Objectives
THE COURSE IS AIMED AT ENHANCING STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE OF ITALIAN LITERATURE IN A DIACHRONIC PERSPECTIVE, AS WELL AS THEIR INTERPRETATIVE AND LINGUISTIC SKILLS THROUGH THE STUDY OF SIGNIFICANT AUTHORS AND THE THOROUGH ANALYSIS OF EXEMPLARY TEXTS FROM A CRITICAL AND HISTORICAL POINT OF VIEW.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE
-IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN ASPECTS AND MOMENTS OF THE ITALIAN LITERARY TRADITION THROUGH THE READING AND ANALYSIS OF THE WORKS OF ITS MOST REPRESENTATIVE AUTHORS;
-IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN METHODS AND TOOLS FOR THE STUDY OF ITALIAN LITERATURE;
-ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND LITERARY TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT PERIODS, ALSO FROM A MULTICULTURAL AND COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE, IDENTIFYING FEATURES OF CONTINUITY AND INNOVATION WITH RESPECT TO THE REFERENCE TRADITION;
-ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND CONTRIBUTIONS OF LITERARY CRITICISM, FOCUSING ON CRITICAL AND INTERPRETATIVE ISSUES.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO
-GRASP THE DIFFERENT FACTORS (HISTORICAL, SOCIAL, CULTURAL, ETC.) THAT INFLUENCE THE AUTHORS’ BACKGROUND AND THEIR LITERARY PRODUCTION;
-UNDERSTAND AND ANALYSE, THROUGH THE THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS ACQUIRED, THE LITERARY TEXTS CORRECTLY, IDENTIFYING THEIR THEMATIC AND FORMAL ASPECTS AND APPROPRIATELY PLACING THEM IN THEIR HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT;
-RELATE THE ITALIAN CULTURAL AND LITERARY CONTEXT WITH THE INTERNATIONAL ONE, THROUGH SIGNIFICANT WORKS;
-CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES ON HISTORICAL AND LITERARY SUBJECTS.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO
-MAKE PERSONAL, AUTONOMOUS AND CRITICALLY JUSTIFIED ASSESSMENTS ABOUT THE VARIOUS TYPES OF TEXTS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT AND ADEQUATELY ARGUE THEIR OPINIONS;
-RELATE SPECIFIC LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY PHENOMENA TO THE CULTURAL CONTEXT;
-USE, PROCESS AND SUMMARISE DATA WITH COMPLETE INTELLECTUAL AUTONOMY AND INDEPENDENCE OF JUDGEMENT.

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO
-PRESENT INFORMATION, CONCEPTS, PROBLEMS, INTERPRETATIONS, OPINIONS AND RESEARCH RESULTS IN A CORRECT, COHERENT AND ARTICULATED WAY;
-SUSTAIN A CRITICAL DISCUSSION AND PRESENT IDEAS AND COMPLEX REASONING CONCISELY AND CLEARLY;
-EFFECTIVELY AND CRITICALLY COMMUNICATE LITERARY CONTENTS MAKING APPROPRIATE USE OF THE SCIENTIFIC LEXICON OF THE DISCIPLINE;
-APPLY THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS ACQUIRED, ALSO THROUGH THE USE OF COMPUTER AND MULTIMEDIA TOOLS.

LEARNING SKILLS

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO
-CONSTANTLY DEEPEN AND UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS THROUGH ADEQUATE SCIENTIFIC METHODOLOGY AND ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS, INCLUDING COMPUTERIZED AND DIGITAL TOOLS;
-CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, ALSO THROUGH THE USE OF COMPUTER RESOURCES, IN ORDER TO EXPAND AND ENHANCE THEIR CULTURAL EDUCATION.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY OF ITALIAN LITERATURE, ITS WORKS AND ITS MOST SIGNIFICANT AUTHORS ACQUIRED DURING THE THREE-YEAR DEGREE COURSE.

Contents
A PATH THROUGH ITALIAN NARRATIVE IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY:
- HISTORICAL-LITERARY FRAMEWORK, IDEOLOGICAL, LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC PARADIGMS (6 HOURS);
- READING, ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY OF REPRESENTATIVE TEXTS BY THE FOLLOWING AUTHORS, MASTERS OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY MODERNITY, WHO WILL BE STUDIED: SVEVO, PIRANDELLO, TOZZI (24 HOURS).
WITHIN THE TEXTS AND DOCUMENTS THAT WILL BE EXAMINED, PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE FOLLOWING NOVELS: PIRANDELLO, "IL FU MATTIA PASCAL"; TOZZI, "CON GLI OCCHI CHIUSI"; SVEVO, "LA COSCIENZA DI ZENO".
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE WILL CONSIST OF THIRTY HOURS OF LECTURES AND WILL BE HELD IN THE SECOND SEMESTER.
LECTURES WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY MOMENTS IN WHICH STUDENTS WILL BE STIMULATED TO REFLECT, MAKE OBSERVATIONS AND FORMULATE QUESTIONS ON THE TOPICS UNDER EXAMINATION.
THE FOCAL POINT OF THE TEACHING WILL BE THE ANALYSIS AND AN ADEQUATE HISTORICAL-LITERARY FRAMEWORK OF EXEMPLARY TEXTS BY THE AUTHORS WHO WILL BE STUDIED. MULTIMEDIA TOOLS WILL ALSO BE USED.

Verification of learning
FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION.
THE FINAL EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF AN INTERVIEW AIMED AT ASCERTAINING THE CANDIDATE'S DEGREE OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE MAIN CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL-LITERARY DYNAMICS OF THE REFERENCE CONTEXT, AS WELL AS OF THE TOPICS, AUTHORS AND TEXTS INDICATED IN THE PROGRAMME.
BESIDES THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTENTS, THE EVALUATION WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS: A) RELEVANCY OF THE ANSWERS; B) ABILITY TO DEVELOP THE REASONING IN AN AUTONOMOUS MANNER, WITH AN ADEQUATE AND WELL ARTICULATED ARGUMENTATION; C) CORRECT USE AND VARIETY OF LANGUAGE; D) MASTERY OF THE BASIC TOOLS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY TEXTS.

REGULAR ATTENDANCE IS RECOMMENDED.
STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT EXCEEDED 20% ABSENCES WILL BE CONSIDERED AS ATTENDING.
