Objectives
THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO REACH A SOLID KNOWLEDGE THANKS TO A SURVEY OF MATERIALS AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL CONTEXTS IN ORDER TO PUT IN EVIDENCE SIMILARITIES AS WELL AS METAMORPHOSES BETWEEN GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD. THE AIM IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO A WIDER RANGE OF APPROACHES BY SHOWING HOW DIFFERENT KINDS OF SOCIETIES AND THE AVAILABILITY OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF EVIDENCE HAVE ELICITED DIFFERENT RESPONSES BOTH IN THE PAST AND TODAY.
THE COURSE INTENDS TO PROVIDE A DEEPER KNOWLEDGE ON RELEVANT TOPICS OF THE GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD OBSERVED BY THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL DATA.
TAKING THIS COURSE WILL ALLOW STUDENTS:
- TO FOCUS ON MATERIAL CULTURE OF THE GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD;
- TO BECOME AWARE OF THE SEVERAL MEANINGS OF THE MONUMENTAL CONTEXTS;
- TO BE ABLE TO EMPLOY CRITICAL THINKING TO CONTEXTUALIZE GREEK AND ROMAN WORLD;
- TO BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF SELECTED ARCHAEOLOGICAL ARTIFACTS TOGETHER WITH THEIR SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, CULTURAL AND RELIGIOUS CONNECTIONS.
UPON COMPLETION OF THE COURSE STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE:
- TO TALK MEANINGFULLY ABOUT THE ANCIENT MATERIAL REMAINS IN TERMS OF WHAT THEY SEE AND KNOW ABOUT HISTORY, DAILY LIFE, AND CULTURE;
- TO APPLY APPROPRIATE METHODS AIMED TO THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE HISTORICAL CONTEXTS.
THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO REACH A SOLID KNOWLEDGE:
- TO ENGAGE WITH THE PROCESS AND PROBLEMS SURROUNDING DISCOVERING, PRESERVING, AND PRESENTING THE MATERIAL LEGACY OF THE PAST.
- TO BE ABLE TO EMPLOY CRITICAL THINKING TO CONTEXTUALIZE, DISCUSS AND EVALUATE HOW GREEK AND ROMAN CONTEXTS WERE CREATED AND JUSTIFIED:
COMPETENCE IS ORIENTED TO STIMULATE AND TO PROMOTE ABILITY IN COMMUNICATION BY MEANS OF SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS INCLUDING FOREIGN LANGUAGES READINGS.
STUDENTS HAVE TO BE ABLE:
- TO USE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS INCLUDED WEBSITE DATA;
- TO DEEPEN THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE;
- TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND METHODS TO NEW SAMPLES OF RESEARCH.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF GREEK AND ROMAN ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY OF ART.

3. MODELS OF RELIGIOUS ACTIVITIES: SANCTUARIES, CEREMONIES, GIFT TO DEITIES.
4. THE SPACE OF THE HOUSE: MODELS, TRANSFORMATIONS, LIFESTYLE.
5. THE SPACE OF THE SPECTACLE BETWEEN GREECE AND ROME.
6. WAR, WEAPONS AND DISPLAYING ENEMIES.
7. COMMUNICATION BY IMAGES:
HUMAN FIGURE, PORTRAIT, STATUES' LANGUAGE;
"HISTORIC" REPRESENTATION IN GREECE AND ROME;
DEITIES AND HEROES OF THE MYTH.
8. HANDLING DEATH: NECROPOLIS, FUNERAL MONUMENTS, ICONOGRAPHY.
9. SEEKING NEW SPACES AND MODELS: PERGAMO / VILLA ADRIANA.
10. REUSE OF ANTIQUITY: GREECE AND ROME BETWEEN FASCISM AND NAZISM.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS DESIGNED TO INCLUDE:
TAUGHT CLASSES;
READINGS AND RESEARCH SAMPLES BY STUDENTS;
SEMINARS REGARDING THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE.
ATTENDANCE OF THE COURSE IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
Verification of learning
VERBAL EXAM - AROUND 30 MINUTES - WHOSE EVALUATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING PARAMETERS:
KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS;
CRITICAL ABILITY,
ABILITY IN COMMUNICATION.
MINIMUM LEVEL OF POSITIVE EVALUATION WILL BE ACQUIRED BY A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS.
A BETTER EVALUATION WILL BE ACQUIRED BY THE FOLLOWING SKILLS:
IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS;
ABILITY IN COMMUNICATION DISPLAYING AN ACCURATELY SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE.
THE UPPER LEVEL OF EVALUATION WILL BE ACQUIRED BY STUDENTS ABLE TO ELABORATE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE SEVERAL THEMES AND CONTEXTS.
Texts
BIBLIOGRAPHY AND EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL WILL BE PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE.
