Objectives
THE PURPOSE OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE THEORETICAL AND APPLICATIVE KNOWLEDGE BOTH ON THE DESIGN AND EXECUTION OF POWER PLANTS, AND ON ELECTRICAL SAFETY PRINCIPLES AND ON THE CRITERIA OF SELECTION AND USE OF MACHINES AND ELECTRIC DRIVES IN THE CIVIL AND INDUSTRIAL SECTOR. THE TEACHING APPROACH ALLOWS THE STUDENT TO GRANT THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF ELECTRICAL APPLICATIONS AND ELECTROMECHANICAL CONVERSION OF ENERGY FOR ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS CONCERNING THE INDUSTRIAL, AUTOMOTIVE AND RAILWAY TRACTION SECTORS.
Prerequisites
FOR THE SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES, MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS AND ELECTROTECHNIC KNOWLEDGE HAVE REQUIRED.
Contents
COMPONENTS FOR POWER DISTRIBUTION AND TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS: POWER CABLES. PROTECTION SYSTEMS: CIRCUIT BREAKERS, DIFFERENTIAL RELAYS, FUSES. SWITCHBOARDS. ELECTRICAL SAFETY FOUNDATIONS: PROTECTION SYSTEMS AGAINST DIRECT AND INDIRECT CONTACTS. GROUND SYSTEMS. STANDARD. LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEMS. DESIGN AND VERIFICATION OF INDUSTRIAL AND RESIDENTIAL ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS.
DIMENSION CRITERIA AND BASIC DESIGN OF LV POWER PLANT BY USING CAD APPLICATIONS. EXAMPLES OF APPLICATIONS.
STATIC CONVERSION OF ENERGY: MAIN AC/DC, DC/DC AND DC/AC CONVERTERS. PWM CONTROL TECHNIQUE. EXAMPLES OF APPLICATIONS CONCERNING THE INDUSTRIAL, AUTOMOTIVE, AND RAILWAY SECTOR.
FROM THE PHYSICS LAWS TO ROTATING MACHINES: BASIC PRINCIPLES OF ELECTROMECHANICAL ENERGY CONVERSION.
ASYNCRONOUS MOTORS, CONTINUOUS CURRENT MOTORS, BRUSHLESS MOTORS, STEP MOTORS: EQUIVALENT CIRCUITS AND CHARACTERISTICS SPEED-TORQUE. CHOICE AND SIZING CRITERIA.
POWER DRIVE: CONVERTER-MOTOR-CONTROL INTEGRATION. TORQUE AND SPEED CONTROL. RIGENERATING OPERATION. EXAMPLES OF APPLICATIONS.

Teaching Methods
THERE WILL BE LECTURES IN THE CLASSROOM, LABORATORY ACTIVITIES AND TECHNICAL VISITS AT COMPANIES WORKING IN ELECTRIC MOBILITY FIELD AND IN THE POWER SYSTEM (PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION) AREA. DURING THE COURSE STUDENTS ARE ORGANIZED INTO WORKING GROUPS TO DEVELOP A PROJECT WHERE IS APPLIED ONE OF THE ISSUES ADDRESSED ON A TOPIC OF THE COURSE. THE WORK IS CARRIED OUT UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A TUTOR COMING FROM A COMPANY TUTOR.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF ONLY THE ORAL EXAM. DURING THE EXAMINATION IS ALSO DISCUSSED THE SHORT THESIS, REPRESENTING ABOUT THE 33% OF FINAL RESULT
