Objectives
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
THE COURSE HAS THE PRIMARY AIM OF PROVIDING THE BASIC NOTIONS OF MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS. IT ALSO AIMS TO ILLUSTRATE HOW TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN THE ANALYSIS OF REAL DATA. FOR THIS PURPOSE, THE R STATISTICAL SOFTWARE IS INTRODUCED AND USED, TOGETHER WITH PROGRAMMING NOTIONS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL KNOW THE MAIN TOPICS OF MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS SUCH AS DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS, POINT AND INTERVAL ESTIMATION, HYPOTHESIS TESTING AND REGRESSION, FUNDAMENTALS OF THE STATISTICAL SOFTWARE R.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- IDENTIFY A STATISTICAL MODEL AND UNDERSTAND ITS MAIN CHARACTERISTICS;
- RECOGNIZE THE TOOLS OF DESCRIPTIVE AND INFERENTIAL STATISTICS SUITABLE FOR SOLVING A PROBLEM;
- CONSTRUCT APPROPRIATE HYPOTHESIS TESTS TO VERIFY HYPOTHESES ON MEANS OR VARIANCES AND ANALYZE THE RESULTS OBTAINED;
- ANALYZE BIVARIATE DATA USING REGRESSION TOOLS;
- SELECT PREDICTORS IN A REGRESSION MODEL;
- USE THE R LANGUAGE TO APPLY THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE IN DATA ANALYSIS.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE
- TO EVALUATE THE COHERENCE OF THE LOGICAL REASONING USED IN A PROOF;
- TO IDENTIFY AN EFFECTIVE PATH IN SOLVING A PROBLEM;
- TO RECOGNIZE ANY ANOMALOUS ELEMENTS PRESENT IN THE EXPERIMENTAL DATA.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE
- TO COMMUNICATE THE INFORMATION OBTAINED FROM THE ANALYSIS OF A PROBLEM USING APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY;
- TO REPRESENT THE RESULTS OF THE DATA ANALYSIS THROUGH TABLES AND GRAPHIC PROCESSING;
- TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM THE APPLICATION OF STATISTICAL PROCEDURES.

LEARNING ABILITY:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE
- TO INDEPENDENTLY DEEPEN FURTHER SKILLS WITH REFERENCE TO THE CONSULTATION OF BIBLIOGRAPHIC MATERIAL, DATABASES AND OTHER ONLINE INFORMATION;
- TO PROCEED WITH THE CONTINUOUS UPDATING OF ONE'S KNOWLEDGE BY STUDYING THE DOCUMENTATION OF STATISTICAL PACKAGES DEVELOPED BY THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY IN THE R (OPEN SOURCE) ENVIRONMENT.
Prerequisites
STUDENTS MUST HAVE ACQUIRED THE ABILITY TO DEVELOP LOGICAL-MATHEMATICAL REASONING, BASED ON NOTIONS OF PROBABILITY THEORY.
Contents
- (18 hours) STATISTICAL INFERENCE. SAMPLING. DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS. SPECIAL DISTRIBUTIONS. ORDER STATISTICS. ESTIMATORS. SUFFICIENT STATISTICS. MAXIMUM LIKELIHOOD ESTIMATORS. METHOD OF MOMENTS. BAYES ESTIMATORS.

- (4 hours) HISTOGRAMS. FREQUENCY DIAGRAMS. USE OF STATISTICAL SOFTWARE R

- (8 hours) CONFIDENCE INTERVALS. QUANTILE ESTIMATION.

- (12 hours) STATISTICAL HYPOTHESES. CHI-SQUARE TEST. T-TEST.

- (6 hours) REGRESSION AND CORRELATION. NON-LINEAR REGRESSION. NORMAL CORRELATION.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES (38 hours) AND LABORATORY (10 hours) ACTIVITIES.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM TEST IS AIMED AT ASSESSING AS A WHOLE THE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS PRESENTED IN LESSONS, AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO APPLY SUCH KNOWLEDGE IN THE DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA TAKEN FROM RANDOM PHENOMENA, IN THE SCHEMATIZING AND RESOLUTION OF PROBLEMS SUBJECT TO RANDOM USING MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS TOOLS.

THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL INTERVIEW (AIMED AT ASSESSING THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE DISCIPLINE) AND IN THE DISCUSSION OF A WRITTEN PROJECT RELATING TO A STATISTICAL INVESTIGATION (AIMED AT ASSESSING THE ABILITY TO SOLVE PROBLEMS USING STATISTICAL METHODS).
THE PROJECT IS ASSIGNED UPON REQUEST OF THE STUDENT 15 DAYS BEFORE THE EXAM DATE, AND IS DISCUSSED AT THE SAME TIME AS THE ORAL INTERVIEW.

THE OVERALL MARK IS BASED ON THE EVALUATION OF THE ORAL INTERVIEW (WITH A WEIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 75% ON THE EVALUATION) AND ON THE DISCUSSION OF THE PAPER (WITH A WEIGHT OF APPROXIMATELY 25% ON THE EVALUATION).

PRAISE IS AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHO SHOW THAT THEY HAVE ACQUIRED SOLID SKILLS AND HIGH ABILITY IN DEALING WITH THE TOPICS COVERED.
