Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO INTRODUCE THE STUDENT TO THE METHODOLOGIES OF SOCIAL RESEARCH, EXPOSING THEIR THEORETICAL BASIS, ACQUISITION TECHNIQUES AND
DATA PROCESSING, AS WELL AS USE IN SPECIFIC CONTEXTS.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS: KNOWING THE CLASSICAL AND CONTEMPORARY THEORIES OF SOCIAL RESEARCH AND LEARNING ITS LANGUAGE,
TECHNIQUES AND GOALS.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: BEING ABLE TO USE THE TECHNIQUES LEARNED FOR THE ANALYSIS OF SPECIFIC IMPORTANT CASES
Prerequisites
NO PREREQUISITE REQUIRED
Contents
THE COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING THE BASIC TOOLS FOR THE CORRECT SETTING OF EMPIRICAL RESEARCH WORK, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE RESEARCH DESIGN AND THE CHOICE OF DATA COLLECTION TOOLS.

A FIRST PART WILL CONSIDER THE BASIC QUESTIONS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH, FOCUSING IN PARTICULAR ON THE THEORETICAL CRITERIA AND THEORETICAL PARADIGMS OF THE TWO MAIN RESEARCH APPROACHES: QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE. THE NEXT PART WILL CONSIDER THE MAIN TECHNIQUES FOR DETECTING AND ANALYZING DATA, ACCORDING TO DIFFERENT RESEARCH TYPES.

TOPICS COVERED

- FUNDAMENTAL PARADIGMS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH: POSITIVISM, NEO-POSITIVISM, POST-POSITIVISM
- HISTORY OF ITALIAN SOCIAL RESEARCH METHODS
- FUNDAMENTAL PARADIGMS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH: INTERPRETIVISM
- COMPARISON OF QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE APPROACHES
- RESEARCH DESIGN
- TYPICAL STRUCTURE OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCHES
- UNIT OF ANALYSISI
- THEORIES, HYPOTHESES, MODELS, LAWS, REGULARITIES, INDICATORS, INDICES AND VARIABLES
- THE CONCEPTS OPERATIVIZATION PROCESS
- SURVEY DETECTION: THE QUESTIONNAIRE
- STATISTICAL SOURCES AND SECONDARY DATA ANALYSIS
- THE QUALITATIVE APPROACH: THE PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION
- INTERVIEWS: BIOGRAPHIES, SEMI-DIRECTIVES, IN-DEPTH
- USE OF DOCUMENTS
- FOCUS GROUP TECHNIQUE
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE ENTAILS 36 HOURS OF TEACHING (6CFU) BETWEEN FRONTAL LESSONS AND PRACTICAL EXERCISES RELATED TO THE DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF EMPIRICAL SURVEYS. STARTING FROM THE RESEARCH DESIGN ELABORATED, PART OF THE TUTORIALS WILL BE DEDICATED TO ADDRESSING SPECIFIC ISSUES RELATED TO THE CONSTRUCTION AND USE OF SOME QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE RESEARCH TOOLS
Verification of learning
THE EXAM INCLUDES AN ORAL TEST ON THE COURSE CONTENTS. THE FINAL EVALUATION WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT NOT ONLY THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEGE OF THE SUBJECT BUT ALSO HER ABILITY TO CRITICALLY APPLY THE METHODS STUDIED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A RESEARCH PATH. TESTS ON SPECIFIC PARTS OF THE PROGRAM MAY ALSO BE SCHEDULED DURING THE COURSE FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS ONLY.
