Objectives
I. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: ABILITY TO APPROACH THE ORIGINAL TEXT OF PHILOSOPHICAL CLASSICS TEXTS IN MEDIEVAL TIME, TO ANALYSE AND CRITICALLY AND CONTEXTUALLY APPRECIATE VOCABULARY AND LINGUISTIC SKILLS

II. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: DETERMINING THROUGH THE READING OF TEXTES THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF PHILOSOPHICAL MEDIEVAL LITERATURE.

TITLE: THE "REFLECTION JUDGEMENT" AND THE "NATURE'S TECHNIQUE": KANT'S "CRITIQUE OF JUDGEMENT" ON TELEOLOGY, SOME REFLECTIONS ON LEIBNIZ AND KANT

CONTENTS: THE "CRITIQUE OF JUDGEMENT" IS USUALLY ANALYSED AS THE FOUNDATION OF A PHILOSOPHICAL ESTHETICS. THE LECTURES WILL FOCUS MAINLY THE OTHER SIDE OF THE "CRITIQUE OF JUDGEMENT", NAMELY THE PROBLEM OF THE TELEOLOGICAL JUDGEMENT, WHOSE PARTICULAR STRUCTURE WILL BE ANALYSED FOCUSING THE RELATION WITH THE LEIBNIZ'S NOTIONS OF HARMONY, PERFECTION AND FINALITY AND THEIR DEVELOPMENT IN LEIBNIZ'S SCHOOL (WOLFF, BAUMGARTEN), KANT'S DISCUSSION OF SPINOZA AND LEIBNIZ AS ALTERNATIVES, HIS DOCTRINE OF LIVING ORGANISMS.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES INCLUDE BOTH GENERAL LESSONS ON THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY SINCE LEIBNIZ TO KANT (WITH PARTICULAR LESSONS ON SPINOZA, LEIBNIZ, THE ENLIGHTENMENT DEBATE ON TELEOLOGY, THE ENLIGHTENMENT NATURAL THEOLOGY, HUME, KANT), BOTH INTERPRETATIVE LECTURES DEDICATED TO SOME CENTRAL TOPICS OF KANT'S TEXT: THE TWO INTRODUCTION AND THE PART ON THE "DIALECTICS" OF TELEOLOGICAL JUDGEMENT
Verification of learning
THE ORAL PROOF WILL CONCERN PARAGRAPHS ALREADY ANALYSED DURING THE LECTURES. THE STUDENT WILL BE INVITED TO COMMENT GIVING AN ANALYSIS OF THEIR COMMENT AND A CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THEIR FUNCTIONS IN THE ECONOMY OF KANT'S BOOK.
THE FINAL PROOF WILL INCLUDE ALSO A DISCUSSION ON ONE OF THE OTHER BOOKS WHICH ARE INCLUDED IN THE SECTION "TEXTS". BUT STUDENTS MAY ANTICIPATE THIS PART OF THE FINAL PROOF AND GIVE A REPORT ON ONE OF THE COMMENTARY TEXTS IN THE COURSE OF THE LECTURES

(1) IMMANUEL KANT, CRITIQUE OF JUDGEMENT, AN INTEGRAL EDITION OF THE BOOK: THE SO CALLED "FIRST" INTRODUCTION, SECOND PART: §§ 60 - 78.
(2) EMILIO GARRONI, ESTETICA ED EPISTEMOLOGIA. RIFLESSIONI SULLA "CRITICA DEL GIUDIZIO" (1976). ALTERNATIVE CLASSICAL TEXTS ON THE TOPIC (CASSIRER, SCARAVELLI, PAREYSON, HANNAH ARENDT) CAN BE PREFERRED, BUT COMMUNICATING IT TO THE TEACHER.
(3) STUDENTS, ESPECIALLY IF THEY DON'T FOLLOW CONSTANTLY THE LECTURES, WILL NEED EVEN TO REFRESH THEIR KNOWLEDGE ON THE WESTERN PHILOSOPHY SINCE LEIBNIZ TO KANT THROUGH A GOOD HANDBOOK OF HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY.
