Objectives
LEARNING OF ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE ON THE LABORATORY SAFETY PROCEDURES AND RULES AND LABORATORY PRACTICE OF INORGANIC AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. ACQUISITION OF METHODOLOGIES FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF INORGANIC COMPOUNDS AND METHODS FOR ISOLATION AND PURIFICATION OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC COMPOUNDS.ACQUISITION BY THE STUDENT OF ADEQUATE KNOWLEDGE RELATIVE TO SAFETY, TO THE PRACTICE OF THE LABORATORY OF INORGANIC AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. LEARNING TECHNIQUES OF SYNTHESIS OF INORGANIC COMPOUNDS AND BASIC TECHNIQUES OF INSULATION AND PURIFICATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS.
THE TEACHINGS OF THE CHEMISTRY AREA PROVIDE THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF LABORATORY PRACTICE. IN PARTICULAR, THIS TEACHING ALLOWS: - THE LEARNING OF SYNTHESIS AND PURIFICATION TECHNIQUES OF INORGANIC AND ORGANIC COMPOUNDS, LEARNING OF CHEMICAL PROCESSES , THROUGH THE STUDY OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS AND THERMODYNAMIC AND KINETIC FOUNDATIONS.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND TO UNDERSTAND: THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO APPLY CHEMICAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD AND TO SOLVE SIMPLE ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS CONCERNING BOTH THE ANALYTICAL AND THE CHEMICAL RISK ASPECTS. IN PARTICULAR, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - UNDERSTAND THE CHEMICAL PROCESSES IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL SPHERE - CARRY OUT THE COMMON OPERATIONS THAT ARE TYPICALLY CARRIED OUT IN A CHEMICAL LABORATORY - ACHIEVE THE PREREQUISITES FOR PERFORMING QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE INSTRUMENTAL ANALYZES ON DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL MATRICES - ELABORATE AND DISCUSS THE RESULTS ACHIEVED.
Prerequisites
THE STUDENT MUST HAVE ACQUIRED THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF CHEMISTRY PROVIDED BY THE NORMAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDY PROGRAMS.
Contents
AFTER AN INTRODUCTORY PART CONCERNING THE CHEMICAL LABORATORY SAFETY ELEMENTS AND AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SAFETY REGULATIONS ON THE LABELING OF CHEMICAL REAGENTS (24 HOURS), CONCERNING THE PART OF THE LABORATORY OF CHEMISTRY RELATED TO GENERAL CHEMISTRY:

TUTORIALS: EXERCISES OF STOICHIOMETRY (12 HOURS)

LABORATORY PRACTICES:
DETERMINATION OF THE MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF A VOLATILE LIQUID.
SYNTHESIS OF SODIUM CARBONATE ACCORDING TO THE SOLVAY METHOD.
SYNTHESIS OF IRON OXIDES (II) AND IRON (III).

CONCERNING THE PART OF THE LABORATORY OF CHEMISTRY RELATED TO ORGANIC CHEMISTRY:

-TUTORIALS: EXERCISES ON SYSTEMATIC NOMENCLATURE, STRUCTURES, CHEMICAL-PHYSICS PROPERTIES BASIC PRINCIPLES OF REACTIVITY OF THE MOST COMMON CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS: ALKANES, ALKENES, ALKYNES, ALKYL HALIDES, ALCOHOLS, ALDEHYDES, KETONES, BENZENE AND DERIVATIVES, AMINES, CARBOXYLIC ACIDS AND DERIVATIVES. (12 HOURS)

LABORATORY PRACTICES:
CRYSTALLIZATION OF BENZOIC ACID (4 HOURS)
EXTRACTION AND CHROMATOGRAPHY OF PHOSOSYNTHETIC PIGMENTS OF CLOOPHILLA FROM SPINACH LEAVES.(4 HOURS)
EXTRACTION OF CAFFEINE FROM TEA LEAVES. (4 HOURS)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES 72 HOURS OF TEACHING BETWEEN THE LABORATORY AND TUTORIALS. IN PARTICULAR, THERE ARE 48 HOURS OF CLASSROOM EXERCISES AND LESSONS (4CFU) AND 24 HOURS OF GUIDED LABORATORY PRACTICES (4 CFUS).
THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED AS FOLLOWS:
STOICHIOMETRY AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY TUTORIALS AND LABORATORY SAFETY LESSONS WILL PRECEDE THE PRACTICAL PART IN THE LAB. STUDENTS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO GROUPS (MAXIMUM 3 STUDENTS/GROUP) AND WILL FOLLOW 6 GUIDED LABORATORY PRACTICES OF 4 HOURS EACH. AT THE END OF THE LABORATORY PRACTICES, STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO WRITE A REPORT ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE AND COMMENT ON THE RESULTS OBTAINED.
LABORATORY ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY WITH A MAXIMUM OF10% (1 EXPERIENCE) OF ABSENCE.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED BY PASSING AN EVALUATION EXAM WITH THE MAXIMUM FINAL NOTE IN 30/30. THE EXAM INVOLVES THE PREPARATION OF A DETAILED WRITTEN REPORT FOR EACH LABORATORY EXPERIENCE AND THE ORAL DISCUSSION OF THE BACKGROUND PRINCIPLES OF THE LABORATORY PRACTICE AND A DETAILED DISCUSSION OF THE RESULTS OBTAINED.THE HONORS WILL BE AWARDED TO THE STUDENT WHO WORKED SERIOUSLY AND FAULTLESS IN THE LABORATORY AND PRESENTS THE TOPICS COVERED FULLY, IN AN ERROR-FREE AND EXCELLENT WAY.
