Objectives
THE COURSE “PLANT PHYSIOLOGY” IS AIMED AT INTRODUCING STUDENTS TOWARD THE COMPREHENSION OF THE MAIN MOLECULAR AND PHYSIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS REGULATING THE DIFFERENTIATION, GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PLANTS IN NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS AS WELL AS UNDER CROPPING SYSTEMS. THE STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN AND DISCUSS SINGLE AND INTEGRATED PLANT PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES, WITH MAJOR EMPHASIS ON PHOTOSYNTHESIS, TRANSPORT OF WATER AND SOLUTES, MINERAL NUTRITION, AND ENVIRONMENTAL AND HORMONAL CONTROL OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. EACH PROCESS WILL BE EXAMINED AT THE BIOCHEMICAL, CELLULAR, MOLECULAR AND ORGANISMAL LEVEL SO AS TO PROVIDE A MORE COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING OF EACH PROCESS.2) APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING- THE COURSE IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THE STUDENTS THE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL TOOLS TO UNDERSTAND AND CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE MAIN PLANT PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS UNDERLYING THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF PLANTS UNDER NATURAL AND CROPPING ENVIRONMENT. STUDENTS WILL HAVE BASIC KNOWLWDGE TO UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CELL/PLANT STRUCTRES AND FUNCTIONS; THE MAIN PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESSES (E.G. WATER AND NUTRIENTS UPTALE AND TRANSPORT; SYNTEHSIS OF ORGANIC MOLECULES THROUGH PHOTOSYNTHESIS; PERCEPTION AND TRANSDUCTION OF PLANT HORMONES AND OTHER PHYSICAL EXTERNAL AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS IN REGULATING PLANT GROWTH AND DEVELOPMEN
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF PLANT BIOLOGY, BOTANY, PHYSICS, GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, BIOCHEMISTRY
Contents
INTRODUCTION - PLANT BIOLOGY, WATER AND PLANT CELLS WATER BALANCE, TRANSLOCATION AND TRANSPIRATION PATHWAYS MINERAL NUTRITION: ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS MINERAL NUTRITION: SOIL, ROOTS AND SHOOTS SOLUTE TRANSPORT: DIFFUSION AND ACTIVE AND PASSIVE TRANSPORT. PHOTOSYNTHESIS: GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS. THE LIGHT REACTIONS. PHOTOSYNTHESIS: CARBON ASSIMILATION PHOTORESPIRATION C3, C4 AND CAM PLANTS. PHLOEM TRANSLOCATION. NUTRIENT ASSIMILATION: NITROGEN NUTRIEN ASSIMILATION: OTHER NUTRIENTS. Teaching Methods
LECTURES WILL BE CONDUCTED THROUGH THE AID OF A POWER POINT SUPPORT. IT IS PLANNED TO SHOW PRESENTATIONS FULL OF PICTURES, GRAPHS AND DIAGRAMS THAT ENABLE MAXIMUM UNDERSTANDING AND SYNTHESIS OF THE TOPICS COVERED.

Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION TESTS ARE INTENDED TO ENSURE THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE AIMS OF TEACHING. WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATIONS. WRITTEN TEXT: 30 MULTIPLE CHOISE QUESTIONS (45 MINUTES, NO NEGATIVE MARKS, MINIMUM SCORE 18/30, MAXIMUM 30/30) REGARDING THE MAIN LEARNING OUTCOMES. THE WRITTEN TEST (18/30) IS A PREREQUISITE FOR THE ORAL EXAMINATION.
DURING THE COURSE, STUDENTS HAVE ALSO THE POSSIBILITY TO TAKE THREE PARTIAL WRITTEN TESTS, FOCUSED ON:
-A FIRST WRITTEN TEST, COMPREHENSIVE OF 18 MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS AND 3 OPEN QUESTIONS ON PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND SECONDARY METABOLISM (60 MIN. AVAILABLE, MAXIMUM SCORE 30 POINTS, MINIMUM SCORE 18 POINTS TO BE PASSED):
-A SECOND WRITTEN TEST, COMPREHENSIVE OF 18 MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS AND 3 OPEN QUESTIONS ON PLANT MINERAL NUTRITION, SOIL, ROOTS AND SHOOTS SOLUTE TRANSPORT: DIFFUSION AND ACTIVE AND PASSIVE TRANSPORT, TRANSLOCATION AND TRANSPORT IN PLANTS (60 MIN. AVAILABLE, MAXIMUM SCORE 30 POINTS, MINIMUM SCORE 18 POINTS TO BE PASSED):
-A THIRD WRITTEN TEST, COMPREHENSIVE OF 18 MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS AND 3 OPEN QUESTIONS ON NUTRIENT ASSIMILATION, NITROGEN ASSIMILATION, OTHER NUTRIENTS AND HORMONES. (60 MINUTES AVAILABLE, MAXIMUM SCORE 18 POINTS, MINIMUM SCORE 30 POINTS TO BE PASSED)
FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT PERFORMED THE WRITTEN TESTS, OR WHO HAS REFUSED THE SCORE OBTAINED IN THE WRITTEN TESTS OR HAVE NOT PASSED THE WRITTEN TESTS, THE FINAL EVALUATION CONSISTS OF: -A WRITTEN TEST, COMPREHENSIVE OF 30 MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS (45 MINUTES AVAILABLE, MINIMUM SCORE 18/30, MAXIMUM 30/30);.PASSING THIS TEST IS MANDATORY TO ACCESS TO THE ORAL INTERVIEW;
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE SUCCESS OF THE PLANNED COURSE INCLUDES AN ORAL EXAMINATION. BY MEANS OF SPECIFIC QUESTIONS, IT WILL BE DETERMINED WHETHER THE STUDENT HAS ACQUIRED GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE COURSE CONTENTS, AND IF THE STUDENT GAINED THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE FUNCTION OF PLANTS AND HAS THE BASIC SKILLS TO RECOGNIZE AND DESCRIBE PLANT PHYSIOLOGY. THE STUDENT DISCUSSING THE MAIN TOPICS OF THE COURSE, HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE CRITICAL THOUGHT AND AWARENESS OF THE STRUCTURE OF THE FIELD OF STUDY.
