Francesco SCHIAFFO Curriculum

Francesco Schiaffo graduated with honours in law from the University of Salerno in 1991 and went on to obtain a Ph.D in Criminal Justice from the University of Firenze in 1997. From 1991-1998, Francesco Schiaffo continued his studies at the Institut für die gesamten Strafrechtswissenschaften at the Ludwig Maximilian University in München (BRD).

He began his teaching career at the University of Salerno as a criminal law researcher (2000-2001), then went on to become associate professor (2001-2019). He taught criminology there from 2001-2002 then worked as a substitute professor at the University of Molise Law Faculty from 2002-2009. Since 2001 he has been responsible for the design of individual teaching modules at the School of Specialisation for Legal Professions at the University of Napoli, Federico II.

In 2019 he assumed the role as full professor of criminal law at the University of Salerno.

Francesco Schiaffo is a member of the editorial boards of various journals in the IUS/17 (Criminal Law) sector. Since 2014, he has been on the Doctoral Board for the Legal Science PhD course at the University of Salerno and has been co-supervisor for several doctoral theses under international co-tutorship agreements with various European universities including:

•Universidad de Salamanca for a doctoral thesis on ""Criminal law of the enemy: analysis of a political-criminal model" discussed in 2017
•Universidad de Málaga for a doctoral thesis on "Forensic psychiatric hospitals: possible importation of the REMS model developed in Italy" (still in progress)

Francesco Schiaffo has both headed and been a team member of numerous research projects funded by the University of Salerno, as well as part of the working groups of various national and international research projects including:

•Five-year inter-university project funded by the C.N.R.: "The moving frontier of penalties in social control systems in the second half of the twentieth century" (1996-2000)
•PRIN 2005: "Criminal and extra-criminal policies against organised crime: an impact assessment from the perspective of European harmonisation" (Jan.30, 2006 - Jan.30, 2008)
•PRIN 2007: 'The reform of the penal code in Italy. The general part” (Nov. 1, 2008 – Nov.1, 2010)
•PRIN 2017 on "The Dark Side of the Law: When discrimination, exclusion and oppression are by law (still ongoing)

From 2012-2013, Francesco Schiaffo was guest professor at the Institut für die gesamten Strafrechtswissenschaften of the Ludwig Maximilian Universität of München (BRD) as part of a research project entitled “Ontologismus und Normativismus in der Methodenlehre der Strafrechtswissenschaft" funded by the University of Salerno as part of the 2010 international mobility program (D.R. 1209/2012, leave ex D.R. 2551/2012).

In the academic years 2012/2013 and 2018/2019, as part of the international mobility programme at the University of Salerno, Department of Legal Sciences, Francesco Schiaffo organized visiting professor status for Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Eugenio Raúl Zaffaroni, Emeritus of Criminal Law and Criminology at the University of Buenos Aires, then Minister of Corte Suprema de Justicia de la Nación Argentina (2003-2014) and judge on the Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (2016-2022).

In 2014 proposed the convention framework between the University of Salerno and the “Conferenza Permanente per la Salute Mentale nel Mondo” (Co.Per.Sa.M.M. - ConfBasaglia), acting as university representative (2014-2020)

Francesco Schiaffo was the recipient of the 1999 Scanno Award for his Debut Work in the Legal category entitled Le situazioni ‘quasi scriminanti’ nella sistematica teleologica del reato. Contributo ad uno studio sulla definizione di struttura e limiti della giustificazione (Jovene Editore – Napoli,1998).
