Objectives
AIMS:
KNOWLEDGE OF SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENT, ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENA AND THE DYNAMICS OF SURFACE AND DEEP FLOW, THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SOIL AND VEGETATION, THE EFFECTS OF HUMAN ACTIVITIES ON SOIL AND WATER RESOURCES, THE IMPACT ON ECOSYSTEMS. THE STUDENT ACQUIRES THE SKILLS TO OPERATE IN THE FIELD OF PROJECT AND MANAGEMENT OF INNOVATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE SYSTEMS FOR SOIL CONSERVATION, TO PREVENT DESERTIFICATION AND DEGRADATION OF THE TERRITORY, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE MEDITERRANEAN MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT.

THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED WILL BE:
DYNAMICS OF FLUIDS, THE TRANSPORT OF WATER IN MOUNTAIN CREEKS AND THE CONTROL OF SEDIMENT TRANSPORT, BOTH ON BARE OR FORESTED SLOPES AND IN NATURAL RIVERBEDS.

THE MAIN SKILLS WILL BE:
APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
WITHIN THE COURSE THE KNOWLEDGE IS PROVIDED TO UNDERSTAND AND APPLY THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF HYDRAULICS TO THE HYDRAULIC-FOREST ARRANGEMENTS. AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL HAVE ACQUIRED THE NECESSARY SKILLS FOR A RATIONAL CHOICE OF THE APPROPRIATE HYDRAULIC-CONSERVATIVE INTERVENTIONS OF THE TERRITORY, AS WELL AS THE NECESSARY TOOLS FOR A CORRECT PLANNING OF THE INTENSIVE WORKS OF HYDRAULIC-FOREST ARRANGEMENT.


AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
THE STUDENT MUST BE ABLE TO KNOW INDEPENDENTLY HOW TO EVALUATE THE MOST SUITABLE PROCEDURES FOR SOLVING THE FOREST-SCALE PROBLEMS AT THE BASIN SCALE.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT MUST BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED, ORGANIZING THEM LOGICALLY, USING AN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE AND USING THE MATHEMATICAL AND COMPUTER TOOLS PROVIDED DURING THE COURSE.

LEARNING ABILITY
THE STUDENT MUST BE ABLE TO GATHER AND ORGANIZE IN A FUNCTIONAL WAY THE INFORMATION RECEIVED DURING THE COURSE IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO INTERVENE THROUGH APPROPRIATE TOOLS IN THE PROTECTION OF THE MOUNTAIN TERRITORY.
Prerequisites
IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND AND KNOW HOW TO APPLY MOST OF THE TOPICS DEALT WITH IN TEACHING, IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO HAVE PASSED THE HYDRAULICS EXAM.

BASICS OF HYDROLOGY, HYDROGRAPHY, MORPHOMETRY: 1 ECTS
THE HYDROLOGICAL CYCLE, PLUVIOMETRY, MORPHOLOGY AND MORPHOMETRY ELEMENTS: WATER CATCHMENT AREA, SURFACE, AVERAGE HEIGHT, AVERAGE SLOPE, SHAPE FACTOR, DENSITY OF THE DRAINAGE NETWORK.

BASICS OF HYDROLOGICAL ESTIMATION OF FLOOD FLOWS: 1 ECTS
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF SHORT-DURATION RAINS BY MEANS OF THE GUMBEL DISTRIBUTION LAW AND INTENSITY-DURATION CURVE, FLOOD FLOWS STATISTICAL ESTIMATION, THE TIME OF CORRIVATION OF A RIVER BASIN, THE RATIONAL METHOD.

SOLID TRANSPORT AND EROSIVE PROCESSES: 1 ECTS
THE SOLID TRANSPORT, THE CONDITIONS OF INCIPIENT MOTION, THE EROSIVE PROCESSES, THE HYDROMETRIC EROSION, THE MASS MOVEMENTS, THE ANTHROPIC ACTIONS.

BASIN RECLAMATION WORKS: 1 ECTS
CLASSIFICATION AND DESCRIPTION OF HYDRAULIC-FORESTRY WORKS, ARRANGEMENT OF THE SLOPES, SUPERFICIAL WORKS, COATING INTERVENTIONS, STABILIZING INTERVENTIONS, COMBINED INTERVENTIONS..

STABILITY OF MOUNTAIN RIVERBEDS: 1 ECTS
CLASSIFICATION OF STREAMS, TRANSPORT TORRENT, EXCAVATION TORRENT, GRADED ACCOMMODATION, BOTTOM THRESHOLD ACCOMMODATION. SIZING AND CONSTRUCTION OF A BRIDLE: WEIR, THICKNESS OF THE CROWNING, BODY OF THE GRAVITY BRIDLE. STABILITY CONDITIONS: OVERTURNING, SLIPPAGE, CRUSHING.

EXERCISE: THE DESIGN OF CORRECTION WORK FOR A NATURAL RIVERBED . 1 ECTS
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 42 HOURS OF TEACHING BETWEEN LECTURES AND EXERCISES (6 CFU): 35 CLASSROOM HOURS (5 ECTS) AND 7 HOURS OF GUIDED EXERCISES (1 ECTS) ARE PLANNED.

THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED AS FOLLOWS:
CLASSROOM LECTURES ON ALL COURSE TOPICS;

LABORATORY ACTIVITIES:
TOPICS. THE DESIGN OF CORRECTION WORK FOR A NATURAL RIVERBED
PROCEDURE. STUDENTS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS (4-5 STUDENTS PER GROUP) AND 7 GUIDED TUTORIALS OF 1 HR EACH WILL FOLLOW. AT THE END OF THE GUIDED EXERCISES THE STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO CARRY OUT INDIVIDUAL ELABORATIONS, WHICH WILL BE VERIFIED INDIVIDUALLY DURING THE ORAL EXAMINATION
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE LEARNING OUTCOMES IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN ORAL EXAM WITH EVALUATION IN THIRTIETHS. THE EXAM INCLUDES THE PRESENTATION OF A TECHNICAL PAPER PRODUCED BY THE STUDENT INDEPENDENTLY OR IN GROUPS ON A TOPIC INDICATED BY THE TEACHER.
THE ORAL EXAM CONSISTS OF A DISCUSSION LASTING ABOUT 15 MINUTES AIMED AT ASCERTAINING THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACHIEVED BY THE STUDENT ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS INDICATED IN THE SYLLABUS. THE ORAL TEST WILL ALSO ALLOW THE STUDENT'S COMMUNICATION SKILLS TO BE VERIFIED WITH THE LANGUAGE AND AUTONOMOUS ORGANIZATION OF THE EXPOSITION.
THE ORAL EXAM INCLUDES A DISCUSSION OF THE DURATION OF ABOUT 15 MINUTES OF A TECHNICAL WORK PRODUCED BY THE STUDENT INDEPENDENTLY OR IN A GROUP ON A CASE STUDY PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER AS A LABORATORY ACTIVITY. THE DISCUSSION WILL ILLUSTRATE THE PROBLEMS POSED BY THE ASSIGNED CASE, THE POSSIBLE PROJECT ALTERNATIVES, THE POSSIBLE REGULATORY CONTEXT, THE METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH ADOPTED, THE ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED. THE DISCUSSION CAN USE SLIDES AND PROVIDE FOR THE REQUEST FOR THEORETICAL INSIGHTS AND DETAILED CLARIFICATIONS BY THE MEMBERS OF THE EXAMINATION COMMITTEE.
THE EVALUATION OF THE ORAL TEST WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON THE BASIS OF THE FOLLOWING INDICATORS: COMPLETENESS, PRESENTATION, RELEVANCE.
THE TEST AS A WHOLE MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO ASCERTAIN BOTH THE CAPACITY FOR KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING, AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE SKILLS ACQUIRED, BOTH THE ABILITY TO EXHIBIT, AND THE ABILITY TO LEARN AND DEVELOP SOLUTIONS IN INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT.
THE MINIMUM GRADE FOR PASSING THE EXAM IS 18/30. THE HONORS CAN BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO REACH THE MAXIMUM SCORE OF 30/30 AND DEMONSTRATE TO BE ABLE TO INDEPENDENTLY APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED EVEN IN CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PROPOSED IN CLASS.
