STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE ADVANCED CONCEPTS BASED ON THE PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN, RELATED TO THE ADOPTION OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE DISABLED POPULATION AND TO ACCESSIBILITY DESIGN FOR LEARNING. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: -PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN -ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE FOR THE AGED POPULATION AND THE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES -PRINCIPLES OF ACCESSIBILITY DESIGN FOR LEARNING -ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR LEARNING -ACCESSIBILITY TESTING METHODOLOGIES ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING -HOW TO APPLY TECHNOLOGY TOOLS TO CREATE BARRIER-FREE ACCESSIBILITY AND INCREASE INDEPENDENCE AND IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE OF INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES AND OLDER ADULTS -HOW TO SYSTEMATICALLY PLAN INSTRUCTION ACCORDING TO UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING (UDL) PRINCIPLES -HOW TO SELECT, ADAPT, AND APPLY ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY TO PROMOTE COMMUNICATION, INDEPENDENCE, SOCIALIZATION, ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE, AND FUNCTIONAL SKILLS BASED ON INDIVIDUAL LEARNER NEEDS - HOW TO EVALUATE A SOFTWARE SYSTEM AGAINST ACCESSIBILITY. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
NO SPECIAL TECHNICAL SKILLS ARE REQUIRED. KNOWLEDGE ABOUT FUNDAMENTALS ON HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION CAN BE USEFUL. |
Contents | |
---|---|
•PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN •INTRODUCTION TO ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY – FROM LOW TO HIGH TECH •RELEVANT ITALIAN AND INTERNATIONAL LEGISLATION AND REGULATIONS AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS FOR ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY •OVERVIEW OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE FOR THE AGED POPULATION AND THE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES •PRINCIPLES OF ACCESSIBILITY DESIGN FOR LEARNING •OVERVIEW OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR LEARNING •ENGINEERING, MEDICAL, AND SOCIAL ISSUES FACING ENGINEERS, RESEARCHERS, ENTREPRENEURS, CLINICIANS, OLDER ADULTS, AND INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES IN THE DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, AND USE OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY. •COLLABORATIVE PROCESS OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY NEEDS ASSESSMENT •MODELS FOR SELECTION OF ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY DEVICES AND SERVICES •CASE STUDIES. |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
LESSONS WILL TAKE PLACE WITH THE HELP OF MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS. ALL SUBJECTS WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY PRACTICAL EXERCISES AND SIGNIFICANT CASE STUDIES. STUDENTS WILL BE ENGAGED IN A TEAM-BASED PROJECT EXPERIENCE THAT EXERCISES TEAM WORKING SKILLS AND APPLIES AN ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS TO ADDRESS DIFFICULTIES EXPERIENCED BY INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES AND OLDER ADULTS. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND CLASSES REGULARLY, ALTHOUGH THIS IS NOT STRICTLY REQUIRED TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE COURSE PROVIDES HOMEWORK WITH BISETTIMANAL CADENCE TO MONITOR LEARNING PROGRESS. THE EXAM CONSISTS IN THE REALIZATION, PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION OF A PROJECT DRAWN UP BY STUDENTS IN SMALL GROUPS, MEANT TO VERIFY THE ACQUIRED PRACTICAL CAPACITIES AND IN A WRITTEN TEST (DURATION OF 2 HOURS) RELATED TO A CASE STUDY APPLICATION, THROUGH WHICH IT IS POSSIBLE TO VERIFY STUDENT’S COMPREHENSION OF THE ISSUES RELATED TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE UNIVERSAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES AS WELL AS HIS/HER ABILITY TO EVALUATE THE GRADE OF ACCESSIBILITY OF A SOFTWARE SYSTEM. EACH TEST WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE FINAL EVALUATION WITH A WEIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 50%. |
