PREDICTED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND SKILLS TO ACQUIRE. THE COURSE AIMS AT LEARNING THE VARIOUS ISSUES INVOLVED IN DESIGNING STEEL CONSTRUCTIONS BY PROVIDING ADEQUATE EXPERTISE IN PROJECT DESIGN AND CHECKING JOINTS AND MEMBERS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRUCTURAL TYPOLOGIES OF STEEL CONSTRUCTIONS, THE BEHAVIOR AND CHECKING OF THE MEMBERS, THE BEHAVIOR AND METHODS OF ANALYSIS AND CHECKING OF WELDED AND BOLTED CONNECTIONS ACCORDING TO ITALIAN AND EUROPEAN CODES, THE SEISMIC DESIGN PRINCIPLES OF BRACED AND UNBRACED STEEL FRAMES. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. STUDENTS WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THIS COURSE WILL BE ABLE TO: 1. IDENTIFY AND COMPUTE THE DESIGN LOADS ON A TYPICAL STEEL BUILDING. 2. IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENT FAILURE MODES OF STEEL TENSION AND COMPRESSION MEMBERS AND BEAMS, AND COMPUTE THEIR DESIGN STRENGTHS. 3. SELECT THE MOST SUITABLE SECTION SHAPE AND SIZE FOR TENSION AND COMPRESSION MEMBERS AND BEAMS ACCORDING TO SPECIFIC DESIGN CRITERIA. 4. IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENT FAILURE MODES OF BOLTED AND WELDED CONNECTIONS, AND DETERMINE THEIR DESIGN STRENGTHS. 5. DESIGN BOLTED AND WELDED CONNECTIONS FOR TENSION AND COMP. MEMBERS AND BEAMS. 6. APPLY RELEVANT CODE PROVISIONS TO ENSURE SAFETY AND SERVICEABILITY OF STRUCTURAL STEEL ELEMENTS. 7. UTILIZE ADVANCED COMPUTER SOFTWARE PACKAGES FOR THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES. MAKING JUDGEMENTS. TO BE ABLE TO KNOW HOW TO OPTIMIZE THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF JOINTS AND MEMBERS AND TO CRITICALLY EXAMINE THE RESULTS OF THE STRUCTURAL ANALYZES BY CHECKING THE CORRECTNESS OF THE ANALYSIS THROUGH ELEMENTARY MODELS. COMMUNICATION SKILLS. ABILITY TO WORK IN A TEAM AND TO TAKE AN ORAL PRESENTATION ON STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS RELATED TO STEEL CONSTRUCTION ANALYSIS WITH REFERENCE TO THE STRUCTURAL MODELING OF CONNECTIONS AND MEMBERS. LEARNING SKILLS. THE STUDENT HAS TO KNOW HOW TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED IN STRUCTURAL SITUATIONS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE EXAMINED IN THE COURSE WITH REFERENCE TO THE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE MEMBERS AND THE OVERALL STRUCTURAL SCHEME. |
