Objectives
THIS COURSE WILL OUTLINE THE MAIN EVOLUTIVE PHASES OF LATIN WRITING FROM THE ARCHAIC ERA TO THE DIFFUSION OF PRINTED BOOKS. IN ADDITION, IT WILL OFFER A GLOBAL VIEW OF THE FIELDS OF APPLICATION OF WRITING (EPIGRAPHIES, BOOKS, DOCUMENTS) WITH PARTICULAR REGARD TO THEIR FORMAL AND TEXTUAL ASPECTS, METHODS OF PRODUCTION AND THEIR SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL LEARN:
- GENERAL FEATURES, AND AREAS OF PRODUCTION AND USE OF THE MAIN WRITTEN EVIDENCE OF THE WESTERN LATIN AREA.
- GENERAL FEATURES, BOTH STRUCTURAL AND FORMAL OF THE CODE AND (OF THE) MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT.
- METHODOLOGIES OF PALAEOGRAPHIC AND DIPLOMATIC RESEARCH.
STUDENTS WILL RECOGNISE PROBLEMS LINKED TO THE COMPOSITION AND FUNCTIONS OF THE MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTS.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE
STUDENTS WILL STRENGTHEN THEIR SKILLS TO:
- UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENT GRAPHICAL SYSTEMS AND THEIR RELATED APPLICATION AREA, WITH PARTICULAR REGARD TO FORMAL FEATURES OF BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS.
- IDENTIFY THE MAIN TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS AND THEIR CONTESTS, WITH PARTICULAR REGARD TO FORMAL FEATURES OF BOOKS AND DOCUMENTS.

INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO ANALYSE HANDWRITTEN TESTIMONIES INDEPENDENTLY AND TO EXPRESS THEIR EVALUATIONS ABOUT THE CONTEXTS OF PRODUCTION AND USE.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO REPRESENT AND COMMUNICATE CORRECTLY THE RESULTS OF THE READING AND INTERPRETATION ACTIVITIES OF THE TESTIMONIES EXAMINED USING THE CONCEPTUAL CATEGORIES OF THE DISCIPLINE.

- USE TRADITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS AND IT RESOURCES;
- UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE CONTINUOUSLY, USING TECHNICAL AND SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE.

THE COURSE IS DIVIDED IN TWO MODULES:
I) PRINCIPLES AND TERMINOLOGY OF PALAEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS. MATERIALS, INSTRUMENTS, TECHNIQUES. LATIN WRITING IN THE ARCHAIC AGE AND IN THE ROMAN AGE. BOOKS AND SCRIPTS FROM THE LATE ROMAN AGE TO THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES. THE SYSTEM OF ABBREVIATION IN ROMAN AND MEDIEVAL AGES. GRAPHIC PARTICULARISM. SCRIPTS AND CULTURE IN THE IXTH-XIVTH CENTURIES. MEDIAEVAL UNIVERSITY BOOKS. HUMANISTIC MANUSCRIPTS AND THE REVIVAL OF THE "ANTIQUA". SCRIPTS AND BOOKS IN THE MODERN AGE.

II) ELEMENTS OF DIPLOMATICS. GENERAL PRINCIPLES AND DEFINITIONS. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND. PUBLIC AND PRIVATE DOCUMENTS. PHYSICAL AND INTERNAL FEATURES OF THE MEDIEVAL DOCUMENT. DOCUMENTARY SCRIPTS: OLD ROMAN CURSIVE AND NEW ROMAN CURSIVE. BENEVENTAN DOCUMENTARY SCRIPTS. THE DIPLOMATIC MINUSCULE. THE XIIITH AND XIVTH CENTURIES: THE “CANCELLERESCA” MINUSCULE, THE MERCHANTS SCRIPT, THE SEMIGOTHIC CURSIVE.
Teaching Methods
EVERY LECTURE CONSISTS OF A THEORY PART - WITH PURPOSE TO THE HISTORICAL FRAME AND OF THE DESCRIPTION OF GRAPHIC PHENOMENONS - AND OF A PRATICAL PART DURING WHICH STUDENTS ARE PRESENTED DIGITAL AND FAC-SIMILE REPRODUCTIONS OF SCRIPTS WHICH ARE ILLUSTRATED ONE BY ONE. THROUGH GUIDED READING OF THE PLATES STUDENTS ACKNOLEDGE THE GRAPHIC PRODUCTION AND THE PUNCTUAL SINGLE OUT OF ITS CHARACTERS. THE PURPOSE OF THE LECTURES IS TO ALWAYS CREATE A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE STUDENTS WHO ARE INVITED TO ASK QUESTIONS AND TO REFLECT ABOUT EVOLUTIONARY PROCEEDINGS.
EXERCISES ABOUT THE MAIN REFERENCE WORKS OF MANUSCRIPTS ON TRADITIONAL AND DIGITAL SUPPORT USED; GUIDED VISITS TO LIBRARIES AND ARCHIVES WHERE PARTICIPANTS WILL VIEW ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPTS AND GAIN PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE IN APPLYING THEMES TO CONCRETE EXAMPLES.
Verification of learning
EVALUATION WILL BE EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS; IT WILL CONSIST OF AN ORAL EXAM WHICH CHECKS THE ABILITY OF THE STUDENT TO RECOGNISE GRAPHIC IDENTIFY, TO DATE AND PLACE TEXTS IN THE RIGHT HISTORICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXT, TO READ AND ANALYSE *FACSIMILAR EXAMPLES OF WRITTEN EVIDENCE.
THE STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES (EXPLAIN THEIR IDEAS) CLEARLY USING APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE AND THE RIGHT CONCEPTUAL CATEGORIES OF THE DISCIPLINE.

STUDENTS ATTENDING DEGREE COURSE IN CLASSICAL STUDIES WILL FOLLOW THE PROGRAM OF THE FIRST MODULE (30 HRS - 6 CFU).

DURING THE COURSE DIGITAL MANUSCRIPTS WILL BE CONSULTED AND ANALYZED. REPRODUTIONS OF THE MANUSCRIPT BOOKS AND DOCUMENTARY SCRIPTS WILL BE HANDED OUT.
GUIDED VISITS TO LIBRARIES AND ARCHIVES WILL TAKE PLACE.
I RECOMMEND ATTENDANCE.
WE RECOMMEND A KNOWLEDGE OF MEDIEVAL HISTORY.
