Objectives
THE COURSE INTENDS TO PROVIDE CHEMICAL AND BIOMOLECULAR KNOWLEDGE OF AMINO ACIDS AND PROTEINS, NUCLEIC ACIDS, CARBOHYDRATES, LIPIDS USING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES ASSOCIATED WITH ORGANIC CHEMISTRY.

THE MAIN KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENTS WILL REGARD TO:

- CHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND REACTIVITY OF THE MAIN BIOMOLECULES AND BIOMACROMOLECULES CLASSES OF COMPOUNDS.
- MAIN INSTRUMENTAL METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THESE CLASSES OF COMPOUNDS.
- CHEMICAL SYNTHESIS METHODS AND AUTOMATED PROCEDURES.
- PROPERTIES OF ANALOGUES AND APPLICATIONS IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL FIELD.


THE MAIN SKILLS DEVELOPED BY THE STUDENTS WILL BE:

- ADDRESSING TO ANALYTICAL PROBLEMS OF COMPLEX MIXTURES OF BIOMOLECULES AND BIOMACROMOLECULES.
- RESOLVING PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE SYNTHESIS AND TO THE PURIFICATION OF BIOMACROMOLECULES.
- CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE IN THE FIELD.

- MONO-, OLIGO- AND POLYSACCHARIDES: CHEMISTRY, FUNCTIONS, PROPERTIES AND APPLICATIONS. COMPLEXITY OF POLYSACCHARIDES: FORMATION OF GLYCOSIDIC BOND. TECHNIQUES FOR SYNTHESIS, PURIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION. MODIFICATIONS OF MONO-, OLIGO- AND POLYSACCHARIDES. GLYCOCONJUGATES. DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS. GLYCOSAMINOGLYCANS: HYALURONIC ACID.
- LIPIDS: CLASSIFICATION OF LIPIDS. CHEMICAL PROPERTIES. TRIGLYCERIDES, PHOSPHOLIPIDS, SPHINGOLIPIDS, GLYCOLIPIDS, LIPOPROTEIN. LIPOSOMES AND MICELLES.

EXPERIENCES WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON THE CHARACTERIZATION AND ANALYSIS OF BIOMOLECULES, USING NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE TECHNIQUES (1H, 13C AND 31P NMR) AND GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY (ANALYSIS OF FATTY ACID MIXTURES).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE CONTEMPLATES LECTURES WITH SUPPORT OF ELECTRONIC PRESENTATIONS AND THE SOLVING OF RELEVANT PROBLEMS ON THE BLACKBOARD. ALL TEACHING MATERIALS WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS AT THE END OF EACH LESSON AS FILES IN PDF FORMAT.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM OCCURS EXCLUSIVELY THROUGH AN ORAL INTERVIEW ON THE
THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS AS
INDICATED IN THE COURSE PROGRAM. THE AIM IS TO ESTABLISH THE LEVEL OF
KNOWLEDGE AND CAPACITY OF
UNDERSTANDING REACHED BY THE STUDENT, AND TO VERIFY THE ABILITY OF
THE PRESENTATION USING THE
APPROPRIATE TERMINOLOGY.
