Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE COURSE AIMS TO GIVE KNOWLEDGE OF BIOCHEMICAL TERMINOLOGY AND OF MOLECULAR BASES OF BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, OF ENZYMATIC CATALYSIS, OF STRUCTURE-FUNCTION RELATIONSHIP OF PROTEINS AND ENZYMES, OF MAIN METABOLIC PATHWAYS AND THEIR INTEGRATION.
APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE COURSE ALSO AIMS TO MAKE STUDENTS ABLE TO CRITICALLY EVALUATE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, THUS THEY MAINLY USE IT TO UNDERSTANDING BIOCHEMICAL MECHANISMS.
Prerequisites
ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IS REQUIRED.
Contents
AMINO ACIDS AND PEPTIDES. PEPTIDIC BOND. PRIMARY, SECONDARY AND TERTIARY STRUCTURE OF PROTEINS. QUATERNARY STRUCTURE (9H LESSON): MYOGLOBIN AND HEMOGLOBIN (4H LESSON). ENZYMES. ENZYMATIC COFACTORS. Teaching Methods
THE TEACHING PROVIDES 64 HOURS OF TEACHING CONSISTING IN CLASSROOM LESSONS. CLASSROOM LESSONS WILL BE HELD WITH THE HELP OF PROJECTIONS. TO ATTEND THEORETICAL LESSONS IS NOT MANDATORY BUT STRONGLY SUGGESTED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF TEACHING AIMS WILL BE VERIFIED BY MEANS OF A WRITTEN EXAMINATION, WITH A DURATION OF 120 MINUTES. THE TEST CONSISTS OF A COMBINATION QUESTIONS WITH DIRECT OR OPEN ANSWERS. THE EXAMINATION IS ON THE WHOLE AIMED TO VERIFY THE ACQUISITION OF: KNOWDLEDGE AND EXPERTISES ON TOPICS OF THE BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY, ON STRUCTURE-FUNCTION RELATIONSHIPS OF MACROMOLECULES, ON METABOLIC PATHWAYS AND THEIR REGULATION; ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND PROPOSED PROBLEMS; ADEQUATE LANGUAGE SKILLS. MINIMUM SCORE (18/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH SUPERFICIAL KNOWLEDGE AND LIMITED COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS SUFFICIENT CLARITY SKILLS. MAXIMUM SCORE (30/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH DEEP KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS RIGOROUS CLARITY SKILLS AND GOOD DEDUCTIVE REASONING AND THINKING SKILLS SCORE OF 30/30 CUM LAUDE WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH EXCELLENT KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS EXCELLENT CLARITY SKILLS AND DEDUCTIVE REASONING AND THINKING SKILLS.
