COURSE INTRODUCTION:CLARIFICATIONS ON THE TERMS (PREVENTION, MAINTENANCE, CONSERVATION, BUILDING RECOVERY, ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION); GENERAL PROBLEMS. THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE BUILDING: MASONRY BUILDINGS, CONCRETE FRAMED BUILDINGS DATING BACK TO THE FIRST DECADES OF THE 20TH CENTURY, BUILDING FINISHING ELEMENTS. AGEING AND DECAY: GENERAL CAUSES OF DECAY, MECHANISMS OF DECAY, DECAY OF MATERIALS, STRUCTURAL DECAY, DIAGNOSIS. DIAGNOSTIC: DECAY SURVEY AND ANALYSIS, DESTRUCTIVE AND NON-DESTRUCTIVE DIAGNOSTIC, CRACK PATTERNS AND MOISTURE PATTERNS. PRESERVATION TECHNIQUES: PRESERVATION FOR BUILDING MATERIAL AND ELEMENTS, MOISTURE RECOVERY. STRENGTHENING TECHNIQUES: GUIDELINES FOR SEISMIC RISK ASSESSMENT AND MITIGATION, STRENGTHENING OF MASONRY STRUCTURES, STRENGTHENING OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES. THEORETICAL ORIENTATIONS: GUIDING PRINCIPLES ON RESTORATION; METHODOLOGY AND PRACTICE. PROTECTION AND LEGISLATION: CHARTERS, RECOMMENDATIONS, CONVENTIONS AND INTERNATIONAL DECLARATIONS, NATIONAL AND REGIONAL LAWS. GUIDED VISITS: CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF EMBLEMATIC MONUMENTAL BUILDINGS; THE RESTORATION DESIGN: THE CHOICE OF PROPER METHODS AND TECHNIQUES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RESTORATION PROJECT FOR AN EXISTING BUILDING. |

THE COURSE COVERS LECTURES, CLASSROOM PRACTICALS, AND GUIDED VISITS. LECTURES LEAD TO THE ACQUISITION OF THE METHODOLOGICAL, CRITICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS AIMED AT THE ELABORATION OF THE PROPER RESTORATION FOR TRADITIONAL OR MODERN EXISTING BUILDINGS. PRACTICALS INVOLVE THE ASSIGNMENT OF DESIGN THEMES THAT STUDENTS, DIVIDED INTO WORK TEAMS, ARE REQUIRED TO DEVELOP THROUGH THE ELABORATION OF TECHNICAL REPORTS AND GRAPHICS. THE THEME INCLUDES THE WHOLE COURSE CONTENT, AND IT CONSISTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A RESTORATION PROJECT PROVIDING THE PRESERVATION OF BUILDING ELEMENTS THROUGH A PROPER INTERVENTION PLANNING. GUIDED VISITS ALLOW TO CRITICALLY EXAMINE THE RESTORATION OF EMBLEMATIC MONUMENTAL BUILDINGS. |
