THE COURSE PROVIDES AN INTRODUCTION TO THE NOISE THEORY, TOGETHER WITH AN INTRODUCTION TO THE MEASUREMENT METHODOLOGIES. MOREOVER, SEVERAL EXAMPLES ON DIFFERENT PHYSICAL SYSTEMS ARE REPORTED DESCRIBING THE RESULTS OBTAINED WITH THE STUDY OF ELECTRIC FLUCTUATIONS TO EVIDENCE THE MICROSCOPIC MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE OF THE CONDUCTION PROPERTIES. IN PARTICULAR, MANGANITES, TWO-DIMENSIONAL ELECTRON GAS FORMED AT OXIDE INTERFACES, PHOTOVOLTAIC DEVICES, SUPERCONDUCTORS, LOW-DIMENSIONAL MATERIALS, CARBON NANOTUBE COMPOSITES, AND INNOVATIVE MATERIALS FOR QUANTUM TECHNOLOGIES HAVE BEEN INVESTIGATED IN TERMS OF CHARGE CARRIER FLUCTUATION PROCESSES AND THE RESULTS OF THIS ANALYSIS ARE SHOWN IN A SERIES OF LESSONS. THE STUDY OF THESE FLUCTUATION PROPERTIES ALLOWS THE INTERPRETATION OF VERY COMPLEX ELECTRICAL TRANSPORT PHENOMENA, GIVING INTERESTING INFORMATION BOTH FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE BASIC RESEARCH AND OF THE PHYSICS OF APPLICATIONS. IN THIS RESPECT, THE IDENTIFICATION OF POSSIBLE STRATEGIES TO REDUCE THE INTRINSIC NOISE RESPONSE IS A MANDATORY REQUEST FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE AND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGICAL DEVICES. THE SUCCESS OF SUCH GOAL TAKES ALSO ADVANTAGE FROM THE FACT THAT THE NOISE SPECTROSCOPY IS A VERY SENSITIVE AND NON-DESTRUCTIVE EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE, HAVING A LARGE-SCALE APPLICABILITY. THE COURSE AIMS TO PROMOTE STUDENTS' INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT SO THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE THE CONCEPTS AND THEORIES STUDIED. FURTHERMORE, THE COURSE AIMS TO IMPROVE STUDENTS' COMMUNICATION SKILLS SO THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO EXPRESS THEIR IDEAS AND ARGUMENTS CLEARLY, USING APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE. FINALLY, IT IS AIMED TO PROMOTE STUDENTS' INDEPENDENT LEARNING ABILITY SO THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO DEVELOP EFFECTIVE STUDY STRATEGIES. |

THE COURSE ASSUMES THE KNOWLEDGE OF BASIC TRIGONOMETRY, ANALYTICAL GEOMETRY, COMPLEX NUMBERS, AND CALCULUS FOR MULTI-VARIABLE FUNCTIONS. A BACKGROUND IN ELECTROMAGNETISM AND WAVE OPTICS, LEARNED IN THE UNIVERSITY COURSES, IS HIGHLY HELPFUL. |

LECTURES (10 H). THE LECTURES COVER THE DIFFERENT TOPICS OF THE COURSE BY INTRODUCING PROBLEMS OF INCREASING NOVELTY AND COMPLEXITY. THE LECTURES INCLUDE EXAMPLES AND EXERCISES TO CONSOLIDATE THE STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING. THE STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO LEARN THE TECHNIQUES USEFUL TO WRITE AN ARTICLE-STYLE MANUSCRIPT, FOLLOWING THE TEMPLATE AND GUIDELINES OF A TYPICAL INTERNATIONAL PHYSICS JOURNAL. |

THE ASSESSMENT CONSIDERS HOW EFFECTIVE ARE THE METHODS, HOW COMPLETE AND SOUND ARE THE REPLIES AND HOW CLEAR IS THE PRESENTATION. |
