MAKING JUDGMENTS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: - ACQUIRE SKILLS IN SELECTING POTENTIAL SYNTHETIC PROCEDURES IN THE EFFICIENT PRODUCTION OF ORGANIC MOLECULES - EVALUATE THE CHEMICAL REACTIVITY OF ORGANIC MOLECULES IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL AREA - RESEARCH AND ANALYSE SCIENTIFIC DATA IN ORDER TO PROPOSE EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS COMMUNICATION SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -DESCRIBE AND DEPICT ORGANIC MOLECULE THROUGH APPLICATION OF GRAPHICAL CRITERIA -GIVE WRITTEN AND ORAL COMMUNICATION OF THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE USING A CORRECT SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE ABILITY TO LEARN STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: -UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY -UNDERSTAND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY BIBLIOGRAPHY |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE, IT IS NECESSARY TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY. TO ACCESS THE FINAL EXAMINATION, IT IS NECESSARY TO PASS THE “GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY” EXAM. |

PART A COMPRISES TEACHING LESSONS AND EXCERCISES (10 CFU) IN THE CLASSROOM. PART B IS ABOUT THE BASIC TECNIQUES FOR THE PURIFICATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. PART A (92 H): STRUCTURE AND BONDING IN ORGANIC MOLECULES (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS). ACIDS AND BASES (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS). STEREOCHEMISTRY (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS). SYSTEMATIC NOMENCLATURE RULES (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 3 HOURS), STRUCTURES, CHEMICAL-PHYSICS PROPERTIES AND REACTIVITY OF THE MOST COMMON CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS: ALKANES (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS) AND CYCLOALKANES (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 3 HOURS), CONFORMATIONAL ANALISYS (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS) ALKENES (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS), ALKYNES (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS), ALKYL HALIDES (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS), SOSTITUTION REACTIONS (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 3 HOURS), ELIMINATION REACTIONS (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS). AROMATIC COMPOUNDS (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS), ALCOHOLS AND TIOLS (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS), ETHERS, EPOXYDES (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 2 HOURS). INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC SYNTHESIS (LECTURES: 3.5 HOURS, EXERCISES: 3 HOURS). PART B (16 H): BASIC TECHNIQUES OF PURIFICATION SUCH AS CRISTALLIZATION, SUBLIMATION, ORGANIC SOLVENT EXTRACTION, DISTILLATION, SILICA-GEL CHROMATOGRAPHY, ION-CHROMATOGRAPHY, GEL-PERMEATION CHROMATOGRAPHY, GAS-CHROMATOGRAPHY, HPLC. PRACTISING ON THE CONTENT OF PART B TAKES PLACE DURING THE EXCERCISES. |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
PARTS A AND B COMPRISE TEACHING LESSONS (72 HOURS) AND EXCERCISES (36 HOURS) IN THE CLASSROOM (FOR AVERALL 108 HOURS). STUDENTS ARE NOT OBLIGED TO FOLLOW THE COURSE, HOWEVER THEIR PRESENCE DURING THE LECTURES IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE AIM OF THE FINAL EXAM IS TO CHECK THAT THE LEARNING OUTCOMES HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED. DURING THE COURSE THERE WILL BE PARTIAL ASSESSMENTS TESTS IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE KNOWLEDGE LEVEL GAINED BY THE STUDENTS. THERE WILL BE TWO WRITTEN TESTS DURING THE COURSE (120 MINUTES MAXIMUM TIME). THE WRITTEN TESTS WILL DEAL ABOUT NOMENCLATURE, REACTIVITY, AND SYNTHESIS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (MAXIMUM MARK: 23/30), PLUS PURIFICATION TECHNIQUES (MAXIMUM MARK: 7/30). THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE THE AVERAGE OF THE MARKS GAINED IN THE TWO WRITTEN TESTS. GENERAL MARK EQUAL OR HIGHER THAN 18/30 (A MARK IN THE PURIFICATION TECHNIQUES EQUAL OR HIGHER THAN 3/30 AND NO LESS THAN 15/30 ON PART A). FOR THE STUDENTS WHO DIDN'T PASS THE PARTIAL TESTS, A FINAL WRITTEN EXAM IS REQUIRED. TO PASS THE EXAM A MINIMUM LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE IS REQUESTED ABOUT THE MOST IMPORTANT TOPICS STUDIED DURING THE CLASSES. THE WRITTEN TESTS WILL DEAL ABOUT NOMENCLATURE, REACTIVITY, AND SYNTHESIS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (MAXIMUM MARK: 23/30), PLUS PURIFICATION TECHNIQUES (MAXIMUM MARK: 7/30). GENERAL MARK EQUAL OR HIGHER THAN 18/30 (A MARK IN THE PURIFICATION TECHNIQUES EQUAL OR HIGHER THAN 3/30 AND NO LESS THAN 15/30 ON PART A). THE EXCELLENCE IS GAINED WHEN THE STUDENTS KNOW THE STUDIED SUBJECTS IN A DEEP AND CRITICAL WAY. |
