THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE TO DESCRIBE THE MAIN ENVIRONMENTAL PROCESSES RELATED TO THE WATER RESOURCE, ITS QUANTIFICATION AND ITS INTERACTION WITH POSSIBLE CONTAMINANTS AND WITH THE SOIL AND SUBSOIL SECTOR, THROUGH THE MEASUREMENT OF NATURAL PHENOMENA IN THE FIELD AND LABORATORY ANALYSIS AS WELL AS THE APPLICATION OF APPROPRIATE PHYSICAL-MATHEMATICAL MODELS, CALCULATION METHODS AND THE USE OF APPROPRIATE COMPUTER TOOLS. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF HYDRAULICS AND THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF HYDRAULIC INFRASTRUCTURE, SANITARY-ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND LAND MECHANICS IS REQUIRED. |
Contents | |

INTRODUCTION TO THE LABORATORY (9 HOURS) DEFINITION OF THE MAIN VARIABLES FOR THE QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE CHARACTERISATION OF THE RIVER WATER RESOURCE AND FOR THE STUDY OF THE INTERACTION WITH THE SURROUNDING SOILS: (I) MEASUREMENT OF FLOW RATES, SPEED AND GEOMETRY OF THE BED IN NATURAL WATERCOURSES, (II) PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERISATION OF WATER INCLUDING MEASUREMENT OF CONVENTIONAL CONTAMINANTS, (III) PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL CHARACTERISATION OF SOILS AND SEDIMENTS IN RIVERBEDS AND FLOODPLAINS. FIELD VISIT (6 ORE) CAMPAIGN OF HYDRAULIC, GEOTECHNICAL AND CONTAMINANT MEASUREMENTS AT A SIGNIFICANT SITE DURING A FIELD VISIT TO A WATERCOURSE. SAMPLING OF WATER AND SOIL FOR LABORATORY ANALYSIS. LABORATORY ACTIVITIES (9 HOURS) ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES COLLECTED IN THE FIELD FOR THE PHYSICAL-MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SOILS, AND PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERISATION OF WATER IN THE LABORATORIES OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH ENGINEERING (SEED) AND GEOTECHNICS. MEASUREMENT OF HYDRAULIC MEASUREMENTS ON LABORATORY CHANNELS AND ON SMALL-SCALE PHYSICAL MODELS AT THE ENVIRONMENTAL AND MARINE HYDRAULIC LABORATORY (LIDAM). HYDRAULIC ENGINEERING (22 HOURS INCLUDING 7 HOURS OF THEORY AND 15 HOURS OF CLASSROOM PRACTICE) REFERENCES TO HYDROLOGICAL MODELS DESCRIBING THE FORMATION OF SURFACE RUNOFF IN WATERCOURSES AND FLOODS. HYDRAULIC MODELS FOR THE STUDY OF FREE-HAIRED CURRENTS IN RIVER BEDS: SAINT-VENANT EQUATIONS AND SIMPLIFIED HYPOTHESES OF THE KINEMATIC WAVE MODEL. NUMERICAL RESOLUTION OF THE DE SAINT-VENANT EQUATIONS WITH MONO- AND BI-DIMENSIONAL SCHEMES. WITH REFERENCE TO A REAL CASE STUDY, EXERCISE FOR ESTIMATING WATER VELOCITIES AND HEIGHTS OF CURRENT. ENVIRONMENTAL SANITARY ENGINEERING (22 HOURS INCLUDING 7 HOURS OF THEORY AND 15 HOURS OF CLASSROOM PRACTICE) REFERENCES TO SURFACE WATER QUALITY PARAMETERS SIMULATION MODELS OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY IN WATERCOURSES ASSESSMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY STATUS OF WATERCOURSES GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING (22 HOURS INCLUDING 7 HOURS OF THEORY AND 15 HOURS OF CLASSROOM PRACTICE) CALLS ON FILTRATION MOTIONS IN SATURATED SOILS. INFILTRATION PATTERNS FOR PARTIALLY SATURATED SOILS. MODELS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF TRANSPORT OF POLLUTANTS UNDERGROUND. NUMERICAL RESOLUTION OF THE EQUATIONS FOR THE FILTRATION MOTIONS IN SOILS, WITH REFERENCE TO A CASE STUDY. |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSE INCLUDES THEORETICAL LECTURES (30 HOURS), CLASSROOM EXERCISES (45 HOURS) AND PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES (15 HOURS). PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE THE OBSERVATION AND MEASUREMENT OF SOME NATURAL PHENOMENA RELATED TO THE WATER RESOURCE, ITS QUANTIFICATION AND ITS INTERACTION WITH POSSIBLE CONTAMINANTS AND WITH THE SOIL AND SUBSOIL SECTOR, BOTH IN THE FIELD AND IN THE LABORATORY. CLASSROOM EXERCISES WILL INCLUDE THE APPLICATION OF PHYSICAL-MATHEMATICAL MODELS AND METHODS OF CALCULATION THROUGH THE USE OF SOFTWARE AND PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES, WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO A REAL CASE STUDY SUBJECT OF A FINAL REPORT. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES SET WILL BE MADE BY AN ORAL INTERVIEW AT THE END OF THE LABORATORY. THE ORAL INTERVIEW (LASTING APPROXIMATELY 30 MINUTES) NORMALLY INVOLVES A DISCUSSION ON THE CONTENTS OF THE FINAL REPORT PRODUCED WITH REFERENCE TO PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES AND EXERCISES AND QUESTIONS ON THE THEORETICAL-THEORETICAL ASPECTSAPPLICATIONS ADDRESSED IN THEORETICAL LESSONS. THE PURPOSE OF THE INTERVIEW IS TO VERIFY, ON THE BASIS OF THE RELEVANCE AND COMPLETENESS OF THE ANSWERS GIVEN, THE LEVEL OF DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE, THE ABILITY TO LINK TOPICS, THE QUALITIES OF CLARITY AND CRITICAL SYNTHESIS POSSESSED BY THE STUDENT. FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE AWARD, FULL SATISFACTION OF ALL THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS SHALL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT. |
