Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF PHYSICAL PHENOMENA RELATED TO RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES, ESPECIALLY SOLAR ENERGY, WIND ENERGY, BIOMASS AND ENERGY FROM THE SEA.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
ABILITY TO PERFORM PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY OF RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANTS, BOTH IN COMPARISON WITH THE TRADITIONAL SOURCES AND IN A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS BETWEEN DIFFERENT ENERGY SOURCES AND RELATED PLANT TYPOLOGIES.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
ABILITY TO EVALUATE POTENTIAL AND LIMITS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANTS, ALSO IN RELATION TO THE REGULATORY FRAMEWORK.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
ABILITY TO WORK AS PART OF A TEAM, ESPECIALLY TO PERFORM CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS OF ENERGY PLANTS, ALSO BY USING THE COMPUTER.

LEARNING SKILLS
KNOWING HOW TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED THROUGH THE COURSE TO CASE STUDIES.
Prerequisites
SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF TARGETED SKILLS REQUIRES COMPETENCES IN THE FIELD OF PHYSICS, THERMODYNAMICS, FLUID MACHINERY AND ENERGY SYSTEMS. FOR THE PRACTICAL PART, IT IS USEFUL TO BE FAMILIAR WITH COMPUTER PROGRAMMING, PARTICULARLY WITH THE MATLAB PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE, AND THE USE OF SPREADSHEETS.
Contents
•RENEWABLE AND NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF ENERGY SOURCES.
•THE KYOTO PROTOCOL AND INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS, ALSO WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION. NATIONAL REGULATIONS. THE ENERGY PLAN. INCENTIVE POLICIES.
•SOLAR RADIATION. THERMAL PANELS AND THEIR TYPES. SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEMS. CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER. PHOTOVOLTAIC EFFECT. PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS. TRANSPORT APPLICATIONS.
•GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE WINDS. THE BETZ THEORY. TYPES OF WIND TURBINES. CURVES OF POWER AND PERFORMANCE. WEIBULL DISTRIBUTION. CONTROL METHODS. WIND FARM. INSTALLATION ASPECTS.
•BIOMASS AND THEIR USE FOR ENERGY PURPOSES. COGENERATION PLANTS.
•OVERVIEW ON ENERGY OBTAINABLE FROM THE OCEAN WAVES, TIDES, CURRENTS AND MARINE THERMAL GRADIENTS.
•OVERVIEW ON HYBRID RENEWABLE ENERGY PLANTS AND ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS.
•OVERVIEW ON GEOTHERMAL ENERGY AND ITS APPLICATIONS FOR STATIONARY POWER GENERATION AND BUILDING COOLING/HEATING.
•OVERVIEW ON THE USE OF FUEL CELLS FOR STATIONARY POWER GENERATION AND AUTOMOTIVE PROPULSION.
•TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS, THROUGH THE USE OF SPREADSHEETS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF COMPUTATIONAL TOOLS IN MATLAB ENVIRONMENT.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES AND EXERCISES IN THE CLASSROOM, EVEN WITH THE USE OF COMPUTERS, AS WELL AS VISITS TO THE LABORATORY, AND EVENTUAL FURTHER TECHNICAL VISITS.
Verification of learning
THE SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF COURSE OBJECTIVES WILL BE ASSESSED THROUGH A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL INTERVIEW. TO PASS THE EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE FULL UNDERSTANDING AND ABILITY TO APPLY THE MAIN CONCEPTS PRESENTED IN THE COURSE. THE VOTE, OUT OF THIRTY WITH EVENTUAL HONORS, DEPENDS ON THE MATURITY GAINED ON THE COURSE CONTENT, ALSO TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE QUALITY OF WRITTEN AND ORAL EXPOSURE AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO MAKE JUDGMENTS.
