Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH AN IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF ITALIAN LITERARY HISTORY, AS WELL AS OF ITS FOUNDING ELEMENTS, THROUGH THE STUDY OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT AUTHORS AND THE AWARE ANALYSIS OF EXEMPLARY TEXTS FROM A CRITICAL AND HISTORICAL POINT OF VIEW.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

-IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN ASPECTS AND MOMENTS OF THE ITALIAN LITERARY TRADITION THROUGH THE READING AND ANALYSIS OF THE WORKS OF ITS MOST REPRESENTATIVE AUTHORS, AS WELL AS OF THE MAIN METHODS AND TOOLS FOR ITS STUDY;
-KNOWLEDGE OF DEFINING ASPECTS OF THE LITERARY LANGUAGE;
-ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND LITERARY TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT PERIODS, ALSO IN A MULTICULTURAL AND COMPARATIVE DIMENSION, IDENTIFYING FEATURES OF CONTINUITY AND INNOVATION WITH RESPECT TO THE REFERENCE TRADITION.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

-ABILITY TO GRASP THE DIFFERENT FACTORS (HISTORICAL, SOCIAL, CULTURAL, ETC.) THAT INFLUENCE THE AUTHORS’ BACKGROUND AND THEIR LITERARY PRODUCTION;
-ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND ANALYSE, THROUGH THE ACQUIRED THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL TOOLS, THE LITERARY TEXTS CORRECTLY IDENTIFYING THEIR THEMATIC AND FORMAL ASPECTS AND APPROPRIATELY PLACING THEM IN THEIR HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT;
-ABILITY TO CRITICALLY PLACE THE LITERARY TEXTS WITHIN THE NATIONAL AND EUROPEAN LITERARY TRADITION.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO
-MAKE PERSONAL AND AUTONOMOUS ASSESSMENTS, BUT CRITICALLY JUSTIFIED, ABOUT THE VARIOUS TYPES OF TEXT TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT AND ADEQUATELY ARGUE THE OPINIONS EXPRESSED;
-INTERPRET SPECIFIC LINGUISTIC AND LITERARY PHENOMENA IN RELATION TO THE REFERENCE CULTURAL CONTEXTS;
-CRITICALLY ANALYSE DIFFERENT SOURCES.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO
-COMMUNICATE IN A CORRECT, COHERENT AND ARTICULATED WAY INFORMATION, CONCEPTS, PROBLEMS, INTERPRETATIONS, OPINIONS AND RESEARCH RESULTS;
-SUSTAIN A CRITICAL DISCUSSION AND EXPLAIN IDEAS AND OPINIONS CONCISELY AND CLEARLY;
-EFFECTIVELY AND CRITICALLY COMMUNICATE LITERARY CONTENTS MAKING APPROPRIATE USE OF THE SCIENTIFIC LEXICON OF THE TOPIC;
-APPLY THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS ACQUIRED, ALSO THROUGH THE USE OF COMPUTER AND MULTIMEDIA TOOLS.

LEARNING SKILLS

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO
-USE THE ANALYSIS TOOLS AND APPLY THE ACQUIRED LEARNING METHODS TO CONSTANTLY AND AUTONOMOUSLY DEEPEN AND UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS;
-CARRY OUT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, ALSO THROUGH THE USE OF COMPUTER RESOURCES, TO EXPAND AND ENHANCE THEIR CULTURAL EDUCATION.

HISTORICAL AND LITERARY KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN HIGH SCHOOL.

Contents
PATHS IN THE ITALIAN LITERATURE OF THE EIGHTEENTH AND NINETEENTH CENTURIES IN THE CONTEXT OF EUROPEAN CULTURE:
-HISTORICAL AND LITERARY CONTEXTS; IDEOLOGICAL, POETIC, LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC PARADIGMS (8 HOURS);
-POETRY AND PROSE TEXTS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE FOLLOWING AUTHORS WHO WILL BE STUDIED: GOLDONI, PARINI, ALFIERI, FOSCOLO, MANZONI, LEOPARDI, VERGA (40 HOURS);
-ELEMENTS OF LITERARY CRITICISM, PHILOLOGY, METRICS, RHETORIC AND NARRATOLOGY (6 HOURS).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE WILL CONSIST OF FIFTY-FOUR HOURS OF LECTURES AND WILL BE HELD IN THE SECOND SEMESTER.
LECTURES WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY MOMENTS IN WHICH STUDENTS WILL BE STIMULATED TO REFLECT, MAKE OBSERVATIONS AND FORMULATE QUESTIONS ON THE TOPICS UNDER EXAMINATION.
THE FOCAL POINT OF THE TEACHING WILL BE THE ANALYSIS AND AN ADEQUATE HISTORICAL-LITERARY FRAMEWORK OF EXEMPLARY TEXTS BY THE AUTHORS WHO WILL BE STUDIED. MULTIMEDIA TOOLS WILL ALSO BE USED.

Verification of learning
FINAL ORAL EXAMINATION.
THE FINAL EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF AN INTERVIEW AIMED AT ASCERTAINING THE CANDIDATE'S DEGREE OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE MAIN CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL-LITERARY DYNAMICS OF THE REFERENCE CONTEXT, AS WELL AS OF THE TOPICS AND TEXTS INDICATED IN THE PROGRAMME.
BESIDES THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTENTS, THE EVALUATION WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS: A) RELEVANCY OF THE ANSWERS; B) ABILITY TO DEVELOP THE REASONING IN AN AUTONOMOUS MANNER, WITH AN ADEQUATE AND WELL ARTICULATED ARGUMENTATION; C) CORRECT USE AND VARIETY OF LANGUAGE; D) MASTERY OF THE BASIC TOOLS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY TEXTS.

IT IS ADVISABLE TO USE ACCREDITED EDITIONS OF THE TEXTS AND, IN CASE OF CONSULTATION OF DIGITAL RESOURCES, TO VERIFY RELIABILITY OF THE SOURCE.
REGULAR ATTENDANCE IS RECOMMENDED.
STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT EXCEEDED 20% ABSENCES WILL BE CONSIDERED AS ATTENDING.
NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS ARE INVITED TO AGREE ON THE PROGRAMME WITH THE LECTURER.
