Objectives | |

THE COURSE AIMS TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO ACHIEVE A LINGUISTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE AT THE B2/C1 LEVEL OF THE COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE AND TO ENCOURAGE THEIR CRITICAL THINKING. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND USE SPECIALIZED LANGUAGE RELATED TO SOCIAL SCIENCES FLUENTLY. THEY WILL ALSO ACQUIRE THE TOOLS TO APPLY LINGUISTIC STRATEGIES TO THE PRAGMATIC AND SOCIOLINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF MODEL DISCOURSES AND SPECIALIZED TEXTS RELATED TO POLITICAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND POLITICAL SATIRE. ADDITIONALLY, STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO COMPREHEND AND CRITICALLY ANALYZE SPECIALIZED TEXTS RELATED TO ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS, TO FLUENTLY UNDERSTAND AND USE SPECIALIZED ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN SOCIAL SCIENCES, AND TO APPLY SPECIFIC METHODOLOGIES OF LINGUISTIC AND MULTIMODAL ANALYSIS TO VARIOUS TYPES OF AUTHENTIC TEXTS. STUDENTS WILL BE CAPABLE OF GATHERING, INTERPRETING, AND PROCESSING SPECIALIZED LINGUISTIC INFORMATION TO FORM AUTONOMOUS JUDGMENTS ON POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ISSUES. THEY WILL COMMUNICATE INFORMATION, IDEAS, PROBLEMS, AND SOLUTIONS IN ENGLISH WITH LINGUISTIC PROPRIETY, EVEN IN SPECIALIZED CONTEXTS. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY AND USE TRADITIONAL AND COMPUTERIZED SOURCES APPROPRIATELY AND EMBARK ON FURTHER STAGES OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDIES AUTONOMOUSLY. |

MODULE 1: THE PROGRAM WILL FOCUS ON CURRENT ISSUES AND IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS RELATED TO THE MASTER'S DEGREE, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO POLITICAL DISCOURSE, MEDIA DISCOURSE, AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS. IN PARTICULAR, RHETORICAL DISCOURSE, DIFFERENT PERSUASIVE STYLES, AND RELATED ARGUMENTATION, THE USE OF METAPHOR, IRONY, AND SATIRE AS POLITICAL TOOLS WILL BE ANALYZED. CASE STUDIES WILL BE ANALYZED FROM A DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE (20H LESSONS + 10H EXERCISES AND WORK GROUP). INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES WILL BE OFFERED (12H). MODULE 2: IN CONTINUATION WITH THE WORK CARRIED OUT DURING THE FIRST MODULE, THE PROGRAM INCLUDES BOTH DEEPENING AND RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ON THE SELECTED THEMES OF THE COURSE, AS WELL AS WRITING AND ORAL PRESENTATION ACTIVITIES FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (20H LESSONS + 10H EXERCISES AND WORK GROUP). INTERDISCIPLINARY SEMINARS AND LABORATORY ACTIVITIES WILL BE OFFERED (12H). |

THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED INTO LECTURES (20 HOURS PER MODULE), CLASSROOM EXERCISES AND GROUP WORK (10 HOURS PER MODULE), AND SPECIALIZED SEMINARS (12 HOURS PER MODULE). LECTURES WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE RELATED TO RHETORICAL, PERSUASIVE, AND ARGUMENTATIVE LANGUAGE. CLASSROOM EXERCISES AND GROUP WORK WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE. SPECIALIZED SEMINARS WILL PROVIDE IN-DEPTH EXPLORATION OF SPECIFIC TOPICS RELATED TO THE COURSE OF STUDY. |
Verification of learning | |

THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL TEST. THE WRITTEN TEST (LASTING ONE HOUR) WILL INVOLVE WRITING AN ESSAY OR MAKING A PRESENTATION RELATED TO ONE OF THE COURSE TOPICS. THE ORAL TEST (LASTING 20 MINUTES) WILL ASSESS THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO ARTICULATE AND DISCUSS THE CONTENTS OF THE ESSAY OR PRESENTATION WITH FLUENCY AND LINGUISTIC PROFICIENCY, AS WELL AS TO PERSONALIZE THEM. THE FINAL GRADE, EXPRESSED ON A SCALE OF THIRTY, WILL BE BASED ON THESE ABILITIES. BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND MODULE, THERE WILL BE A MID-COURSE TEST WITH THE SAME CHARACTERISTICS AS THE FINAL TEST, WHICH WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT FOR THE FINAL EVALUATION. |
