Objectives
FOR THE STUDENTS IN MEDICINE AND SURGERY, THE MEDICAL STATISTICS AND INFORMATICS COURSE IS GIVEN IN THE SECOND SEMESTER OF THE YEAR AND IS ARTICULATED IN TWO EDUCATIONAL MODULES, RESPECTIVELY OF 4 AND 2 ECTS, FOR A TOTAL OF 72 HOURS OF LESSONS. THE COURSE HAS THE PURPOSE OF FAVORING THE ACQUISITION OF THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN TOPICS OF MEDICAL STATISTICS AND INFORMATIC OF INTEREST IN THE DEGREE COURSE. IN PARTICULAR, THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL TOOLS USED IN MEDICAL STATISTICS TOGETHER WITH A STRENGTHENING OF THE BASES OF APPLIED INFORMATICS, IN A STRONG CONNECTION WITH THE WORKING HYPOTHESES ON WHICH THE CURRENT USE OF THESE INSTRUMENTS IS FOUNDED AND JUSTIFIED, AND INCLUDING, IN A CRITICAL WAY, THE LIMITS OF VALIDITY AND APPLICABILITY IN REAL CONTEXTS (KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING).
THE PERFORMANCE OF THE TEACHING ACTIVITY WILL ALLOW THE STUDENT TO APPLY CORRECTLY THE INSTRUMENTS OF THE MEDICAL STATISTICS AND INFORMATICS ON THE QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE DESCRIPTION OF REAL CASES AND, ESPECIALLY, IN THE INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS OF INTEREST IN THE COURSE OF STUDIES.
THE STUDENT WILL BE, THEREFORE, ABLE TO:
1) ASSESS THE QUALITY OF THE EXPECTED RESULTS, IN RELATION TO THE INTRINSIC APPROXIMATIONS OF THE MODELS AND THEOREMS ADOPTED AND IN RELATION TO MEASUREMENT ERRORS (CAPACITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING).
2) INTEGRATE NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE AND MANAGE THE COMPLEXITY OF INFORMATION IN THE APPLICATION OF THE ACQUIRED INSTRUMENTS, AND FORMULATE JUDGMENTS AND (ADDITIONAL) WORKING HYPOTHES, ALSO ON THE BASIS OF LIMITED OR INCOMPLETE KNOWLEDGE, AND ON THE EFFECTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES LINKED TO THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE (AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT).
3) DISCUSS THE TOPICS OF MEDICAL STATISTICS AND INFORMATICS TREATED IN THE COURSE WITH APPROPRIATENESS AND SIMPLICITY OF LANGUAGE, GATHERING A CLEAR AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION OF CONTENTS AND RESULTS IN INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTEXTS, AND ALSO IN PRESENCE OF INTERLOCUTORS NOT EXPERIENCED IN THE FIELD (COMMUNICATION ABILITY).
4) EXPAND AND DEEPEN THE TOPICS OF MEDICAL STATISTICS AND INFORMATICS AS WELL AS ITS INTERDISCIPLINARY APPLICATIONS IN AUTONOMOUS MODE THROUGH THE USE OF APPROPRIATE AND UP TO DATE TOOLS (TRANSVERSAL SKILLS).
FOR THE STUDENTS IN DENTISTRY THE OBJECTIVES WILL FURTHER ADHERE THE PUBLISHED DIDACTIC GUIDELINES.

THE DIDACTIC ACTIVITY OF THE COURSE OF MEDICAL STATISTICS AND INFORMATICS IS STRUCTURED AS TWO INTEGRATED MODULES (MODULE 1: MEDICAL STATISTICS, MODULE 2: INFORMATICS). LECTURES WILL COVER THE FOLLOWING ARGUMENTS:

LECTURES AND NUMERICAL AND GRAPHICAL EXERCISES WITH THE COMPUTER.
Verification of learning
SELF-ASSESSMENT TESTS WILL BE CARRIED OUT DURING THE COURSE.
FINAL EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST, FOLLOWED BY AN ORAL TEST. THE WRITTEN TEST IS AIMED TO THE SYNTHETIC ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE AND OF APPLICATION CAPACITIES WITH REFERENCE TO THE TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE, AND TO THE INSTRUMENTS USED DURING THE COURSE. THE ORAL TEST CONSISTS IN A DETAILED INTERVIEW AIMED TO THE EVALUATION OF THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEDGE AND CAPACITY WITH REFERENCE TO ONE OR TWO TOPICS COVERED IN THE COURSE AND TO THE EVALUATION OF HIS/HER COMMUNICATION SKILLS. THE ASSIGNMENT OF A GRADE IN THIRTIETHS TO THE WRITTEN TEST AND, SUBSEQUENTLY, TO THE ORAL TEST, IS PROVIDED. THE EXAMINATION IS PASSED WHEN THE VOTE OF EACH TEST IS GREATER THAN, OR EQUAL, TO 18 AND THE FINAL GRADE CORRESPONDS TO THE GRADE OF THE ORAL TEST.
