EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND COMPETENCES TO BE ACQUIRED LEARNING THE CRITERIA FOR SOLVING - AT LARGE AND DETAILED SCALES - COMPLEX PROBLEMS IN MULTI-RISK CONTEXTS, SUCH AS THOSE CONCERNING THE SIZING OF WORKS AND INTERVENTIONS FOR FLOOD OR RAINFALL-INDUCED LANDSLIDE RISK MITIGATION. KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS: ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THE ISSUES CHARACTERISING MULTI-RISK CONTEXTS AND THE MOST APPROPRIATE TYPES OF MITIGATION WORKS AND INTERVENTIONS. UNDERSTANDING OF THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES TO BE ADOPTED TO ADDRESS AND SOLVE THE AFOREMENTIONED PROBLEMS, IN BOTH DETERMINISTIC AND PROBABILISTIC FIELDS. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: APPLICATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED FOR THE CORRECT DESIGN OF WORKS AND MITIGATION INTERVENTIONS IN MULTI-RISK CONTEXTS, THROUGH THE VERIFICATION OF THE EXISTENCE OF ACCEPTABLE SAFETY MARGINS WITH REGARD TO ALL POSSIBLE LIMIT STATES TO BE PERFORMED WITH THE AID OF INNOVATIVE MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES AND IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REGULATIONS IN FORCE. ABILITY TO RETURN THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN TECHNICAL REPORTS AND GRAPHICAL WORKS. AUTONOMY OF JUDGEMENT: ABILITY TO DISCERN THE MOST SUITABLE METHODS AND MODELS FOR THE DIFFERENT SCENARIOS THAT MAY OCCUR IN AN ASSIGNED MULTI-RISK CONTEXT AND TO VERIFY - ON A QUANTITATIVE BASIS - THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE WORKS OR MITIGATION INTERVENTIONS DIMENSIONED THEREIN. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: ABILITY TO WORK IN GROUPS AND TO EXPOUND, WITH APPROPRIATE TECHNICAL LANGUAGE AND WITH ADEQUATE GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION, ARGUMENTS INHERENT TO THE ANALYSIS AND RESOLUTION OF PROBLEMS IN MULTI-RISK CONTEXTS, ALSO INTEGRATING THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED WITH THAT OF OTHER DISCIPLINES. ABILITY TO LEARN: CONSOLIDATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED SO AS TO APPLY THEM TO SITUATIONS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE DEALT WITH DURING THE COURSE AND IN-DEPTH STUDY OF THE TOPICS DEALT WITH BY MEANS OF ANALYSIS TOOLS DIFFERENT FROM OR COMPLEMENTARY TO THOSE EXPOUNDED. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
THE DESIGN LABORATORY ASSUMES KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS CONCERNING THE ANALYSIS, EVALUATION AND MITIGATION OF RISKS OF NATURAL ORIGIN AND THAT THE STUDENT KNOWS HOW TO PERFORM NUMERICAL ANALYSES. |

METHODS (HEURISTIC, EMPIRICAL/STATISTICAL, DETERMINISTIC/PROBABILISTIC) FOR THE ANALYSIS OF A MULTI-RISK CONTEXT ACCORDING TO MULTI-SCALAR AND MULTI-DISCIPLINARY APPROACHES; CASE STUDIES (6 HOURS LECTURE). CATEGORIES OF INTERVENTIONS FOR THE MITIGATION OF NATURAL RISK; CASE STUDIES (6 HOURS LECTURE). CRITERIA FOR CHOOSING AND DESIGN INTERVENTIONS (6 HOURS LECTURE). VERIFICATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERVENTIONS AND THE CONCEPT OF RESIDUAL RISK; CURRENT REGULATIONS (6 HOURS LECTURE). MONITORING AND CONTROLS IN OPERATION; CASE STUDIES (6 HOURS LECTURE). PRACTICAL ACTIVITY CONCERNING RISK MITIGATION IN LOWLAND AREAS WITH REFERENCE TO A REAL CASE: QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS AND GRAPHIC RESTITUTION OF THE RESULTS; PREPARATION OF MAPS AND DRAFTING OF THE FINAL REPORT (30 HOURS). PRACTICAL ACTIVITY CONCERNING RISK MITIGATION IN SLOPE AREAS WITH REFERENCE TO A REAL CASE: QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS AND GRAPHIC RESTITUTION OF RESULTS; PREPARATION OF MAPS AND DRAFTING OF THE FINAL REPORT (30 HOURS). |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE DESIGN LABORATORY INCLUDES THEORETICAL LECTURES (30 CFU) AND PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES (60 CFU) IN THE CLASSROOM. THE PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE THE DEVELOPMENT OF MAPS AND REPORTS RELATED TO REAL CASES IN WHICH RISK MITIGATION IS REQUIRED ACCORDING TO MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACHES. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE SET OBJECTIVES WILL TAKE PLACE THROUGH AN ORAL EXAM SCHEDULED AT THE END OF THE DESIGN LABORATORY. THIS ORAL EXAM (LASTING APPROXIMATELY FORTY MINUTES) NORMALLY INCLUDES A DISCUSSION (LASTING APPROXIMATELY TWENTY MINUTES) ON THE CONTENTS OF THE MAPS AND REPORTS PRODUCED WITH REFERENCE TO THE PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES AND A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS ON THE THEORETICAL-APPLICATIVE ASPECTS DEALT WITH DURING THE DESIGN LABORATORY. THE PURPOSE OF THE INTERVIEW IS TO VERIFY - ON THE BASIS OF THE PERTINENCE AND EXHAUSTIVENESS OF THE ANSWERS GIVEN - THE LEVEL OF IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE, THE ABILITY TO CONNECT THE TOPICS, AND THE STUDENT'S QUALITIES OF CLARITY AND CRITICAL SYNTHESIS. FULL SATISFACTION OF ALL THE ABOVE-MENTIONED REQUIREMENTS WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FOR THE PURPOSES OF HONOURS. |
