Studies and research

He is the author of about 60 publications, focused on the Etruscan and Italic phases of Campania. The main research interest is the Etruscan site of Pontecagnano, where he works both in the town and in the necropolis. As for the inhabited area, he participated in the archaeological investigations, which were preliminary to the A3-SA / RC motorway extension work. Then he edited the excavation, tracing the history of the settlement, from prehistory to late antiquity.

Since 2015, the study of the Etruscan and Samnite phases of the town has been continuing with the excavations conducted in the Archaeological area. The research on the necropolises develops both the topographic aspect and the rituality and funerary representation, in order to reconstruct the dynamics of the formation of the community between the early Iron Age and the Samnite phase (9th-3rd century BC). This project is closely linked to the complete edition of the necropolises, in collaboration with the Museum Pole and the Superintendency and it will be developed through Degree Theses, Research Doctorates and Post-doctoral Research Grants.

The basic tool was the elaboration of a G.I.S. of the necropolises that, through specific applications, implemented the possibilities of analysis and visualization of information, relating to the spatial organization of burial grounds and tomb contexts (grave structure, anthropological data, funerary ritual and grave goods). A further field of study is the Etruscan epigraphy. The responsible of the unit holds a specific teaching position at the University of Salerno, the only University in Italy, together with that of Bologna, to promote a course in Etruscan epigraphy.

The research activity includes the publication of unpublished inscriptions and the reinterpretation of documents already known from Pontecagnano and Fratte. Furthermore, the project aims at the study of the extraordinary complex of archaic inscriptions from the sanctuary of Fondo Iozzino in Pompeii. This study will be completed by a unified interpretation that aims to reconstruct the historical development of Etruscan writing in the region, enhancing the paleographic and onomastic data of the huge number of inscriptions from other Campanian sites.
