THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN HISTORICAL PROCESSES TAKING PLACE FROM THE 1800S TO THE PRESENT DAYS WITHIN THE SOCIO-POLITICAL SCOPE, WITH A MAJOR FOCUS ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS ON ONE HAND, AND THE LOCAL GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCES ON THE OTHER HAND. THE STUDENT WILL BE PRESENTED WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF GLOBALISATION, THE BIRTH OF THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS, AND THE VARIATIONS OF THE MODERN DEMOCRACY THROUGH A NUMBER OF EXAMPLES. THEY WILL LEARN THE GENERAL FEATURES OFF THE TRANSITIONS FROM ELITE MODELS TO THE MASS ONE, WITH A FOCUS ON COMMUNICATION MEDIA. THEY WILL UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE STRENGTHENING OF THE NATIONAL STATES AND THE WEAKENING OFF THE IMPERIAL SYSTEMS OF THE 19TH CENTURY, THE RISE OF TOTALITARIANISMS AND THE SUBSEQUENT ADOPTION OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION POLICIES IN THE 20TH CENTURY. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - RECOGNISE THE VARIOUS HISTORICAL PHASES WHICH HAD CHARACTERISED THE EVOLUTION OF DIVERSE PROCESSES; - GIVE CONTEXT TO THE VARIOUS EVENTS IN THEIR GENERAL OUTLINE; - DISTINGUISH THE GLOBAL DIMENSION FROM THE REFLECTION ON THE LOCAL SCALE. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DEVELOP THEIR CRITICAL THINKING WHICH WILL DERIVE FROM BEING AWARE THAT THE COMPLEXITY AND THE INTERTWINING OF HISTORICAL EXPERIENCES REQUIRE A PROBLEM ORIENTED APPROACH ANNE REFUSE OVER-SIMPLIFICATION AND SUPERFICIAL JUDGEMENT. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CARRY OUT ANALYSES AND DRAFT REPORTS ON THE MAIN SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CATEGORIES, ACCORDING TO THE HISTORICAL METHOD. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: CARRY OUT THE FIRST EXPERIENCES IN CONSULTING BIBLIOGRAPHY AND ARCHIVAL SOURCES; CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, OF BOTH SCIENTIFIC AND PUBLISHING TYPE; NAVIGATE THE FIELD OF HISTORICAL RESEARCH LINKING THE INVESTIGATIONS TO THE DOCUMENTS. |

THE COURSE IS COMPOSED OF 80 HOURS OF FRONTAL LESSONS, SOME OF WHICH (NOT MORE THAN 8 HOURS) WILL BE GIVEN AS SEMINAR SESSIONS ON SPECIFIC TOPICS. OTHER DIDACTIC SUPORTS WILL BE GIVEN DURING THE COURSE TO THE ATTENDING STUDENTS. |

THE EVALUATION WILL TAKE PLACE BY: 1) TWO WRITTEN INTERIM TESTS, ONE PER SEMESTER, CONSISTING OF 4 OPEN QUESTIONS REQUIRING BRIEF ANSWERS; 2) AN ORAL FINAL TEST, FINALIZED TO CHECK THE HISTORICAL METHOD AND THE CAPACITY TO INDIVIDUALIZE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EVENTS AND LONG-TERM PROCESSES. |
