EXPECTED LEARNING AND PROFICIENCY RESULTS
THE COURSE IS ORIENTED TO TEACHING THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF CONTINUUM MECHANICS AND STRUCTURAL MECHANICS, WITH A FOCUS ON THE STATICS AND KINEMATICS, THE ELASTIC ANALYSIS, THE DESIGN AND THE STRENGTH ANALYSIS OF BARS, BEAMS AND FRAMES.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE MAIN EDUCATIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING GOALS OF THE CLASS ARE CONCERNED WITH THE BASIC ASPECTS OF CONTINUUM MECHANICS (STRESS AND STRAIN; CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS); THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE STRUCTURAL MECHANICS (STATIC, KINEMATIC AND ELASTIC PROBLEMS); ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF BEAMS FOR AXIAL FORCE, SHEAR, BENDING AND TORSION; BASIC ELEMENTS OF ELASTIC STABILITY.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
WITH REFERENCE TO THE APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS, THE CLASS WILL CONFER ABILITIES RELATIVE TO DESCRIPTION OF THE STRESS AND STRAIN FIELDS OF CONTINUOUS BODIES AND THE COMPETENT CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS; THE DESIGN AND MODELING OF BASIC STRUCTURAL SCHEMES; THE ASSESSMENT OF THE STABILITY AND STRENGTH CAPACITY OF PLANAR AND SPATIAL STRUCTURAL SCHEMES.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS
THE STUDENT WILL HAVE KNOWLEDGE AND CONTROL OF THE THEORETICAL AND APPLICATIVE CONCEPTS COVERED BY THE COURSE WHEN SOLVING PROBLEMS SIMILAR TO THOSE STUDIED IN CLASS HOURS.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE VOCABULARY PERTAINING TO THE DISCIPLINE.
LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO THE SOLUTION OF STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE STUDIED IN CLASS HOURS, FOR WHAT CONCERNS THE NATURE OF THE STRUCTURE AND THE COMPONENT MATERIALS.
Prerequisites
PREREQUISITES: THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EDUCATIONAL GOALS OF THE CLASS REQUIRE THAT THE STUDENT HAS PRELIMINARILY STUDIED ALGEBRA AND PHYSICS.
PROPEDEUTICS: TO HAVE PASSED THE EXAMS OF MATHEMATICS II, APPLIED MATHEMATICS, AND PHYSICS.
Contents
CENTROIDS AND MOMENTS OF INERTIA: CENTROIDS AND CENTER OF MASS, MOMENTS OF INERTIA, MOHR CIRCLE, EXAMPLES.
CONTINUUM MECHANICS: BASIC CONCEPTS OF CONTINUUM MECHANICS; STRESS AND STRAIN TENSORS; CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS; FAILURE CRITERIA, NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL EXAMPLES.
KINEMATICS AND STATICS OF STRUCTURES: FREE-BODY DIAGRAMS; FUNICULAR POLYGONS AND FORM-FINDING PROBLEMS; AXIAL-FORCE, SHEAR AND BENDING-MOMENT DIAGRAMS, EXAMPLES.
THEORY OF ELASTIC BARS AND BEAMS: TIMOSHENKO AND EULERO-BERNOULLI BEAM THEORIES; PRINCIPLE OF VIRTUAL WORK; FORCE AND DISPLACEMENT METHODS FOR ELASTIC STRUCTURES, APPLICATIVE EXAMPLES.
STRENGTH ANALYSIS: DESIGN OF BEAMS AND COLUMNS FOR AXIAL-FORCE, SHEAR AND BENDING, INCLUDING STRENGTH AND STABILITY ANALYSIS, CASE STUDIES, NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL EXAMPLES.
Teaching Methods
THE CLASS INCLUDES THEORETICAL LECTURES (50%) AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES, INCLUDING LABORATORY HOURS AT THE LABORATORY OF STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING (50%).
THE CFU DEDICATED TO THE THEORETICAL LESSONS ARE 6, AS WELL AS THE ONES DEDICATED TO EXERCISE LESSONS.
A 70% FREQUENCY IN CLASS IS REQUIRED TO PASS THE FINAL EXAM (AS FROM DIDACTIC REGULATIONS). THE INSTRUCTOR CAN VERIFY THE REACHING OF THE MINIMUM REQUIRED PERCENTAGE OF CLASS FREQUENCY, THROUGH ELECTRONIC SURVEYING TOOLS.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAM CONSIST OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL INTERVIEW. THE WRITTEN TEST CAN BE REPLACED BY THREE MIDTERM WRITTEN TESTS, WHILE THE ORAL INTERVIEW CAN BE REPLACED BY A SECOND WRITTEN TEST DEALING WITH THE THEORETICAL TOPICS COVERED BY THE COURSE. THE OPERATIVE CONDITIONS OF THE FINAL TESTS WILL BE COMMUNICATED BEFORE THE EXAM SESSIONS TAKE PLACE. THE WRITTEN TEST HAS DURATION OF 3 OR 4 HOURS, DEPENDING ON THE ASSIGNED APPLICATIVE EXCERCISES, POSSIBLY SUBDIVIDED INTO THREE SEPARATE MIDTERM TESTS. THE EXERCISES GIVEN DURING SUCH WRITTEN TESTS WILL BE PREFERABLY FOCUSED ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS (NOT MANDATORY): STATICS AND KINEMATICS OF MOMENT RESISTING FRAMES; TRUSS STRUCTURES: DESIGN AND STRENGTH ANALYSIS; CONTINUOUS BEAMS: ELASTIC AND STRENGTH ANALYSIS. THE ORAL EXAMINATION CONSISTS IN AN INTERVIEW WHICH FIRST DEALS WITH THE DISCUSSION OF THE EXERCISES GIVEN IN THE WRITTEN TEST AND NEXT ON THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE COURSE. DURING THE INTERVIEW, THE STUDENT SHOULD DEMONSTRATE TO HAVE KNOWLEDGE AND CONTROL OF THE KEY ELEMENTS OF THE MECHANICS OF SOLIDS AND STRUCTURES. THE ORAL EXAMINATION CAN BE REPLACED BY A WRTTEN TEST WITH OPEN ANSWER QUESTIONS ON THE THEORETICAL TOPICS OF THE COURSE, EVENTUALLY INCLUDING ALSO THE SOLUTION OF REVIEW APPLICATIVE EXERCISES.
THE MINIMUM GRADE (18) IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS UNCERTAINTIES IN THE APPLICATION OF THE CONCEPTS AND TOOLS COVERED BY THE COURSE, AND HAS A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONCEPTS OF THE COURSE TOPICS.
THE MAXIMUM GRADE (30) IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS A FULL KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONCEPTS AND APPLICATIVE TOOLS COVERED BY THE COURSE, AND IS ABLE TO SOLVE THE ASSIGNED PROBLEMS THROUGH EFFECTIVE AND ACCURATE PROCEDURES.
TO ACHIEVE THE "LAUDE" GRADE, THE STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE/EXHIBIT:
-A SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE AT THE ORAL INTERVIEW, MAINLY IN TERMS OF THE RICHNESS AND ACCURACY OF THE VOCABULARY;
-THE CAPACITY TO CORRELATE THE DIFFERENT TOPICS COVERED BY THE COURSE, AND THEIR LINKS WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES;
-A DEMONSTRATED INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT.
