Objectives
THE COURSE INTRODUCES THE STUDENTS TO THE STRUCTURE OF MATTER IN TERMS OF THE ELECTRONIC STRUCTURE OF ATOMS AND MOLECULES. A LARGE FOCUS WILL BE ON THE NATURE OF THE CHEMICAL BOND AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE MACROSCOPIC PROPERTIES OF MATTER. THE THERMODYNAMIC AND KINETIC PRINCIPLES REGULATING THE CHEMICAL PROCESSES WILL BE ILLUSTRATED AND DISCUSSED. THE COURSE PROVIDES A CULTURAL BACKGROUND FOR THE FOLLOWING COURSE OF CHEMISTRY, GIVING BASIC KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND THE MAIN CHEMICAL PHENOMENA. MOREOVER, IT WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT THE QUANTITATIVE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SUBSTANCES UNDERGOING CHEMICAL REACTIONS.

THE MAIN ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE WILL BE:
-AN OUTLINE OF HISTORY OF CHEMISTRY;
- BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER;
- KNOWLEDGE ABOUT PRINCIPLES OF CHEMICAL REACTIVITY;
- KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE BASIC CHEMICAL / PHYSICAL FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE CHEMICAL REACTIONS;
-FAMILIARIZATION WITH STOICHIOMETRIC CALCULATIONS.

THE MAIN ABILITIES WILL BE:
-TO COMMUNICATE CLEARLY AND EFFECTIVELY THE ACQUIRED CONCEPTS;
-TO EVALUATE THE DIFFERENT TRANSFORMATIONS OF MATTER AND APPLY THE CORRECT THEORETICAL INTERPRETATION;
-TO SOLVE STOICHIOMETRIC PROBLEMS;
-TO USE THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD OF INVESTIGATION.
Prerequisites
KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY LEARNED IN THE HIGH SCHOOL.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE (112 HOURS) IS DIVIDED INTO LESSONS AND EXERCISES AS FOLLOWS:
LESSONS (8 CFU, 64 HOURS).
EXERCISES (4 CFU, 48 HOURS).
TO ATTEND THEORETICAL LESSONS IS NOT MANDATORY BUT STRONGLY SUGGESTED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TEACHING IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAM THAT IS EVALUATED IN THIRTY.
THE EXAM CONSISTS IN AN ORAL EXAMINATION, WHICH MUST BE PRECEDED BY A POSITIVE MARK FOR THE WRITTEN EXAM OF STOCHIOMETRY.
THE WRITTEN TEST INVOLVES THE RESOLUTION OF AT LEAST 4 STECHIOMETRIC EXERCISES. THE TEST TAKES PLACE BEFORE THE ORAL TEST AND IS CONSIDERED TO BE OVERCOME WITH THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE MINIMUM PRESCRIBED SCORE. THE WRITTEN TEST USUALLY LASTS NOT LESS THAN 120 MINUTES AND IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE ABILITY TO PROPERLY APPLY THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE, THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE PROPOSED PROBLEMS.
STUDENTS ATTENDING THE COURSE HAVE THE CHANCE OF TAKING THREE WRITTEN TESTS, WHOSE POSITIVE RESULTS, CAN BE WORTH THE EXEMPTION OF THE FINAL WRITTEN TEST.
THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS OF THE TEACHING PROGRAM AND IS INTENDED TO ASCERTAIN THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT AS WELL AS TO VERIFY THE EXPOSURE CAPACITY BY USING THE
APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO INDEPENDENTLY ORGANIZE THE EXHIBITION ON THE SAME SUBJECTS WITH A THEORETICAL CONTENT.
MINIMUM SCORE (18/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH SUPERFICIAL KNOWLEDGE AND LIMITED COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS SUFFICIENT CLARITY SKILLS.
MAXIMUM SCORE (30/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH DEEP KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS RIGOROUS CLARITY SKILLS AND GOOD DEDUCTIVE REASONING AND THINKING SKILLS

SCORE OF 30/30 CUM LAUDE WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH EXCELLENT KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS EXCELLENT CLARITY SKILLS AND DEDUCTIVE REASONING AND THINKING SKILLS.
