Objectives
COURSE OBJECTIVES: PROVIDING ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LITERARY THEMES, THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF THE LITERARY TEXTS; PROVIDING ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE LITERARY TEXT IN ITS LINGUISTIC AND FORMAL ASPECTS.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF ITALIAN LITERARY HISTORY BY READING THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE WORKS AND OF THE PRINCIPAL STUDY METHODS AND INSTRUMENTS (BIBLIOGRAPHIES, CATALOGUES, TABLE OF CONTENTS, DATA BANKS, ETC.); CAPACITY TO COMPREHEND AND ANALYSE THE LITERARY TEXTS – BOTH IN PROSE AND IN VERSES – OF DIFFERENT TIMES OF ITALIAN LITERARY HISTORY.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
ABILITY TO GRASP THE VARIOUS FACTORS (HISTORICAL, SOCIAL, CULTURAL, RHETORICAL ONES, ETC,) AFFECTING AUTHORS’ TRAINING AND LITERARY PRODUCTION; ABILITY TO EVALUATE THE THEMATIC, HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL, IDEOLOGICAL, LINGUISTIC ASPECTS IN THE ANALYSIS OF A LITERARY TEXT; ABILITY TO ARRANGE AN ELEMENTARY BIBLIOGRAPHY RESEARCH ON A SPECIFIC HISTORICAL AND LITERARY SUBJECT.
Prerequisites
HISTORICAL AND LITERARY KNOWLEDGE ALREADY ACQUIRED IN THE HIGH SCHOOL LEARNING YEARS. BASIC ABILITIES OF ANALYSING AND SYNTHESIZING LITERARY TEXT.

THE COURSE AIMS AT ILLUSTRATING SOME OUTSTANDING ASPECTS OF THE 13TH – 19TH CENTURY ITALIAN LITERARY HISTORY, BY PRESENTING SOME OF THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE AUTHORS (DANTE, PETRARCA, BOCCACCIO, ARIOSTO, MACHIAVELLI, METASTASIO, GOLDONI, PARINI, ALFIERI, FOSCOLO, MANZONI, LEOPARDI, VERGA) AND WORKS.
BEFORE THE TEXTS PRESENT IN THE LITERARY HISTORY MANUAL THE STUDENTS REFER TO THE EXAMINATION ON THE FOLLOWING TEXTS: D. ALIGHIERI, “COMMEDIA” INF. VI; PURG. VI; PAR. VI; F. PETRARCA, CANZONIERE 1, 16, 265; G. BOCCACCIO, “DECAMERON”, PROEMIO AND II 5, IV 1; N. MACHIAVELLI, PRINCIPE XVIII, XXV; U. FOSCOLO, “LE ULTIME LETTERE DI JACOPO ORTIS” (THREE LETTERS); G. VERGA, “MASTRO DON GESUALDO”.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS MADE UP OF FORTY-FIVE LECTURES, SOME OF WHICH BASED UPON WRITING DRILL-LESSONS, IN ORDER TO BETTER THE STUDENT’S WRITING SKILLS, BY ANALYSING AND PARAPHRASING (THROUGH SYNTHESIS AND REWRITING TOO) LITERARY TEXTS COVERING THE WORKS AND THE AUTHORS STUDIED.
Verification of learning
THE ORAL EXAMINATION MAY BE PRECEDED BY A WRITTEN ONE. THE QUESTIONS WILL ONLY CONCERN THE TOPICS COVERED BY FRONTAL LESSONS, EXERCISES AND SEMINARS CARRIED OUT DURING THE COURSE. THE TEACHER WILL HAVE TO FOLLOW THE PROGRAMME AND THE EXAMINATION ARRANGEMENTS EXPLAINED IN DETAIL IN THIS SCHEDULE.
