Objectives
LEARNING OUTCOMES AND SKILLS TO ACQUIRE
LEARNING METHODS AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE FOR THE PROJECT OF RECOVERY AND CONSERVATION OF EXISTING HERITAGE, THROUGH THE CORRECT SETTING OF DESIGN GOALS, RESEARCHING KNOWLEDGE DATA AND THEIR ELABORATION, THE TREATMENT OF THE MAIN PROBLEMS OF MONUMENTAL BUILDINGS, CONSIDERED IN THEIR OWN CONSTRUCTIVE, FUNCTIONAL AND MORPHOLOGICAL ASPECTS.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS
RECOGNITION OF THEORETICAL AND CULTURAL ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT THE RECOVERY AND PRESERVATION OF THE EXISTING BUILDING HERITAGE AND ABOUT THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS; UNDERSTANDING HISTORICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL FEATURES OF BUILDINGS AND ALL METHODS TO ANALYZE THE STATE OF CONSERVATION AND DESIGN EVERY INTERVENTIONS FOR A CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION PROJECT OF CONSTRUCTION ELEMENTS; ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND ANY DEFICIENCIES AND FUNCTIONAL VOCATIONS OF EXISTING BUILDINGS.
VALUATION AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS APPLIED
ABILITY TO ANALYZE EXISTING HERITAGE AND TO DEVELOP A CONSERVATION AND RECOVERY PROJECT, MAKING ALL APPROPRIATE MEASURES TO PRESERVE MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTIVE ELEMENTS AND TO REUSE BUILDINGS FROM CONSERVATION AND ENHANCEMENT POINT OF VIEW.
MAKING JUDGMENTS
ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THE EXISTING HERITAGE AND FOR THE RECOVERY AND CONSERVATION PROJECT.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
ABILITY TO WORK IN TEAM ON A RECOVERY AND CONSERVATION PROJECT OF A EXISTING BUILDING AND TO EXPOSE ORALLY ALL TOPICS DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE. ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE EVERY CONDUCTED ANALYSIS AND DESIGN SOLUTIONS THROUGH THE MOST APPROPRIATE GRAPHIC TOOLS.
LEARNING SKILLS
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN DIFFERENT CONTEXTS FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE AND TO DEEPEN THE TOPICS THROUGH THE STUDY, IN COMPLETE AUTONOMY, OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS THAN THOSE PROPOSED.
Prerequisites
FOR A SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF THE FIXED OBJECTIVES, BASIC KNOWLEDGE IS REQUIRED IN REFERENCE TO SURVEY AND GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION METHODS, TRADITIONAL AND ADVANCED BUILDING MATERIALS AND SYSTEMS, CONSIDERED IN RELATION TO THEIR HISTORICAL EVOLUTION AND STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR.
IT IS THEREFORE A PREREQUISITE THE EXAMINATION OF TECHNICAL ARCHITECTURE I.
Contents
- COURSE INTRODUCTION: CLARIFICATIONS ON TERMS (PREVENTION, MAINTENANCE, CONSERVATION, BUILDING RECOVERY, ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION);
- GENERAL PROBLEMS. BUILDING KNOWLEDGE: MASONRY BUILDINGS, CONCRETE FRAMED BUILDINGS DATING BACK TO THE FIRST DECADES OF THE 20TH CENTURY;
- BUILDING FINISHING ELEMENTS. AGEING AND DECAY: GENERAL CAUSES OF DECAY, MECHANISMS OF DECAY, DECAY OF MATERIALS, STRUCTURAL DECAY, DIAGNOSIS.
- DIAGNOSTIC: DECAY SURVEY AND ANALYSIS, DESTRUCTIVE AND NON-DESTRUCTIVE DIAGNOSTIC;
- REUSE AND FUNCTIONAL ADAPTATION, OBSOLESCENCE AND RECOVERY.
- PRESERVATION TECHNIQUES: PRESERVATION FOR BUILDING MATERIALS AND ELEMENTS, MOISTURE RECOVERY.
- THEORETICAL ORIENTATIONS: GUIDING PRINCIPLES ON BUILDING RECOVERY; METHODOLOGY AND PRACTICE.
- PROTECTION AND LEGISLATION: CHARTERS, RECCOMENDATIONS, CONVENTIONS AND INTERNATIONAL DECLARATIONS, NATIONAL AND REGIONAL LAWS.
- THE RECOVERY AND CONSERVATION PROJECT: THE CHOICE OF PROPER METHODS AND TECHNIQUES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE RECOVERY AND CONSERVATION PROJECT FOR AN EXISTING BUILDING. GUIDELINES FOR THE RECOVERY OF HISTORICAL BUILDINGS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE COVERS LECTURES, CLASSROOM PRACTICALS OR GUIDED VISITS. LECTURES LEAD TO THE ACQUISITION OF METHODOLOGICAL, CRITICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL TOOLS TO ADDRESS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROPER RECOVERY AND CONSERVATION PROJECT FOR TRADITIONAL OR MODERN EXISTING BUILDINGS. PRACTICALS INVOLVE THE ASSIGNMENT OF PROJECT THEMES THAT STUDENTS, DIVIDED INTO WORK TEAMS, ARE REQUIRED TO DEVELOP THROUGH THE ELABORATION OF TECHNICAL REPORTS AND GRAPHICS. THE THEME INCLUDES THE WHOLE COURSE CONTENT, AND IT CONSISTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A RECOVERY PROJECT PROVIDING FOR THE PRESERVATION OF BUILDING ELEMENTS THROUGH A PROPER INTERVENTION PLANNING. GUIDED VISITS ALLOW TO CRITICALLY EXAMINE EMBLEMATIC RECOVERY INTERVENTIONS.
Verification of learning
VERIFICATION OF THE LEARNING METHODS AND TECHNIQUES FOR THE PROJECT OF RECOVERY AND PRESERVATION OF EXISTING BUILDING HERITAGE THROUGH AN ORAL INTERVIEW IN WHICH THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ARE ASSESSED, ALSO BY VERIFYING THE RESULTS OBTAINED IN THE DESIGN FOR THE PROJECT OF RECOVERY GIVEN DURING THE DIDACTIC EXERCISES.
