Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING THE STUDENTS WITH THEORETICAL AND OPERATIONAL KNOWLEDGE RELATIVE TO THE MEASUREMENTS OF PHYSICAL QUANTITIES OF ENVIRONMENTAL INTEREST, THE TYPE OF INSTRUMENTS AND SENSORS AVAILABLE, COMPUTER INTERFACING AND DATA TRANSMISSION TECHNIQUES.
Prerequisites
ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL PHYSICS AND IN PARTICULAR ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS AND ELECTROMAGNETISM.
MASTERING CALCULUS (LIMITS, DERIVATIVES, INTEGRALS, STUDY OF FUNCTIONS).
MASTERING COMPLEX NUMBERS.
Contents
LECTURES (3 CFU):
MEASUREMENT OF PHYSICAL QUANTITIES, MEASURING INSTRUMENTS.
RECAP OF LINEAR CIRCUIT THEORY.
ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS: OSCILLOSCOPE AND FUNCTION GENERATOR.
ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES: PROPAGATION AND CHARACTERISTIC IMPEDANCE
INSTRUMENTATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MEASURES.
TRANSDUCERS.
SPECTRAL MEASUREMENTS OF EM FIELDS.
DIGITAL SIGNALS AND DATA TRANSMISSION.
STRUCTURE OF A DIGITAL COMPUTER
INTERFACING INSTRUMENTATION
INTRODUCTION TO ELECTRON MICROSCOPY
INTRODUCTION TO X EDS ANALYSIS
INTRODUCTION TO X-RAY DIFFRACTOMETRY

LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS (3 CFU):

MEASUREMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PARAMETERS: TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY, LIGHT, NOISE, ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD, PH OF SOIL, WATER CONDUCTIVITY, CO2 LEVEL
PHOTOVOLTAIC CELLS
Teaching Methods
LECTURES ON THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE COURSE. (3CFU)
LABORATORY EXERCISES ORIENTED TO THE MEASUREMENT OF PHYSICAL QUANTITIES RELATED TO NATURAL AS WELL AS ANTHROPOGENIC ORIGIN. (3CFU)

ATTENDANCE OF FRONTAL LECTURES IS MANDATORY FOR AT LEAST 2/3 OF THE HOURS
ATTENDANCE OF LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS IS MANDATORY FOR AT LEAST 2/3 OF THE HOURS
MISSED EXPERIMENTS MAY BE RECOVERED IN DATES TO BE DEFINED (BY GROUPS OF STUDENTS)
Verification of learning
TO PASS THE EXAM THE STUDENT MUST PERFORM ALL THE LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS AND PRODUCE THE TECHNICAL REPORTS.
THE EXAM IS IN ORAL FORM IN WHICH THE STUDENT
- EXPLAINS THE WORK DONE IN THE LABORATORY (GRADE 0-9, OBTAINED EVALUATING THE GRASP OF CONCEPTS AND OPERATIONAL ACTIVITY AND CORRECTNESS OF THE EXPLANATIONS),
- ANSWERS TO THREE QUESTIONS REGARDING THE SUBJECTS OF THE LECTURES (GRADE 0-7 FOR EACH ANSWER, EVALUATED FOR CORRECTNESS, COMPLETENESS AND VOCABULARY, TOTAL 0-21).
THE EXAM IS PASSED IF A MINIMUM MARK OF 18 IS ACHIEVED. IF THE MARK OF 30 IS REACHED, THE EXAM MAY BE PASSED "CUM LAUDE" IF THE STUDENTS REMARKABLY MASTERS THE TAUGHT SUBJECTS.
THE POSSIBLE QUESTIONS ARE PUBLISHED IN ADVANCE ALONG WITH REFERENCE MATERIAL ON THE TEACHER'S WEB PAGE. EACH CANDIDATE RECEIVES A RANDOM SELECTION OF QUESTIONS.

THE EXAM CANNOT BE PASSED IF ONE OR MORE EXPERIMENT REPORTS ARE MISSING.
