Fausto LONGO Curriculum

Fausto Longo is associate professor of Archaeology and History of Greek and Roman art at the Dipartimento di Scienze del Patrimonio Culturale of the University of Salerno. He teaches a course in Archaeology and History of Greek and Roman Art in the undergraduate program, and a Master’s degree course in the Specializzazione in Beni Archeologici program. Since 2013 he is a Research Associate of the CNR-IBAM in Catania.

He is member of the teaching staff of the PhD program “Methods and Methodologies of Archaeological and Art Historical Research” and Director of the Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Archeologici of the University of Salerno, where he teaches Greek Archaeology.

A university department delegate (DISPAC – Università di Salerno) for internationalization, he leads investigations in Italy (at Paestum) and abroad (at Phaistos in Crete). He is the co-director of the Phaistos Project, an Italo-Greek survey and excavation mission.

He is the author of books and essays on the topography of the Greek world (Poseidonia-Paestum, Miletus, Neapolis, Athens and the Piraeus, Phaistos) and bronze production in southern Italy (Paestum).

He has been and is a member of several heritage protection and promotion projects (Progetto INNOVA, Piano della conoscenza di Pompei, Progetto Sibilla, Progetto Databenc, and exhibition and promotion projects regarding the sites of Paestum and Phaistos), with tasks including monitoring, exhibition consultancy, and scientific writing for the general public.

Education and other experiences:

Graduated at the University of Salerno (1991). Specialization in Archaeology at the University of Lecce (1995). PhD at the University of Naples 'Federico II' (1999). Postdoc at the Università degli Studi di Napoli ‘Orientale’ (2001).

Post-graduate degree in Classical Archaeology at the SAIA - Italian Archaeological School of Athens (2000).

Completed study periods, as part of his PhD program, at Eberhard-Karls-Universität in Tübingen, Germany (1997) and the University of Paris X (1998). Was awarded scholarships in Greece at the Aristotelio Panepistimio Thessaloniki (1993) and the Ecole française d'Athènes (1999).

In February 2013, will be Visiting Professor at the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne.

From April to August 2013, will be visiting at the French School in Athens as part of an international mobility program.

In February / March 2017, was granted Erasmus-Traineeship mobility for professors at the Roemisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum in Mainz.

Research, organizational and teaching work:

From 2000 to 2005, he collaborated with the Italian Archaeological School of Athens, where in 2005-2007 he was a tutor at the School of Specialization in Archaeology.

From 2004 to 2009, he was a member of the editorial board of the journal WAC (Workshop for Classical Archaeology), directed by Emanuele Greco and Andrea Carandini.

Since 2000, he has been on the editorial board of Tekmeria, directed by Emanuele Greco and has now (2017) become a member of the editorial board of the series Argonautika of the Archaeological Museum of Paestum.

Since 2003, he has been a member of the research project on the Topography of Athens directed by Emanuele Greco and coordinator of the series SATAA - Studi di Archeologia e Topografia di Atene e dell'Attica.

Since 2008, he had been on the editorial board of Ergasteria (DISPAC – University of Salerno), directed by Angela Pontrandolfo.

He was a consultant for several exhibitions, namely, 'Poseidonia and the Lucani' organized by the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Salerno; 'I Greci in Occidentè (Paestum 1996); 'Accumulare Denari: in un tesoro di Paestum due secoli di storià (Paestum 1999), the section 'Allo Sport l'omaggio dell'Arte', curated by BIMED, in the exhibition 'I Giochi e la Storià (Giffoni Valle Piana - Salerno 2001), and the section 'L'ideale atletico tra Greci e Indigeni', curated by the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Salerno in the exhibition 'Lo Sport nell'Italia Anticà (Paestum 2002). He is currently organizing - with the director of the Archaeological Museum of Paestum and Raimon Graels (RGZM) - an exhibition at the Archaeological Museum in Paestum, entitled ‘Le armi di Atena - Il santuario settentrionale di Paestum’ (25/11/2017-30/06/2018).

He wrote the texts for the audio guide of the National Archaeological Museum of Paestum, and wrote the texts and provided scientific advice for the multimedia CD Painted Tombs of Paestum (Rome 2002) and the DVD Paestum Interactive, by E. Greco and F. Antinucci (Paestum 2004).

Excavations:

He has carried out excavations and archaeological surveys in Italy (Fratte, Buccino, Vasto, Otranto, Paestum), Turkey (Hierapolis of Phrygia) and Greece (Achaia, Lemnos, Crete).

For several years, he has been conducting archaeological research in Italy and Greece, in collaboration with the 'Mario Napoli' Laboratory of Archaeology directed by Angela Pontrandolfo and the directing office of the excavations and museum in Achaia (Peloponnese), notably at Paestum, Athens and Phaistos.

Since 2007 he has been codirecting, in collaboration with the Italian Archaeological School of Athens and the Eforia Heraklion, the Phaistos Project, a research project investigating the surface and territory of the ancient city of Phaistos.

Other activities:

Since 2006, he has been on the Board of Directors of the Fondazione Paestum - Centro di Studi sui Movimenti Coloniali nel Mediterraneo, where, since 1996, he has been in charge of coordinating scientific activities and publications.

In 2007-2009, he participated in a PRIN Program coordinated by prof. Giuseppe Sassatelli (University of Bologna) and prof. Luca Cerchiai (University of Salerno – local coordinator): Etruschi e Greci in area campana. Rituale funerario ed ideologia della morte tra VI e V sec. a.C. a Pontecagnano e Poseidonia/Paestum.

In 2002-2007, he partecipated in the Achaia Project. Survey and research in the northern Peloponnese, directed by Prof Angela Pontrandolfo (University of Salerno) in collaboration with the Eforia of Patrasso and the Italian Archaeological School in Athens.

In 2003-2005 - with other teachers of the Department of Cultural Heritage at the University of Salerno – he collaborated in the activities of the Regional Centre of Expertise INNOVA for the development and transfer of innovation applied to cultural and environmental heritage; notably, he collaborated with specialists in the field to conduct a metallographic analysis of some bronze findings from the sanctuary north of Paestum.

In 2003-2006 he collaborated in the project Scavo, restauro e valorizzazione del tratto di mura orientale e nord-orientale di Paestum, directed by prof. Angela Pontrandolfo and Dr. Marina Cipriani (Archaeological Museum of Paestum).

In 2012-2015, he collaborated in the Fondazione Paestum Project Scavo, restauro e valorizzazione del tratto di mura sud-orientali di Poseidonia-Paestum, coordinated by prof. Emanuele Greco.

In 2013-2016 he participated in the PRIN Program La città etrusca e il sacro. Santuari e istituzioni politiche, coordinated by prof. Giuseppe Sassatelli (University of Bologna) and by prof. Angela Pontrandolfo (University of Salerno- local coordinator).

In 2014-2018 he collaborated – with other teachers of the Department of Cultural Heritage at the University of Salerno – in the activities of the DATABENC (Distretto ad Alta Tecnologia dei beni archeologici) and particularly in the SNECS Project (Social Network delle Entità dei Centri Storici) for the collection and transmission of scientific knowledge of an artistic, archaeological, literary, and historical-philosophical nature on the territory of Campania.

In 2015-2016, he participated in the ‘Grande Progetto Pompei’, along with other teachers of the Department of Cultural Heritage at the University of Salerno.

Since 2017, he collaborates – with other teachers of the Department of Cultural Heritage at the University of Salerno – in the activities of SIBILLA (PON H2020) Project, an Integrated Cloud-Based System for the Protection and Promotion of Cultural Heritage.

In collaboration with the Paestum Archaeological Park and the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum in Mainz, he had organizied the international conference “Votive weapons in Magna Graecia” (23-25 November 2017).

He is a referee for archeology research journals and has held numerous lectures at universities and participated in PhD examination boards in Italy and abroad;
