE HISTORICAL PROCESSES UNDER EXAMINATION AND THE MAIN HISTORIOGRAPHY OF REFERENCE. THEMATIC SEMINARS HELD BY EXPERTS IN THE SECTOR MAY BE PROPOSED DURING THE COURSE, ALSO AIMED AT PROVIDING CONCRETE EXAMPLES OF TEACHING METHODOLOGY.
Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION, WHICH WILL BE ORAL BUT WILL ALSO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE RESULTS OF THE WRITTEN EXERCISES, WILL TEST THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT MATTER OF THE COURSE FROM A VARIETY OF PERSPECTIVES: ECCLESIASTICAL-RELIGIOUS, POLITICAL, SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL, WITH REFERENCES TO HISTORIOGRAPHY AND SOURCES. THE ABILITY TO EXPRESS ONESELF CLEARLY, USING CORRECT AND APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, SYNTACTICALLY AND WITH REGARD TO THE SPECIFIC VOCABULARY OF THE SUBJECT, AND TO ORGANISE AN ARTICULATE AND PERTINENT DISCOURSE ON THE TOPICS PROPOSED, SELECTING THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ASPECTS AND CONTEXTUALISING THEM WITHIN THE RIGHT FRAMEWORK OF HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL REFERENCES, WILL ALSO BE ASSESSED.
