THE COURSE WILL OPEN STUDENTS TO THE PROPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE STRUCTURE OF NATURAL LANGUAGE, ITS MAIN COMPONENTS (PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY AND SYNTAX, SEMANTICS, SOCIOLINGUISTICS) AND ITS BASIC STRUCTURED USES. WITH REGARD TO KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING, IT WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE CRITICAL TOOLS AND LANGUAGE FOR THE DEFINITION OF NATURAL LANGUAGE, FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF WORDS AND FOR THE ANALYSIS OF STATEMENTS. AS FOR THE ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING, STUDENTS WILL BE BROUGHT TO UNDERSTAND AND ANALYZE THE STRUCTURE OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF LINGUISTIC EXPRESSIONS. REGARDING THE INDEPENDENCE OF OPINION, STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN THE MEANS TO EVALUATE USEFUL CRITICAL EXPRESSIONS IN NATURAL LANGUAGE, IN TERMS OF CLARITY AND AMBIGUITY, AS WELL AS EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND FUNCTIONALITY. AS FAR AS COMMUNICATION SKILLS, STUDENTS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH THE METHODOLOGICAL CRITERIA USEFUL FOR THE CORRECT PRAGMATIC USE OF NATURAL LANGUAGE. AS FOR LEARNING SKILLS, STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN A SET OF UNIVERSAL MODELS OF EPISTEMOLOGICAL ANALYSIS, INCLUDING STRUCTURALISM, WHICH IS ALSO APPLICABLE IN THE STUDY OF OTHER DISCIPLINES, SUCH AS THE TEXT LINGUISTICS, FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES. |

THE COURSE WILL INITIATE STUDENTS TO UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF HUMAN LANGUAGE, AS WELL AS ITS MAIN FORMS (PHONETICS, PHONOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY) AND ITS FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURED USES (SYNTAX, SEMANTICS, SOCIOLINGUISTICS). TO THIS END, THE COURSE WILL BE DEVELOPED DEFINING IN DETAIL THE SPECIFIC AREAS OF GENERAL LINGUISTICS, BOTH THEORETICAL AND APPLIED, FOCUSING PARTICULARLY ON HOW TO PRODUCE SIMPLE (WORDS AND GROUPS OF WORDS) AND COMPLEX (PHRASES AND SPEECHES) UNITS OF MEANING. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE COURSE WILL EXPLORE THE ISSUES RELATED TO LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE AND PERFORMATIVITY, THE GRAMMATICALITY AND ACCEPTABILITY OF SIMPLE AND COMPLEX MEANING UNITS, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEXICON, SYNTAX AND SEMANTICS. |
