Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO ENABLE THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY SKILLS FOR: MONITORING AND DIAGNOSTICS, AS WELL AS THE UPGRADING AND SAFETY UNDER OPERATING CONDITIONS OF ROAD TUNNELS, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE DICTATES OF THE REGULATIONS IN FORCE; THE IDENTIFICATION OF ROAD DANGER FACTORS FOR THE DEFINITION OF ATTENTION CLASSES AND FOR RISK ANALYSES.
THE STUDENT WILL:
- ACQUIRE THE KNOWLEDGE RELATED TO: THE METHODS OF DIAGNOSING ROAD TUNNEL DEFECTS AND THEIR REPAIR, AS WELL AS THE METHODS OF CARRYING OUT MEASURES TO KEEP THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE STRUCTURE-SOIL/ROCK SYSTEM UNDER OBSERVATION AND TO ASSESS ITS EFFICIENCY AND SAFETY STATUS IN THE SHORT AND LONG TERM; THE TOOLS AND METHODS FOR DETECTING CRITICAL ROAD CONDITIONS, AND MONITORING TO ENSURE AN ADEQUATE LEVEL OF TRAFFIC SAFETY,
- UNDERSTAND THE METHODS AND MODELS FOR ANALYSING RISK SCENARIOS AND DATA USEFUL FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF ROAD TUNNELS.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE IN ORDER TO: PREVENT THE ATTAINMENT OF LIMIT STATES AND CRITICALITIES THAT MAY COMPROMISE, RESPECTIVELY, THE FUNCTIONALITY OF ROAD TUNNELS AND THE SAFETY OF TRAFFIC;
- PROPOSE INFRASTRUCTURAL AND/OR TRAFFIC CONTROL SOLUTIONS FOR THE MOST APPROPRIATE MANAGEMENT OF ROAD TUNNELS IN THE LIGHT OF THE ADVANCEMENT OF TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- PLAN AND CHOOSE THE MOST APPROPRIATE TOOLS FOR THE MONITORING AND DIAGNOSTICS AND FOR THE CRITICAL AND SYSTEMATIC ANALYSIS OF THE ACQUIRED DATA FOR THE UPGRADING, THE MAINTENANCE OVER TIME OF THE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS, AND THE IN-SERVICE MANAGEMENT OF ROAD TUNNELS;
- IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE RISK ANALYSIS METHODS AND MODELS IN RELATION TO DIFFERENT SCENARIOS.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- WORK IN GROUPS;
- PRESENT, WITH APPROPRIATE TECHNICAL LANGUAGE AND GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION, THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED AND THE METHODS USED, ALSO ENHANCING THE ADOPTION OF INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO SITUATIONS OTHER THAN THOSE DEALT WITH DURING THE COURSE
- DEEPEN THE TOPICS DEALT WITH BY USING METHODS DIFFERENT FROM OR COMPLEMENTARY TO THOSE EXPOUNDED.
Prerequisites
THE TEACHING ASSUMES KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTENTS OF THE GEOTECHNICS (12 CFU) AND ROADS, RAILWAYS AND AIRPORTS (6 CFU) COURSES AND THAT THE STUDENT KNOWS HOW TO PERFORM NUMERICAL ANALYSES.
Contents
CRITERIA AND DESIGN PHASES OF ROAD TUNNELS. REGULATIONS IN FORCE AND EXECUTION TECHNIQUES FOR ROAD TUNNELS (6 HOURS LECTURE). MONITORING AND VERIFICATION SYSTEMS OF THE WORKS IN PROGRESS AND IN OPERATION (6 HOURS LECTURE, 2 HOURS TUTORIAL). CLASSICAL AND INNOVATIVE DIAGNOSTICS, ALSO FOR THE EVALUATION OF CONSTRUCTION DEFECTS (6 HOURS LECTURE). OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT FOR THE RESOLUTION OF CONSTRUCTION NON-CONFORMITIES WITH THE AID OF SUITABLE STANDARDISED PROCEDURES (4 HOURS LECTURE). PERFORMANCE OF INSPECTIONS PREPARATORY TO THE UPGRADING PHASE OF ROAD TUNNELS (4 HOURS LECTURE, 2 HOURS TUTORIAL).
CRITERIA AND METHODS FOR THE NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF ACCIDENT DATA IN TUNNELS (5 HOURS LECTURE, 2 HOURS TUTORIAL). MODELS AND METHODS FOR NUMERICAL SIMULATION BASED ON COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS IN CASE OF FIRE IN CLOSED SPACES SUCH AS ROAD TUNNELS (4 HOURS LECTURE, 2 HOURS TUTORIAL). RISK ANALYSIS: ACCIDENT RATE, EVENT TREE, FAULT TREE, RISK TYPES, RISK LEVEL CALCULATION, RISK ACCEPTABILITY CRITERIA, F-N CURVES, ALARP DOMAIN (5 HOURS LECTURE, 2 HOURS TUTORIAL). ATTENTION CLASSES OF ROAD TUNNELS (5 HOURS LECTURE, 2 HOURS TUTORIAL). SPALLING PHENOMENON OF THE CONCRETE LINING OF ROAD TUNNELS (2 HOURS LECTURE). SAFETY MANAGEMENT MEASURES (1 HOUR LECTURE).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE COMPRISES THEORETICAL LECTURES (4.8 CFU) AND CLASSROOM TUTORIALS (1.2 CFU). THE TUTORIALS INVOLVE THE DEVELOPMENT OF PAPERS RELATING TO THE MAIN TOPICS OF THE COURSE WITH A FOCUS ON APPLICATION ASPECTS.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SET OBJECTIVES WILL TAKE PLACE BY MEANS OF AN ORAL EXAM SCHEDULED AT THE END OF THE COURSE. THIS ORAL EXAM (LASTING APPROXIMATELY HALF AN HOUR) NORMALLY INCLUDES THREE QUESTIONS ON THE THEORETICAL AND APPLICATIVE ASPECTS ADDRESSED IN THE COURSE. THE PURPOSE OF THIS EXAM IS TO VERIFY - ON THE BASIS OF THE RELEVANCE AND EXHAUSTIVENESS OF THE ANSWERS GIVEN - THE STUDENT'S LEVEL OF IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY TO CONNECT THE TOPICS, AND ABILITY IN CLARITY AND CRITICAL SYNTHESIS.
THE MINIMUM MARK (18) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT HAS A FRAGMENTARY KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS AND SHOWS A MODEST ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO PRACTICAL CASES; THE MAXIMUM MARK (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS AND SHOWS A REMARKABLE ABILITY TO LINK TOGETHER THE VARIOUS TOPICS OF THE COURSE, ENHANCING IT IN SOLVING APPLICATION PROBLEMS.
FULL SATISFACTION OF ALL THE ABOVE-MENTIONED REQUIREMENTS WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FOR THE PURPOSES OF HONOURS.
