Objectives
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE A LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE AT LEVEL A2/B1 OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE AND TO ENCOURAGE THEIR CRITICAL THINKING. STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND USE BOTH EVERYDAY EXPRESSIONS AND ELEMENTS OF SPECIALIST TERMINOLOGY RELATED TO SOCIAL SCIENCES FLUENTLY. MOREOVER, THEY WILL ACQUIRE TOOLS FROM PRAGMATICS, SOCIOLINGUISTICS, AND DISCOURSE ANALYSIS FOR A CRITICAL APPROACH TO SPECIALIST LANGUAGES, TOPICS, AND TEXTS, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO MEDIA AND POLITICAL LANGUAGE. STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO COMPREHEND AND ANALYZE INFORMATIVE, SEMI-SPECIALIST, AND SPECIALIST TEXTS RELATED TO THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS. THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO GATHER, INTERPRET, AND PROCESS LINGUISTIC INFORMATION TO FORM AUTONOMOUS JUDGMENTS ON POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ISSUES. STUDENTS SHOULD ALSO BE CAPABLE OF COMMUNICATING INFORMATION, IDEAS, PROBLEMS, AND SOLUTIONS IN ENGLISH WITH LINGUISTIC PROPRIETY. THEY SHOULD IDENTIFY AND USE TRADITIONAL AND COMPUTERIZED SOURCES APPROPRIATELY AND INDEPENDENTLY EMBARK ON FURTHER STAGES OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDIES.

- LANGUAGE AS CULTURAL MEDIATION OF TEXTUAL AND EXTRA-TEXTUAL MEANINGS. COMPREHENSION OF SPECIALIZED TEXTS FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES (4H LESSON + 2H EXERCISES AND GROUP WORK)
- THE READING PROCESS AS A DYNAMIC INTERACTION BETWEEN READER, TEXT AND REFERENCE CULTURE (2H LESSON + 2H EXERCISES AND GROUP WORK)
- READING STRATEGIES AND TECHNIQUES. TEXTUAL CONVENTIONS, RHETORICAL STRUCTURE OF TEXTS AND TEXT TYPES (4H LESSON + 2H EXERCISES AND GROUP WORK)
- SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPS (12H)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED INTO LECTURES (20 HOURS), CLASSROOM EXERCISES AND GROUP WORK (10 HOURS), AND SPECIALIZED SEMINARS (12 HOURS). THE LECTURES WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE BASIC KNOWLEDGE AND THOSE RELATED TO MEDIA AND POLITICAL LANGUAGE. THE EXERCISES AND GROUP WORK WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO DEVELOP THE SKILLS TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE. THE SPECIALIZED SEMINARS WILL PROVIDE IN-DEPTH EXPLORATION OF SPECIFIC TOPICS RELATED TO THE COURSE OF STUDY.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL EXAM. THE WRITTEN TEST (LASTING 40 MINUTES) WILL BE CONDUCTED ON COMPUTER STATIONS AND WILL FOCUS ON THE LINGUISTIC ASPECTS OF THE COURSE THROUGH MULTIPLE-CHOICE EXERCISES, READING COMPREHENSION, TEXT COMPLETION, AND TRANSFORMATION. THE ORAL EXAM (LASTING 20 MINUTES) WILL BE ACCESSIBLE TO STUDENTS WHO ACHIEVE A MINIMUM SCORE OF 36/60 ON THE WRITTEN TEST AND WILL ASSESS THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO FLUENTLY ENGAGE IN CONVERSATION IN ENGLISH ON GENERAL TOPICS AND TO DISCUSS WITH LINGUISTIC PROFICIENCY THE SPECIFIC TOPICS OF THE PROGRAM AND AN IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS IN THE FORM OF A BRIEF ESSAY. THE FINAL GRADE IS EXPRESSED ON A SCALE OF THIRTY AND WILL RESULT FROM THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO ILLUSTRATE, DISCUSS, AND PERSONALIZE THE STUDY TOPICS.
