Objectives
THE TEACHING MODULE AIMS TO PROVIDE:
- THE TECHNOLOGICAL AND APPLICATION ELEMENTS FOR THE DESIGN OF INVESTIGATIONS AND MONITORING SYSTEMS GEOTECHNICAL AND FOR THE ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF MEASUREMENT DATA;
- THE BASIS FOR THE DESIGN AND VERIFICATION OF REINFORCED CONCRETE (RC) ELEMENTS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL:
- KNOW THE THEORETICAL ELEMENTS UNDERLYING THE CHOICE AND OPERATION OF INSTRUMENTS FOR THE EXECUTION OF LITHOSTRATIGRAPHIC INVESTIGATIONS AND THE MEASUREMENT OF THE WATER CONTENT OF THE SOIL, FOR THE MONITORING OF LAND MOVEMENTS AND THE STRUCTURES/INFRASTRUCTURES INTERACTING WITH IT, OF CONTROL TECHNIQUES FOR SIMPLE GEOTECHNICAL SYSTEMS DURING EXECUTION AND OPERATION;
- LEARN HOW TO CHOOSE MATERIALS, DESIGN THE SECTION AND REINFORCEMENTS AND VERIFY SIMPLE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS IN REINFORCED CONCRETE WITHIN THE LOAD AND RESISTANCE FACTOR DESIGN (LRFD).

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- ANALYZE A SPECIFIC CIVIL/GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING PROBLEM IN ORDER TO FINE-TUNE THE MOST SUITABLE INVESTIGATION AND/OR CONTROL PLAN;
- UNDERSTAND THE ASSUMPTIONS BEHIND THE DESIGN OF SIMPLE RC ELEMENTS.

AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CRITICALLY EXAMINE:
- LIMITS AND POTENTIAL OF INVESTIGATION AND MONITORING TECHNIQUES;
- ASSUMPTIONS AND RESULTS OF THE DESIGN AND VERIFICATION OF SIMPLE RC ELEMENTS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- WORK IN GROUPS AND ORALLY PRESENT GEOTECHNICAL AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING TOPICS.
- REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE, THROUGH TEXTS OR VIRTUAL TOOLS, THE RESULTS OF THEIR WORK.

LEARNING ABILITY
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND IT RESOURCES FOR ANALYSIS AND ANALYSIS ARCHIVING;
- APPLY TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE TO CASE STUDIES, ENHANCING THE METHODOLOGIES ACQUIRED FOR THE ALSO CHOICE OF INSTRUMENTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE COVERED DURING THE COURSE;
- PROCEED WITH THE CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF KNOWLEDGE BASED ON THE AVAILABLE TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS AND MECHANICS OF SOILS AND STRUCTURES.
Contents
MODULE 1:
- IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF SOILS. STRESS STATE IN SATURATED POROUS MEDIA;
- SITE INVESTIGATIONS FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE STRATIGRAPHIC PROFILE;
- IN-SITU TESTS FOR THE HYDRO-MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SOILS;
- ELEMENTS OF GEOTECHNICAL MONITORING.
MODULE 2:
- INTRODUCTION TO THE DESIGN OF RC MEMBERS;
- DESIGN OF MEMBERS IN BENDING;
- INSIGHTS INTO THE DESIGN OF MEMBERS SUBJECTED TO AXIAL FORCES AND BENDING MOMENTS;
- STRUCTURAL DETAILINGS.
Teaching Methods
TEACHING ACTIVITIES CONSIST OF THEORETICAL LESSONS AND EXERCISES. THE EXERCISES DEAL WITH THE APPLICATION OF THE STUDIED TOPICS.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE EXPECTED KNOWLEGE IS MADE THROUGH AN ORAL EXAM. THE STUDENT WILL BE ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT:
- MODULE 1:
A) PRINCIPLES UNDERLYING THE IDENTIFICATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF SOILS AND CALCULATION OF THE GEOSTATIC STRESS STATE;
B) METHODS FOR THE DEFINITION OF THE GEOLOGICAL AND GEOTECHNICAL SUBSOIL MODEL;
C) MONITORING TECHNIQUES.
- MODULE 2:
A) THE ASSUMPTIONS BEHIND THE DESIGN OF RC MEMBERS;
B) FUNDAMENTALS ABOUT THE DESIGN OF MEMBERS IN SIMPLE AND COMPOSED BENDING;
C) DISCUSSION ABOUT STRUCTURAL DETAILING.
THE EVALUATION WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT HOW THE STUDENT IS ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE COMPLETE AUTONOMY IN THE EVALUATION AND CHOICE OF MATERIALS IN RELATION TO SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS. LANGUAGE PROPERTY AND EXPOSURE SKILLS WILL BE CONSIDERED TO AWARD THE EXCELLENCE MARK.
