Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH THE KNOWLEDGE RELATING TO THE RULES OF NOMENCLATURE AND THE CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MAIN FUNCTIONAL GROUPS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. THE COURSE ALSO AIMS TO
PROVIDE THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE PRINCIPLES GUIDING THE ORGANIC REACTIONS AND LEADING TO THE CORRECT INTERPRETATION OF REACTION MECHANISMS. ANOTHER OBJECTIVE IS TO PROMOTE THE KNOWLEDGE AND
UNDERSTANDING OF THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL ASPECTS RELATED TO STATIC AND DYNAMIC STEREOCHEMISTRY.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF:
-NOMENCLATURE AND STRUCTURE OF THE MAIN FUNCTIONAL GROUPS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS,
-STEREOCHEMISTRY
-CHEMICAL REACTIVITY AND SYNTHESIS OF THE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
-REACTION MECHANISMS.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE REACTION MECHANISMS
-SOLVE PROBLEMS CONCERNING THE SYNTHESIS OF SIMPLE ORGANIC MOLECULES.
Prerequisites
FOR A FULL COMPREHENSION AND APPLICATION OF THE TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE CLASS KNOWLEDGE OF THE FOLLWING TOPICS IS MANDATORY: CHEMICAL SYMBOLS, PERIODIC TABLE OF ELEMENTS, INORGANIC NOMENCLATURE, ACID-BASE AND REDOX REACTIONS, CHEMICAL KINETIC AND THERMODYNAMIC PARAMETERS, CHEMICAL BOND AND HYBRIDATION. IT IS NEEDED TO PASS THE PREPARATORY EXAM OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY
Contents
THE CLASS INCLUDES 80 HOURS OF TEACHING ACTIVITY AND 16 HOURS PRACTICE ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF EXERCISES ON THE MAIN TOPICS.
BELOW THE TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE TEACHING ACTIVITY:
1: CHEMICAL BONDS AND ORGANIC MOLECULE’S STRUCTURE REPRESENTATION (2 HOURS).
2: IUPAC NOMENCLATURE RULES OF ORGANIC COMPOUND, ACID-BASE REACTIONS (2 HOURS)
STRUCTURE, GENERAL PROPERTIES, SYNTHETIC METHODS AND REACTIVITY OF THE MAIN ORGANIC COMPOUND CLASSES:
3: ALKANES AND CYCLOALKANES (8 HOURS)
4: ALKENES (6 HOURS)
5: ALKYNES (4 HOURS)
6: CONJUGATED UNSATURATED SYSTEMS (4 HOURS)
7: AROMATIC COMPOUNDS (12 HOURS)
8: HALOGENATED COMPUNDS (6 HOURS)
9: ORGANOMETALLICS (2 HOURS)
10: ALCOHOLS, FENOLS, ETHERS (6 HOURS)
11: CARBONYL COMPOUNDS (8 HOUR)
12: CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND FUNCTIONAL DERIVATIVES (8 HOURS)
13: AMINES (4 HOURS)
14: BETA-DICARBONYLIC COMPOUNDS (4 HOURS)
15: HETEROCYCLES (2 HOURS)
16: CARBOHYDRATES (2 HOURS)
AMONG ORGANIC REACTIONS ANALYSIS, REACTION MECHANISMS AND STEREOCHEMISTRY ASPECTS WILL BE DEEPLY EXAMINED
Teaching Methods
THE CLASS INCLUDES 80 HOURS OF TEACHING ACTIVITY, AND 16 HOURS OF PRACTICE, PLANNED IN 8 CLASSES DISTRIBUTES DURING THE COURSE, DEVOTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF EXERCISES ON THE TOPICS DISCUSSED.
THE TEACHING ACTIVITY WILL ALOW STUDENTS TO DEVELOP THE KNOWLEDGE ON THE TOPICS OF THE CLASS, WHILE THE PRACTICE WILL GIVE THEM THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE GAINED KNOWLEDGE.
PARTICIPATION TO THE CLASS ACTIVITIES (TEACHING AND PRACTICE) IS MANDATORY. STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO GET THE EXAMINATION IF THEIR ATTENDANCE IS GREATER THAN 70%. CLASS ATTENDANCE IS CHECKED ONLINE
Verification of learning
THE EXAM IS COMPOSED BY A WRITING TEST AND AN ORAL TEST. THE WRITTEN TEST IS CARRIED OUT BEFORE THE ORAL TEST AND IS CONSIDERED PASSED REACHING A MINIMUM PREDETERMINED THRESHOLD (22/40), FIXED THROUGH AN APPROPRIATE EVALUATION GRID. THE WRITTEN TEST WILL LAST FOR TWO HOURS AND CONSISTS OF 3 NOMENCLATURE EXERCISES (6 POINTS), 1 EXERCISE ON STEREOCHEMISTRY (4 POINTS), 5 EXERCISES ON REACTIVITY OF FUNCTIONAL GROUPS (10 POINTS), 2 EXERCISES ON MULTISTEPS ORGANIC SYNTHESIS (10 POINTS), 2 EXERCISES ON REACTION MECHANISMS (10 POINTS).
THE ORAL TEST WILL BE ACCESSIBLE ONLY TO STUDENTS REACHING THE MINIMUM THRESHOLD AT THE WRITTEN TEST, AND CONSISTS IN A DISCUSSION ON THE WRITTEN TEST, THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS INDICATED IN THE COURSE PROGRAM. THE ORAL TEST LAST FOR A MAXIMUM TIME OF 45 MINUTES. THE MINIMUM SCORE (18/30) IN THE ORAL TEST IS REACHED WITH A SUFFICIENT DISCUSSION ON THE PROGRAM ARGUMENTS. THE MAXIMUM SCORE (30/30) IS REACHED WHEN THE STUDENT CORRECTLY DISCUSS ALL THE ARGUMENTS WITH THE PROPER STYLE.
THE FINAL EVALUATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE IS SCORED ON A VOTE OUT OF THIRTY (18 TO 30), WHICH VALUE WILL RESULT FROM COMBINATION OF THE WRITTEN (TRANSFORMED IN THIRTIETH) AND ORAL MARKS (WEIGHED MEAN WRITTEN:ORAL TESTS 1:3)
