Objectives
THE COURSE HAS THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE TO GIVE BASIC GENERAL SKILLS IN ELECTROMAGNETISM, BOTH THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL

THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE THEORETICAL AND APPLICATIVE KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND THE PHENOMENA AND FUNDAMENTAL LAWS OF ELECTROMAGNETISM. STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE A DEEP KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM, AND WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE ELECTRIC FIELD AND THE MAGNETIC FIELD.

THE COURSE TENDS TO GET THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO MATHEMATICALLY FORMALIZE ELECTOMAGNETISM PROBLEMS OF MODERATE DIFFICULTY FORMULATED IN NATURAL LANGUAGE, AND TO TAKE PROFIT FROM THIS FORMULATION TO SOLVE THEM. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO EXERCISES AND PRACTICAL LABORATORY EXERCISES, WHICH CONSTITUTE A SIGNIFICANT PART OF THE COURSE.

THE COURSE AIMS TO PROMOTE STUDENTS' INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT SO THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE PHYSICS CONCEPTS AND THEORIES AND APPLY THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS.

THE COURSE AIMS TO IMPROVE STUDENTS' COMMUNICATION SKILLS SO THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO CLEARLY EXPRESS THEIR IDEAS AND ARGUMENTS, USING APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE. OPPORTUNITIES WILL BE PROVIDED FOR STUDENTS TO CARRY OUT PRACTICAL LABORATORY EXPERIENCES WITH A CRITICAL SENSE, WRITE BRIEF REPORTS WITH LANGUAGE PROPERTY, AND TO PARTICIPATE ACTIVELY DURING THE LESSONS, ENCOURAGING THEM TO EXPOSE THEIR IDEAS, TO ASK QUESTIONS AND TO PARTICIPATE IN DISCUSSIONS.

THE COURSE AIMS TO PROMOTE STUDENTS' INDEPENDENT LEARNING ABILITY SO THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO DEVELOP EFFECTIVE STUDY STRATEGIES, CARRY OUT SIMPLE EXERCISES AND EXPERIMENTS IN ELECTROMAGNETISM WITH A CRITICAL SENSE, UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET THE RESULTS.
Prerequisites
THE COURSE ASSUMES FAMILIARITY WITH PHYSICS I AND MATHEMATICS I AND II.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONSISTS OF LECTURES (56 HOURS) AND LABORATORY EXERCISES (24 HOURS). THE LECTURES WILL ENABLE THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE THE NECESSARY THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE AND THE ABILITY TO PERFORM EXERCISES. THE LABORATORY EXERCISES WILL ALLOW THE STUDENT TO DEVELOP THE SKILLS TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE BOTH IN THE CONTEXT OF LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS AND IN SIMULATED EXPERIMENTS AND MORE COMPLEX APPLICATIVE EXERCISES.
Verification of learning
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE COURSE OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED THROUGH PASSING THE EXAM WITH A GRADE OUT OF THIRTY.

THE EXAM INCLUDES:
(1) A WRITTEN TEST AIMED AT ASSESSING PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY (WITH A GRADE OUT OF THIRTY OR EVALUATION BANDS: A=28-30, B=24-27, C=18-23, D=INSUFFICIENT)
(2) EVALUATION OF GROUP PROJECTS ON LABORATORY TOPICS (RESULT: PASS/FAIL)
(3) AN ORAL EXAM AIMED AT ASSESSING THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE DISCIPLINE.

THE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMS TAKE PLACE ON DIFFERENT SCHEDULED DAYS.

SUBMISSION OF LABORATORY PROJECTS IS A PREREQUISITE FOR ACCESSING THE WRITTEN TEST, AND THEREFORE THE ORAL EXAM.

THE WRITTEN TEST CONSISTS OF EXERCISES AND OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS, AND LASTS APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS.
THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS OF AN INTERVIEW WITH QUESTIONS AND DISCUSSION ON THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS SPECIFIED IN THE COURSE SYLLABUS AND IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACHIEVED BY THE STUDENT, AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO PRESENT USING APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO ORGANIZE THE PRESENTATION INDEPENDENTLY. THE ORAL TEST LASTS ABOUT HALF AN HOUR.

DURING THE COURSE, IT IS POSSIBLE TO TAKE A MID-TERM WRITTEN TEST, WHICH WILL COVER THE FIRST PART OF THE SYLLABUS (ELECTROSTATICS), AND SUCCESSFULLY PASSING IT MAY EXEMPT THE STUDENT FROM PART OF THE WRITTEN TEST.
THE PARTIAL EXEMPTION WILL BE VALID ONLY FOR THE EXAM SESSION IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE COMPLETION OF THE COURSE (SUMMER EXAM SESSION).

THE FINAL GRADE, EXPRESSED OUT OF THIRTY WITH POSSIBLE HONORS, WILL DEPEND ON THE OVERALL MASTERY OF THE COURSE CONTENT DEMONSTRATED IN THE WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMS.
THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE A COMPOSITE OF THE RESULTS OF THE ORAL AND WRITTEN TESTS, WITH A RELATIVE WEIGHT OF 75% FOR THE ORAL TEST AND 25% FOR THE WRITTEN TEST.

HONORS MAY BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS CREATIVELY DURING THE ORAL EXAM, SHOWING THE ABILITY TO THINK INDEPENDENTLY, FOR EXAMPLE, BY PROPOSING ALTERNATIVE DEMONSTRATIONS TO THOSE PRESENTED IN CLASS.
