GENERAL OBJECTIVE THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE A BROAD KNOWLEDGE OF SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES CONCERNING THE DIGITAL ECONOMY, AS WELL AS THE ESSENTIAL THEORETICAL TOOLS FOR UNDERSTANDING THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF WORK IN THIS CONTEXT. YOU WILL FOCUS ON THE NEW ORGANISATIONAL FORMS OF DIGITAL WORK, ANALYSING THE FUNCTIONING OF THE SPECIFIC LABOUR MARKET AND IDENTIFYING THE CRITICAL ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH IT. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING STUDENTS WILL - KNOW THE DISCIPLINARY FOUNDATIONS OF SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES ON THE DIGITAL ECONOMY, INCLUDING THE MAIN CURRENTS OF THOUGHT AND THEIR HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENTS. - WILL UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN LABOUR TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY AND CHANGES IN ORGANISATIONAL MODELS, ANALYSING HOW NEW TECHNOLOGIES INFLUENCE THE STRUCTURE AND DYNAMICS OF THE LABOUR MARKET. - WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND ANALYSE NEW FORMS OF EMPLOYMENT IN THE DIGITAL CONTEXT, UNDERSTANDING THEIR CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR WORKERS. - WILL HAVE AN IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE CRITICAL ISSUES RELATED TO WORKING IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY, INCLUDING PROBLEMS SUCH AS PRECARIOUSNESS, FLEXIBILITY AND JOB SECURITY. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING THE TEACHING INVOLVES THE USE OF EMPIRICAL RESEARCH THAT INVESTIGATES DIGITAL LABOUR IN ITS GLOBAL CONNECTIONS, ALSO LOOKING AT RECENT ATTEMPTS TO (SELF-)ORGANISE THE WORKERS MOST AT RISK OF PRECARIOUSNESS AND EXPLOITATION. STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE THE ABILITY TO ANALYSE LABOUR TRANSFORMATIONS AND LABOUR MARKET TRENDS IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY USING THEORETICAL TOOLS AND APPLIED RESEARCH EXAMPLES. AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT AT THE END OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE MAIN SOCIO-ECONOMIC MECHANISMS THAT CHARACTERISE THE DIGITAL ECONOMY AND WORK IN THIS SECTOR. THEY WILL HAVE LEARNT THE THEORETICAL TOOLS FOR INTERPRETING THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF WORK IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY, THE ORGANISATIONAL PROCESSES AND THE ORGANISATIONAL AND WORK-RELATED PROBLEMS THAT CHARACTERISE THIS SPECIFIC SECTOR, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF DIGITAL WORKERS AND THEIR CAPACITY FOR SUBJECTIVATION AND SELF-ORGANISATION. COMMUNICATION SKILLS STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE ABILITY TO ARGUE THEIR INTERPRETATIONS OF ORGANISATIONAL AND LABOUR PHENOMENA AND TO IDENTIFY PROBLEMS AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS RELATING TO LABOUR RELATIONS, RIGHTS AND LABOUR REGULATION. LEARNING SKILLS STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO - USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS AND IT RESOURCES EFFECTIVELY FOR SEARCHING, ANALYSING AND ARCHIVING RELEVANT INFORMATION. - CONDUCT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AUTONOMOUSLY, DEMONSTRATING THE ABILITY TO IDENTIFY RELEVANT SOURCES, EVALUATE THEM CRITICALLY AND SYNTHESISE THE INFORMATION OBTAINED IN A CLEAR AND COHERENT MANNER. - DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY, BOTH IN WRITTEN AND VERBAL FORM, USING LANGUAGE THAT IS CLEAR AND APPROPRIATE TO THE CONTEXT AND TARGET AUDIENCE. |

STUDENTS SHOULD ALREADY HAVE STRENGTHENED KNOWLEDGE IN GENERAL SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES, IN ECONOMIC, LABOUR AND ORGANISATIONAL SOCIOLOGY, IN KNOWLEDGE AND WEB ECONOMY, IN THE SOCIOLOGY OF INNOVATION, AND IN ADVANCED METHODOLOGY OF SOCIAL RESEARCH. GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH IS RECOMMENDED SINCE SEVERAL TEXTS USED DURING THE COURSE COME FROM THE INTERNATIONAL LITERATURE AND ARE IN ENGLISH. |

THE LESSONS COMBINE THEORETICAL SESSIONS AND PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES. DURING THE THEORETICAL LECTURES, THE MAIN CONCEPTS, THEORIES AND RESEARCH IN THE FIELD OF SOCIOLOGY OF WORK AND DIGITAL PLATFORMS WILL BE PRESENTED. THESE SESSIONS WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A SOLID BASIS FOR AN IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL DYNAMICS THAT CHARACTERISE THE CONTEMPORARY LABOUR MARKET. THE PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES, ON THE OTHER HAND, WILL OFFER STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY THE CONCEPTS LEARNED DURING THE THEORETICAL LECTURES TO CONCRETE CASES AND CASE STUDIES. THROUGH EXERCISES, GROUP DISCUSSIONS, DATA ANALYSIS AND SIMULATIONS, STUDENTS WILL BE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THE LEARNING PROCESS, DEVELOPING CRITICAL COMPETENCES AND ANALYTICAL SKILLS APPLIED TO THE CONTEXT OF DIGITAL PLATFORMS AND WORK. |

THE LEARNING PROCESS WILL BE VERIFIED WITH AN ORAL EXAM CONCERNING THE SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES ON LABOR IN THE PLATFORM ECONOMY AND THE ABILITY TO DEVELOP A CRITICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THIS ISSUE.IT IS POSSIBLE THE PRESENTATION OF PAPERS BY STUDENTS, TO BE SUBMITTED FOR FINAL EVALUATION AND WHICH WILL CONTRIBUTE TO THE DETERMINATION OF THE FINAL GRADE. PARTICIPATION IN EXERCISES (WITH GRADING) OR SEMINAR ACTIVITIES THAT GENERATE EXEMPTION FROM PART OF THE EXAMINATION PROGRAM IS OPTIONAL. THE EVALUATION OF STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE IS BASED ON THEIR CAPABILITY TO AUTONOMOUSLY ELABORATE THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS ILLUSTRATED DURING THE COURSE OR THROUGH TEXTS READING, ON THEIR ABILITY TO COMPARE DIFFERENT THEORIES, AND TO ELABORATE AUTONOMOUS ANALYSIS ON PLATFORM CASE STUDIES.
