THE AIM OF THE FLUID MACHINES COURSE IS TO PROVIDE THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN CONCEPTS OF ENERGY SOURCES, ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEMS, TURBINES, PUMPS AND COMPRESSORS. IT ALSO AIMS TO PROVIDE THE MAIN TOOLS FOR PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS AND PRELIMINARY SIZING OF THE MAIN THERMAL POWER PLANTS, PUMPS AND COMPRESSORS. THE COURSE, HELD IN THE SECOND SEMESTER OF THE SECOND YEAR OF THE DEGREE IN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING, IS OF 6 CREDITS (ECTS). KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - ENGINEERING ANALYSIS: AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE ON: -ENERGY CONVERSION, ENERGY BALANCE AND OPTIMAL USE OF ENERGY SOURCES; -ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES ASSOCIATED TO CONVENTIONAL, ALTERNATIVE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES; -OPERATING PRINCIPLES OF VARIOUS FLUID MACHINES AND THERMAL ENGINE SYSTEMS; -MAIN TECHNIQUES USED IN ENGINEERING PRACTICE TO INCREASE THE PERFORMANCE AND POWER OF THERMAL ENGINE SYSTEMS; -FLUID MACHINES APPLICATIONS AND THEIR INSTALLATION IN INDUSTRIAL PLANTS; -CALCULATION METHODS FOR PRELIMINARY SIZING OF ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEMS WITHIN A TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC CONTEXT; -SYSTEMS AND PLANT FOR ENERGY CONVERSION, CHARACTERISTIC CURVES OF PUMPS AND COMPRESSORS, ALONG WITH THEIR COUPLING WITH THE PLANT. APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - ENGINEERING DESIGN: AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE MAIN SKILLS (I.E. THE ABILITY TO APPLY ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE) GAINED BY THE STUDENT WILL BE RELATED TO: -ENGINEERING ANALYSIS: ANALYSIS OF THE ENERGETIC FLUXES WITHIN ENERGY CONVERSION PLANTS RELATED TO ENERGY SAVINGS AND ENVIRONEMANTAL IMPACT; -ENGINEERING DESIGN: CHOICE AND PRELIMINARY SIZING OF TURBINES, PUMPS AND COMPRESSORS. MAKING JUDGMENTS - ENGINEERING PRACTICE: THE STUDENT IS CAPABLE OF IDENTIFYING THE MOST SUITABLE ENERGY CONVERTION SYSTEMS AND THE TYPE OF FLUID MACHINES TO BE INSTALLED IN A PLANT, OPTIMIZING THE ENERGY FLUXES ACCORDING TO THE ANALYSED CONTEXT. TRANSVERSAL SKILLS - COMMUNICATION SKILLS: THE STUDENT IS CAPABLE OF REPRESENTING THE FLUID MACHINES AND THE THERMAL ENGINE PLANTS, INCLUDING THE DESCRIPTION OF THE TRANSFORMATIONS AND THE ENERGY EXCHANGES, BOTH IN ORAL AND WRITTEN FORM, WITH A SUITABLE TECHNICAL TERMINOLOGY. TRANSVERSAL SKILLS - ABILITY TO LEARN THE STUDENT IS CAPABLE OF APPLYING THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE AND DEEPEN THE DISCUSSED TOPICS WITH SOURCES DIFFERENT FROM THOSE SUGGESTED. TRANSVERSAL SKILLS - INVESTIGATION SKILLS: THE STUDENT IS CAPABLE OF ORGANIZING AND PERFORMING EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS ON FLUID MACHINES, UNDERSTANDING THE ACQUIRED EXPERIMENTAL DATA AND DRAWING CONCLUSIONS. |
