THE TEACHING TREATS THE FUNDAMENTALS OF CIRCUITS THEORY AND APPLICATIONS. THE TEACHING METHOD ALLOWS TO ACQUIRE THE BASIC CONCEPTS FOR THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF LINEAR CIRCUITS. KNOWLEDGE ABOUT DESIGN AND OPERATIONAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE ELECTRICAL RESIDENTIAL POWER SYSTEMS OPERATING AT LOW VOLTAGE WILL BE ALSO ACQUIRED.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING CAPACITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROPERTIES OF THE MAIN LINEAR ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS, THEIR ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS, CALCULATION OF THE ELECTRICAL POWER AND ENERGY, METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON THE OPERATION OF LOW VOLTAGE POWER SYSTEMS FOR THE ELECTRICAL ENERGY DISTRIBUTION AND RELATED PROTECTION DEVICES.

APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING CAPACITIES:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
• SOLVE SIMPLE ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS OPERATING IN THE STATIONARY OR SINUSOIDAL REGIME BY USING SERIES-PARALLEL SIMPLIFICATIONS AND EQUATIONS FOR THE VOLTAGE AND CURRENT REPARTITION.
• INSTANTANEOUS, ACTIVE AND REACTIVE POWER CALCULATION ON A ELECTRICAL BIPOLE.
• FORMULATING THE CIRCUIT EQUATIONS BY USING KIRCHHOFF LAWS, EFFECTS SUPERPOSITION METHOD, EQUIVALENT GENERATORS, EVENTUALLY COMBINED WITH THE PHASOR METHOD.
• DESIGN A LOW VOLTAGE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS FOR RESIDENTIAL APPLICATIONS.
• SELECT THE PROPER PROTECTION DEVICES FOR LOW VOLTAGE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS .

JUDGMENT AUTONOMY:
THE STUDENT MUST BE ABLE TO USE THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS LEARNED DURING THE LESSONS FOR ANALYSING AN ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT AND SELECT THE MAIN DEVICES USED IN A LOW VOLTAGE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT MUST BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN THE CONCEPTS LEARNED DURING THE LESSONS BY USING AN APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE AND SCHEMES.

LEARNING SKILLS:
THE STUDENT KNOWS HOW TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND IS ABLE TO LEARN INDEPENDENTLY NEW TOPICS CORRELATED TO THE SUBJECT STUDIED DURING THE COURSE.

Prerequisites

THE TOPICS OF THE TWO MODULES ARE THE FOLLOWING ONE:

MODULE "CIRCUIT THEORY" (LECTURES: 15 HRS, CLASSROOM EXERCISES: 15 HRS)
ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS OPERATING IN DC. BIPOLES. KIRCHHOFF LAWS. METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF LINEAR CIRCUIT. TELLEGEN, THEVENIN AND NORTON THEOREMS. LINEAR CIRCUITS OPERATING IN SINUSOIDAL STEADY-STATE CONDITIONS. PHASORS. IMPEDANCE AND ADMITTANCE. SINUSOIDAL STEADY-STATE POWER. ACTIVE AND REACTIVE POWER CONSERVATION. POWER FACTOR CORRECTION. PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF THE IDEAL TRANSFORMER.

MODULE "ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS" (LECTURES: 15 HRS, CLASSROOM PRACTICE: 15 HRS)
COMPONENTS FOR POWER DISTRIBUTION AND TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS: POWER CABLES. PROTECTION SYSTEMS: CIRCUIT BREAKERS, DIFFERENTIAL RELAYS, FUSES, DISCONNECTING SWITCHES. SWITCHBOARDS. DIRECT AND INDIRECT CONTACTS. CURRENT IN HUMAN BODY. GROUND SYSTEMS. STANDARD AND LEGISLATIVE ASPECTS. LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEMS. DESIGN AND VERIFICATION OF RESIDENTIAL ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS.
Teaching Methods
FOR THE MODULE “CIRCUIT THEORY” THE TEACHING INCLUDES CLASSROOM LESSONS AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES. DURING CLASSROOM EXERCISES, APPLICATION EXAMPLES OF THE THEORY AND METHODS TREATED IN THE CLASSROOM LESSONS ARE DISCUSSED AND THEN THE STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO SOLVE ASSIGNED EXERCISES. RESULTS ARE COLLEGIALLY AND CRITICALLY DISCUSSED AMONG THE STUDENTS AND THE TEACHER.
THIS MODULE IS EQUIVALENT TO 3CFU EQUALLY DISTRIBUTED AMONG THEORY AND EXERCISES ACTIVITY

FOR THE MODULE “POWER SYSTEM” THE TEACHING INCLUDES CLASSROOM LESSONS AND LABORATORY PRACTICES.
DURING THE LABORATORY PRACTICE THE STUDENTS ARE ORGANIZED INTO WORKING GROUPS, IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A SHORT THESIS ON A TOPIC TREATED IN THE COURSE.
THIS MODULE IS EQUIVALENT TO 3CFU EQUALLY DISTRIBUTED AMONG THEORY AND LABORATORY ACTIVITY

IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE TO THE FINAL ASSESSMENT AND TO GAIN THE CREDITS CORRESPONDING TO THE COURSE, THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ATTENDED AT LEAST 70% OF THE HOURS OF ASSISTED TEACHING ACTIVITIES.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAM IS COMPOSED BY A WRITTEN PART AND AN ORAL PART. THE EXAMS ARE SCHEDULED AT THE END OF THE TEACHING ACTIVITIES.

THE WRITTEN EXAM CONSISTS IN SOLVING AN ELECTRICAL CIRCUIT OPERATING IN STATIONARY OR SINUSOIDAL REGIME. SOME QUESTION WITH OPEN ANSWER CAN BE ALSO INCLUDED IN THE WRITTEN EXAM RELATED TO THE SUBJECTS TREATED IN THE MODULE “CIRCUIT THEORY”. THE DURATION OF THE WRITTEN EXAM WILL BE NO LONGER THAN 2 HOURS. THE WRITTEN EXAM IS EVALUATED IN THIRTIETHS, TO ACCESS TO THE ORAL EXAM IS REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE AT LEAST 18/30.

AT THE END OF THE TEACHING MODULE “CIRCUIT THEORY”, IT COULD BE SCHEDULED A WRITTEN TEST “PROVA IN ITINERE” (EVALUATED IN THIRTIETHS). IT WILL BE CONSIDERED AS A WRITTEN EXAM IF THE STUDENT ACHIEVES AT LEAST 18/30.

IN THE ORAL EXAM THE STUDENT WILL DISCUS THE SUBJECTS RELATED TO MODULE “POWER SYSTEM”. DURING THE ORAL EXAMINATION IS ALSO DISCUSSED THE SHORT THESIS ASSIGNED IN THE LABORATORY PRACTICE. THE EVALUATION FOR THE ORAL EXAM IS IN THIRTIETHS

THE FINAL EVALUATION WILL BE OBTAINED AS AVERAGE OF THE WRITTEN EXAM EVALUATION AND THE ORAL EXAM EVALUATION.

THE PRAISE IS ASSIGNED WHEN THE CANDIDATE EXHIBITS HIGH CAPABILITY TO EXPOSE WITH A CRITICAL APPROACH THE TOPICS STUDIED IN THE COURSE.
